Hard drive Problem

I need help from someone I bought an external case for my old IDE hard drive and all of a sudden, I can't access it.

I went into administration tools and opened up computer management to check the drive. Apparently I can see it, but it has no drive letter. I try to assign a drive letter, but it won't let me. It doesn't show that the hard drive has a file system. I plugged it back into the old computer, but it is doing the same thing.

What causes the file system on a hard drive to go missing? Any way to fix this without having to reformat everything on the hard drive?

For starters, USB suck kangaroo balls.

On top of that, some of the cheap enclosures have "iffy" firmware that can cause problems when the computer and the enclosure are trying to communicate.

FTR, I have NEVER had this problem with an enclosure that was connected via FireWire. Ever.
