Hard Drive help

Okay, i finally got my fucking enclosures, dvds, and dvd burner....

So my question is I am setting up my 120GB hard drive in the enclosure and I am trying to figure out what standard to use. There are three settings that are used, single, master (dual), and slave (dual). I know I am not going to use the master setting since I already have a drive set up..... My immediate reaction was to set the drive up as a slave, but this single setting is confucing me.... any help or light you guys can shed on the subject is helpful..... thanks....

MasterTL, holla at me, I got a question about DVDXCopy.... thanks...

If its in a USB Enclosure then technically it cant conflict when set as Master. Master and Slave are only relevant when you have 2 internal drives on the same cable. And now a days most Drives and Cables are "Cable Select" so you can slap it on there without worrying.

But all in all I would think the enclosure would come with some instructions on what to use.

that is correct. dealing with enclosures, you normally set the drive as master or it won't get recognized.

I set it up as slave, and the enclusure sucks because it came with no instructions.... damn, POS... but hopefully it works....

Yo, do I use the software that I got with the enclosure or the hard drive??? I am assuming that since the hatrd drive is in a USB enclosure, my existing computer will recognize it as one big as removable drive, correct??? So I don't need the software for the hard drive.... Also, the dvd burner came with no software, so i am guessing the enclosure will auto recognize??? man, I am so noob at this shit......

if you're running XP you should be OK with the the OS recognizing it. let me know if it sees it as a slave

So, I do not need to use the software that came with the hard drive??? Is it now just plug and play or do i need to install the enclosure software???

All you have to do is set the jumpers to slave then plug and play. After you install it, go to my computer and you will see that you now have a D or E drive depending on how many other drives you have. You don't really need your software unless it's a 250 gig drive because sometimes the computer will not recognize the size.

Just try it, you won't fry anything.

No can do, bro.... I am using the enclosure becaue this would be easy for me to use as i don't have to carry my desk top with me everywhere..... also, the snclosure allows me to be mobile with the hard drive....

naw, it is a desktop, it is just that i thought since it is going in an enclosure, that the drive should be plug and play, but it was not.... the drive is not recognized, so I just set up the different drivers..

I finally got this shit to work, it is tight....

Stop whoring my thread or I will ask Hyde to deal with you personally....
_______________

I got everything to work. I set the drive as Master (single - no other periphs hooked up to cable) and also used the drivers that came with the harddrive, I did not partition the drive, did not see a need to (unless anybody can tell me otherwise). The drive works and I have already started burning shit to it.....

Thanks everyone that helped, I owe ya'll...... (except for Jatt, he was being a bitch)
sad, i am desi and I know very little about computers......

Guys,

Do you get issues with hard drive in enclosure and with USB?
Mine works fine for sometime and then suddenly it becomes unavailable. Then if i power off & on, it shows up again. so it does not work consistently.

Any ideas??

avinash, that is what i did, I have had no problems yet, are you leaving the hard drive on all the time or are you stopping the drive and then turning off the unit (the enclosure)???

I just turn off the unit (enclosure) and not stopping the drive.

I do not leave the drive on all the time but only put it on when i need it.
I don't want to keep it on always.

Should i be stopping the drive and then power off the enclosure?

that happened to me but with a firewire drive and windows. a couple of things you can blame

1) the enclosure
2) the usb port
3) the usb cable
4) windows itself

to narrow it down what you can do for:
#1 - try another enclosure
#2 - plug it in another usb port
#3 - try another cable
#4 - try it on another machine

i guess also check to see if windows is up to date, not including service pack 2 if you're using XP

doubt it's the hard drive coz if it was, you'd get a different error

See I don't turn off the enclosure when i want to shut it down.... I do the following:
1. Stop the unit, since the computer is reading my hard drive in the enclosure as a USB 2.0 Mass Storage device.... so i stop the mass storage device.
2. I disconnec the USB cable from the computer.
3. turn off the enclosure.....

That's the right order (2 and 3 are interchangeable).

I'm impressed - Many people don't know that they should stop the unit in Windows before they disconnect it.
