Google Chromecast

Google's $35 Airplay competitor.

I really don't have interest in this but I find it amusing that someone has already turned it into a Gameboy emulator.

I ordered one the first day and got it on Friday. It works great as a Netflix extender for my upstairs TV which doesn't have it built in. I haven't tried it yet with the Chrome browser or anything else.

It was a steal with the 3 months of netflix IMO, and for it to become a steal again devs just need to support it. If chrome on Android supports it that would be simply amazing.

They said on the first day that it came with 3 months of Netflix and then retracted that later that night. I bought it early in the day and have yet to get the Netflix code...

I ordered it. It's useful for me to blast my Note 10.1 screen to my TV.

I got it today in the mail and also got the email for the Netflix code. I gotta say this thing while so simple is pretty cool. In my opinion it's the easiest option of watching youtube and I presume the same for Netflix. This is comparing it to TV, Xbox 360 methods. Never used roku or apple TV. I like how the tv/receiver switches inputs on its own. I have it connected to receiver.

Also chrome tabs works pretty well. I'll test watching a movie on it from a site. I tried playing a local .mkv file. While video seemed perfect there was no audio. Bummer

Dell is coming out with one too called Project Ophelia. Its going to do more since they bought out Wise and it actually looks like a glorified remote desktop to Dell's cloud to a true PC. Could be interesting....

Hmm, it does. It will definitely be more powerful, at least what it seems like. Maybe too powerful for the everyday consumer though?? Plus my mom would never let us keep a keyboard and mouse downstairs, unless it can be controlled by an app?

Its like evernote to me. It seems like an amazing app that can do a whole lot, but its just I just want something simpler.

One of the good things about chromecast is the range of devices. I'm android for phone and tablet. Apple for laptop. My dad is android for phone, apple for tablet Windows for comp.

This is a CM or another xda dev I forgot, but he's making this app to put any pic or video taken on the phone to chromecast. The catch is google needs to approve it, per terms of the SDK? So if google allows it then we can see this app coming

It would be neat if you could cast a Google Hangout or Skype on to your TV.

Well you probably can with chrome but I'm guessing it would be laggy and then you're still using the webcam on your laptop

So this chromecast thingy is interesting, very fast and responsive, good quality when streaming. It is pretty limited for now but I like it.

I finally got my netflix promo code, worked fine and gave me a credit for $24.97. Netflix and Youtube work great, I believe it's supposed to be able to use whatever you have on the Chrome brower, I put Chrome on my phone and it didn't work, I'll play around with it more with my laptop this weekend.

Yea it works great with the supported streams

The chrome browser mirroring only works with the laptop as of now. It will be awesome if they bring it to mobile though!!

Been living with it for a couple of weeks now. Really simple to operate, no need for a separate remote that'll get lost, and exactly what I need to watch content.

I love my Apple TV as well, but its just had more functions than I need. I really only need to cast youtube vids, netflix every once in awhile, and throw some music from Pandora or whatever on there from my Windows laptop.

Gonna give my Apple TV to my father-in-law, who'll find it convenient to use with all his Apple products.

The ideas and apps are insane for this thing. Right now I just plug my laptop into my TV directly via a long HDMI cable. What are the advantages of the Chromecast over the laptop?

With Chromecast you basically don't need the cord But for now laptop streams everything so that's better. Again, we are talking about a $35 device that streams Netlflix and such very fast with a seamless integration.

Also, Chromecast is still being developed and new cool stuff are coming soon which will cut that cord.... Of course we can't expect 1080p streaming, not yet.

AirPlay is better for now... but we shall see, again it's only $35 bux. It brought netflix and streaming functionality to my bedroom TV which does not have built in apps.

Is there an adapter for Chromecast to composite cables on old TV's? I can certainly use this for my daughters' room.

^ you'd need an HDMI converter...but I don't know if that will work well.

More things to do on Chromecast for now http://readwrite.com/2013/07/30/chro...ofhvVdHvk1lqeG

airplay is better if your household is made up of apple products. My house, we have one macbook pro, ipad 2. All android phones, and two PC's so for us chromecast is better.

^^yup. Mine is a mix of 3 systems: Apple stuff, Android stuff, and Windows stuff (that I use Chrome on).

ChromeCast lets me use all 3 to stream things.

I was able to use an app to AirPlay things from my Android device, but it was never perfect.

Yeah I'd probably just go Roku then since they still support composite.

Well, this sucks.

Can't play my locally stored mkv files. Won't even play some .avi files. Only files it would play are .mp4 ones

Every time I try to open a non .mp4 file, chrome just tries to save it again.

Damn.

Well, found a workaround. Upload the files to Google Drive and play them from there via tab casting. Eats a boat load of bandwidth to upload though :/

Yup... Search for gopro 3d, there's some really cool stuff. There are other 3d things out there, but the 3d base jumping, motocross, extreme sports vids are insane.

Did you get your $6 Google Play credit towards a movie?

I thought the $6 credit was only if you bought it directly from Google? In any case, no I did not get one. Oh well, I've gotten my fair share of Google Play Credits already. Lol. Plus its probably the cheapest the Chromecast will be for a while since it looks like Google is about to go full on with the device now that they're releasing it beyond just the Play Store now and they've been pumping Chromecast commercials nonstop. The SDK should be dropping early December as well if the rumors are true so that means more apps will be able to access the device.

Nope, you get it from anywhere you buy the Chromecast from this weekend. Same deal as with the Netflix thing when it launched.

For everyone else, Amazon is selling it for $30.

That's normal. If you go to:

https://play.google.com/movies

You should see a list of all your purchased movies and TV episodes. I think Google recently updated the store to auto-play the movie once you hit "Add to Library". I'm guessing they got a lot of complaints from people who couldn't find their movies/shows after purchasing or something.

Oh I also hear BestBuy is price matching the $25 Amazon Prime Chromecast deal if you're a student as well...
