Just get the cheapest you can find (I have a few CompUSA ones). They all work about the same.

I Love this one.

I have 4 of them (without the light)

They dissapate the heat perfectly, completely silent as there is no fan and they have both USB and Firewire.

Although my next one may be an external Sata case.

I agree with Whiskers, but I bought this one for sale...and it goes with my entire setup (asthetically).. I have the black one, my computer case is also black....and also has the same blue light in front.

I bought this one because it was the only thing Compusa had when my La Cie enclosure shit the bed.

The changing lights are :ghey: and annoying. but the enclosure works just fine. no problems in 2 years.

I have a simpletech 250GB Ex hard drive, but its nearly full so i need a bigger hard drive. The thing I liked about it is that the warranty that comes with it is 3years.

I have another enclosure which I like much better. but i remember the name.

Even with those two (120gb, 250gb)..i need another one.

I'm thinking of saying fuck it, and going with La Cie agian and getting a 500gb.

With I could afford the 1.2 tb one

IMO, yes they do....Not that I've been doing this for years though.....I built my first one a few months ago, the case that houses the drive is never hot and works great. I just keep it plugged in via USB and access it when I need too. Love the portability of it too!

how big is the hard drive you are gonna put in to it? what are you gonna be using it for?

i have an 80GB drive that is 1/2 full of mp3s at work. i wanted to get an external case and throw it in there so i could bring it back and forth from home to work. all of the good (metal) cases are like $30 or more.

the hot thing right now is external drives. best buy, circuit city, etc are selling them.

matter of fact i just checked best buy and circuit city, and circuit city has a 120GB WD for $70 after rebates. i might pick that up today. its only a 2MB buffer but im just using it for mp3s. this way i can have my mp3s at work and home and i have backups if either fails.

so i guess i am saying if your drive is 100GB or < you can get a drive + enclosure for a little bit more

^^ That Netgear is coming out with an 802.11g model. It will most likely drive down the price of the 10/100 Ethernet one listed above. IMO I rather have the 10/100 one then the wireless one anyways.

I'm totally wireless....so i'd be interested in that one. I wonder how fast the drives are accessed over the network and if there is any bad lag.

I would love to keep everything off my main laptop drive and have constant access...i get lazy about hooking up my externals because it means i have to anchor my powerbook.

I went with the adaptec model. They make them for 3.5" and 2.5" drives and work great.

I just looked in Sundays paper and Staples has a Maxtor 200GB External Hard Drive for $120.. Which is probably cheaper then what you could build one for.. I've built several and it's hard to find a good enclosure and a cheap hard drive..

Although I know some people don't like Maxtor..

Rotation Speed 7200 RPM
Compatibility PC
Cache Buffer Size 8MB
Burst Transfer Rate 480 Mb/sec
Average Seek Time 9.3ms
Warranty 1-year mfr. limited warranty

I have always been using Pocketec drives. They are very compact, and in most cases, they are powered through USB and do not require external power. I have had my 30 GB drive for 3 years, and my 100 GB drive for about a 1 year now, and they never gave me any problems. They are a little pricey though...
