Exploitation of unprotected Windows shares

The CERT/CC continues to receive reports that indicate a dramatic resurgence in the use of intruder tools which scan for and compromise Windows systems with unprotected network file shares. These reports also indicate that DoS agents are being installed on the compromised systems. This activity is similar to that described in IN-2000-02.

Information about protecting against these kind of attacks can be found in the Home Network Security Tech Tip.

Nice thing about the XP with the security packs installed is that you cannot setup an account with a blank password or create a wide open share.
