Excel Question
Here is a question for any Microsoft excel geniuses.
Let's say you have a list of different dollar values that add to a grand total.
Then let's say you have another list with only 4 values that add to that same grand total. Is there any type of formula to determine which values out of the entire list will add up to one of the subtotal values? I am hoping I don't have to go through the entire list trying to guess which values add up to one of the other values.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

I teach Excel and I can't think of any function that will do that for you automatically. It could be done with a macro, but it's going to take a lot of work. Is this a one time thing you're trying to fix, or will it be something you'll use regularly?

There could be many combinations of numbers that add up to each of those numbers. Therefore even if you could identify all these combinations, I dont think it would be useful information.
Or maybe I'm misunderstanding the problem.

I agree with FDL, i don't think it can be done, unless the values on the second sheet are the result of some formula visible in the fx line. if you have the formula you can back track to the original values.

You could write a macro that searches through the sheet and finds the values that add up to each of the four values you have on the second sheet, but the chances are good that there are multiple solutions to the problem. The more numbers you have, the more likely you'll have multiple possibilities.
Chances are, if you're dealing with numbers in the $3M range, you probably shouldn't guess at which ones add up to your totals.
