Dropping Internet Connection using Vista Home Premium?
I have an ongoing internet connection problem. Computer will be fine, then it drops the connection. When trying t repair it,I get the following message, There may be a problem with your DNS configuration. Windows failed to find the well known host www.microsoft.com using DNS.
The server may be down
It only happens with my desktop that I am running Vindows Vista Home Premium on.I also have a laptop running XP,that is fine, connection never drops. Desktop is wired to a D-Link DGL-4300 router. Anyone have any clues on what I can do to fix this? Most of the time,I just wait a very long time, and the connection is ok until it drops again. Thanks for the help.

I've had the same problem recently with my DNS servers. It's affecting all computers on my network vista, os x, iPhone, windows 7. It seems to be intermittent and only last a few minutes. There's nothing wrong with vista it something with the DNS servers which you have no control over. My DNS servers a 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 which are very popular DNS servers.
Can you test the laptop at the exact moment your desktop drops the connection to make sure its not the service? i know you've said the laptop never does drop but worth a shot to verify.

And I keep getting stupid popups too. I think there is some kind of virus on my CPU, but everytime I scan, nothing (and I have AVG)

Ok, I got everything figure out. Had to Disable TCP Auto-Tuning in Vista.
1. Open elevated command prompt with administrator’s privileges.
2. Type the following command and press Enter:
netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=disabled
If you ever need to turn this back on, here is how you do it.
Enable TCP Auto-Tuning
1. Open elevated command prompt with administrator’s privileges.
2. Type the following command and press Enter:
netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=normal
Connection has been great!

^ hah i was about to suggest that. had to do the same on my PC when i first went to vista. Still had to do it in 7 too.
although i'm using netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=restricted, rather than netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=disabled
