it isn't perfect, as obviously there are battery issues with the 4G... but the extended battery is supposed to fix it... if you live in an area with constant 4G coverage, it is amazingly fast... so for me in NJ//NYC i rarely drop down to 3G...

the reason i got it: 4G, bigger real estate (the screen is huge compared to iphone) and the hotspot feature is cool... anyone been able to use PDAnet on it yet???

i finally ordered the extended battery and sleeve to fit the monster battery... it has shipped so it should help my batt life now...

I haven't seen one with video that works with the second OTA update...yet. When I do find one, I'll post it here.

Some alternatives: Tango (now has desktop client) and Fring (ios and android)

Can you try this build of Skype?

http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...&postcount=739

Its a modified version with some Advanced settings which can force the camera to turn on, change the rotation, scale of the image Skype outputs, and a few other settings. Its the only version that seems to work on my Galaxy S and that device isn't supported by Skype. Force the camera on in the Advanced settings if it doesn't detect it.

CGFebTSX04 07-22-2011 11:34 AM

You could also try Yahoo Messenger as well. Video quality isn't great but at least they're multiplatform (iOS, Android, PC). Try this version of Yahoo Messenger as well and follow the instructions. You have to be rooted to do it right, however:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1087769

Instructions simplified:
1. Get root
2. Uninstall the original Yahoo Messenger and Yahoo Video Chat Plugin
3. Download YMFrontCamADB.zip from the post
4. Extract YMFrontCamADB.zip to a folder on your computer
5. You'll see a file called "com.htc.hardware.twinCamDevice.jar" in there. Transfer that to your phone's SD Card.
6. Use Root Explorer or any File Explorer to transfer com.htc.hardware.twinCamDevice.jar to the "/system/framework/" folder of your phone. Remember to click on Mount R/W on the top right if it isn't already set to be read/write.
7. Long press and hold on com.htc.hardware.twinCamDevice.jar and click on Permissions. Change permissions to rw-r--r-- (Owner: read, write; Group: read; Others: read)
8. Install "yahoo.im.apk" onto your phone
9. Install any of the "yahoo.imvideo.***.apk" versions to see which one matches your camera's rotation

This works perfectly for my Galaxy S, again officially unsupported by Yahoo. Video is not the greatest but it works on wifi, 3g, whatever internet connection you have.

Verizon and HTC still have us on 2.2 unfortunately (not rooted here yet), so stock users wont be able to take advantage of that skype link.

Whoops. Thought they were on Gingerbread already. In that case, try this alternative:

The guy is always updating so just post a comment in there about the Thunderbolt and give him logs. It'll help speed things up.

got my new extended battery and case... this thing is now perfect... i actually don't mind the bulkiness a bit... it actually helps to grip the phone better when using it... before it was so slim that sometimes i could feel it slipping from my hand...

this battery should have come standard with the phone!!! now i need to just replace my screen protector and it is like a brande new phone!!!

Monoprice has a good price on screen protectors for the T-Bolt right now. I haven't used these before, but at the price they are at I took a risk and bought three a couple of hours ago.

I have the extended 2750 mah HTC battery and I LOVE IT.

This is the best phone i've had now, everything is perfect with the bigger battery and latest update. NO Complaints.

I can use my phone for almost a day and a half and up to 3 days (Depending how much I am using it) before my next charge.

sho_nuff1997 07-26-2011 08:28 PM

The extended battery helps the battery life a lot, but the phone is WAY too big and heavy with it in. Especially if you put a case around it. We tried these phones for a bit at work, but they are just not practical. IMO, phone should fit in your pocket comfortably and you shouldn't have to buy accessories to make the battery last a day. But props to vzw for getting out an update so quickly and fixing the biggest battery drain.

How is the 4G coverage for you guys? Debating on whether the jump would be worth it for me.... the only time I use data is to reroute directions and surf the web. Speaking of which, how is the GPS feature on the Tbolt? It seemed to work really well, with turn-by-turn directions on my brother's Incredible.

4G is fast, when the phone stays on. With my battery lasting on average, 4 hours with 4G enabled, I now run in 3G only. Battery lasts till I plug it in around 11 when I hit the sack. It typically still has a quarter battery left. With 4G, it would be in the truck charging by noon.

Is that with the extended battery pack? I'll have to see how big the phone is with the extended life battery pack. Either way, it sounds pretty bad.

Seems like the battery drain issue is related to the phone constantly searching for 4G coverage? Theoretically, if 4G coverage were as widespread as 3G, would the battery life improve at all?

Searching for 4G is part of the issue. Even if the phone is not searching, just being connected to 4G will drain the battery fast. 3G drains battery too....Just not as fast as 4G. If I have my phone on 2G only, it will last almost 2 days.

That said, if your phone is searching for any network, your battery will drain faster.

The GPS can be a bit finicky at times. It isnt as solid as the incredible (friend has one), it can take a while to lock (2-8 minutes for me), but once it locks it works just fine.

As far as 4G coverage, Verizon plans to cover every location it has 3G with 4G by 2013.

I would suggest to wait and see what the Droid Bionic (4G) has to offer when it comes out (rumored early Sept).

Urgh.... you guys are helping, but at the same time, you're not

My contract ended late last month and the itch is incredible. I've only had iPhones since late 2007... can you blame me?

I was even considering just getting a regular phone and adopting the upcoming PSP successor with 3G as my portable media device, since it has wifi, GPS, music, etc. I just want something future proof, and 4G sounds really tempting. Some people say it's as fast/faster than their home internet.

The 4G is pretty awesome. I average 12-18Mbps download in most areas with 4G, with a record of solid 38Mbps download at a near by casino.

FYI there is a rumor that the next iPod touch will be 3G, so that may be an option as well.

CGFebTSX04 07-27-2011 08:39 PM

Supposedly, the Galaxy S II (Fascinate II?) variant for Verizon will be 4G LTE capable.

Verizon’s support account is on a roll today. First we had confirmation (that has sort of been retracted) that the Galaxy S II will be a 4G LTE device and may now have the name for it as well. How does Fascinate II, sound? Rumors of it being called the Function have been floating around for a couple of months thanks to some random accessory site, but Fascinate II just makes so much more sense. The DROID brand all follows some sort of numerical naming convention, so why not the Galaxy S line?
And I’m pointing this out for the simple fact that the initial question was, “When is the Galaxy SII coming out?” with no mention of Fascinate. The VZW support rep is the one that included the name.

Thoughts?

Cheers Dave!
