Did you guys setup a Google Voice account today?
just curious, are you guys trying to pick a number from your area code, or near by area at least?
btw, I can't pick a number for the life of me, I feel like a re TARD [/hangover]

The point is that you can mix up numbers, words, letters, etc to try and come up with your own combination (if it's available, which, 99% of the time it won't be). Regardless, you can try to get something close to what it is that you're looking for. I still haven't chosen a damn number, hah.

Your balance shows how much credit you have to make international calls from Google Voice. Calls made within the continental U.S. are free and don't affect your balance.
Fuckkkkkkk this shit.
Not only does it record each voicemail, but also transcripts of it? Transcripts of all calls maybe?
That would easily fit into their advertising algorithm.. could pull key words out of the call transcripts and target the advertisements based on that (similar to how gmail does this).

So what up fellas? Is it even worth setting up if I can't use my local area code?!?! F-ck just because I live on an island in the middle of the pacific doesn't mean Google has to hate
Iono, setting up a 415 or 310 number seems teh ghey

My only question is if Google Voice is able to hand off the call when I answer (it passed CID data, at minimum)? Otherwise, there goes the ability to use the free "in-network" (or the whole "favorite x") calling that cell carriers offer!
If you are military personnel, using your .mil address to sign up, you are now pushed to the front of the wait list per Google.

After an initial scare of vm being searchable, google replies with an answer:

Holy crap. It seems that Google is going to have some pretty serious explaining to do this morning, as one of our readers has sent us in a tip that reveals a major security flaw involving Google Voice. After entering “site:https://www.google.com/voice/fm/* ” into Google, our reader was shocked and discouraged to be greeted by 31 voice mail messages belonging to random Google Voice accounts. Clicking on each revealed not only the audio file and transcript of the call, but it also listed the callers name and phone number as it would if you were checking your own Google Voice voice mail. We’re not too sure if this flaw is something new or if it has been around since Google Voice started, and could just be test messages, but needless to say the matter has to be fixed if it’s legit. Some censored screenshots are after the jump.
Thanks, Brian!
UPDATE: It seems as if these voicemails have been publicly posted/shared online and Google indexes them. Here’s official word:
“Since the initial idea behind posting a voicemail, was precisely to share it with others, we did not restrict crawling of those messages that users post on the web, but we can certainly understand that users would want to make them public on their sites but not necessarily searchable directly outside of their own website. We made a change to prevent those to be crawled so only the site owner can decide to index them.”

Just signed up now, but am only using it with my cell number for voicemail at the moment. It does what it says it does, not sure if I want an actual google number yet, the international calling fees are pretty similar to vonage so might be worth it for when I call my Sister in Jerusalem and a friend in London. Plus no need for an Int'l calling plan with the google number on the cell.
^I'm going this route and dropping my Comcast VOIP. Double check the rates and also check Skype as their rates beat each other depending on the country.
I didn't see the point of a google voicemail though since I have an iPhone and want to use the visual voicemail.

As I only have one phone I dont see that I need this. And getting a new number while everyone has my current number, I'm not gonna tell them I got a new number. So I dont see the point for me. Although maybe later in the future when I work, or have my own home phone then I see it being useful.
Wait so you can use your own cell phone number and have it just add the voicemail? I would like to do that since I dont have visual voicemail at the moment.

Yea, I don't really see it as being terribly useful but I have one. It is handy to be able to call ppl from your computer but I feel skype owns the market now, especially with video calls on the iPhone.
Actually, I think I'll use the number for my new job and forward it to my cell. Is there a way to tell which number ppl have called from my iPhone?
