I assume you mean true front projection? Or are you talking about CRT projection? Either way DLPs own all of them now IMO.

Yes, the triple chip DLPs rock - fixed colors, no wheel - no rainbow problem. The large projectors we use are all triple DLPs.

Front has it's advantages but the main disadvantage is the cost for comparable brightness, not to mention you need a screen and long cables etc. For a theater room sure, but not great room IMO

I wasn't suggesting he do that - I was just trying to figure out what you were referring to by "true rear projection".

Gotcha. I think the benifits of DLPs, etc far outweigh any now very small differences in picture quality tho.

Please forgive the hijack but please enlighten me. The guy who roams the country and tunes High def sets to the tune of 600 dollars an appointment tuned my dads set. He told my dad never to buy anything but rear projection until the three chip sets become affordable. He said that when properly tuned (board reprogrammed, cabinets velveted, service menu configured, etc...) a rear projection will blow away any similarly tuned DLP. That was a year or so ago, what advances have DLP sets made since then?

Check out the new Sony SXRD 50" (KDS-R50XBR1 MSRP: $3999), I think they will start shipping next week and the initial impressions are very positive from people on AVS forum.

on that note, none of these tv's hdmi inputs will take a 1080p signal, only through the vga port.
So then what is the point of getting it if it only does it through the VGA port??

True, true. That's why I went for it.

I watch a lot of standard definition television, and I hate watching it stretched, so I decided that I needed a television that didn't stuffer those effects.

it upconverts all the signal it recieves to 1080p, however this is not the same as being able to recieve a 1080p signal directly

I personally bought a Sony 50" grand wega (KF50WE620) for my dad's b'day. I like it. Could have got the Samsung but I didn't like the HD reception from cable at the BestBuy. The Sony looked much clearer. Pricewise, it was virtually the same so I went with the one with the better picture.

And I was gonna go with the Samsung based upon all the stuff I read at the CES and other sources, too.

Of course he is gonna say that, he doesn't make any money off single chip sets! Even the three chip LCD/DLPs can be converged, so it'll be easy for him to pitch the sale and continue making a living. They shouldn't really need anything, buy hey if some idiot is willing to pay $900 for a 3ft set of cables - they will pay someone else to come turn a few screws and play around in the service menus on those TVs too.

A good CRT projection tv can look VERY damn good, but the DLP and LCD units are getting much, much closer than they were even a year ago. Add in that they don't need any such tweaking as a CRT unit does, are MUCH smaller, and look better (READ: easy to convince females of) - makes it a no brainer IMO.

Well, just wanted to update everyone that we took the plunge yesterday and picked up this:

Sony KDF-60XS955:
http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTE...SKU=KDF60XS955

The set is about an inch and a half too big for the entertainment center, but amazingly (and surprisingly) my said, "why can't we just move the towers out 1/2" each. You'll hardly notice. Then it will will fit."

Damn I love that woman. Got a good deal on an open box w/o a remote... and found the remote online for $20 (for the OEM remote)... so no biggie. Hopefully going to pick it up tonight. If it doesn't fit in my neighbor's van we'll have to suck it up and have it delivered.

Anyway, thanks for the help all. I'll update you when it's hooked up and I can compare it to the 50" Samsung DLP it's replacing!

OK, so... I picked up up last Monday... but had to leave for business Tuesday... so I didn't get much time to play. At first I did not like it and was contemplating returning it. It was an open box.. and I did not have the remote (as mentioned above), but I did find one.. and it was waiting for me Friday when I got back home. I played with the settings and eventually went online to avsforum.com to find some good configs. I did not have the balls to go into the service menu, however, the settings I found for the basic options made a HUGE difference. I mean, wow. I watched the NFL games yesterday and the World Series last night and damn, it looks hot. One thing I did notice is that on 1080i broadcasts (mainly NFL on CBS), if the camera is zoomed in tight and it moves quick... you'll get a slight blurring of the picture. I don't remember the Samsung doing this.... but it's really very minor and so quick that it doesn't bother me. The other plus is that our new neighbor's are moving in either today or tomorrow... and the guys brother either owns or manages a Home Theater store... so I'm going to have him come in an professionally calibrate the set. It should look phenominal after that.

Oh and BTW, this set is not as affected by the lighting as the DLP was... which is nice. So the DLP was moved up to the bonus room where we can control the lighting.

Anyway, here's a shot I took for the entertainment center thread in Home & Garden. Not the best pic, just a quicky to give you an idea. The picture is the Super Speedway IMAX program which happened to be on INHD2 at the time.

hahah... it would appear that way... but we've had money aside for everything. I'm very, very budget oriented... and we do a LOT of research before doing anything.

It just so happens that a lot of stuff is happening all at once.... but everything has been in the works for months b/c we want to get the house as setup as possible for Thanksgiving since we're having a lot of family from NY in town
