Here's another interesting device. From MSI it's basically a dual screen netbook

no one has hyped anything about an MS tablet except for the courier but it's existence has been denied by CEO steve ballmer all it is right now is a prototype at best. All the hype is for the Apple tablet which is supposedly being announced on Jan 27th

Dell's got a 27in monitor coming out that's the same screen in the new iMac but doesn't have a glossy display, this maybe my new monitor since there's hardly anything happening with OLED this year. It'll be $1049 avail next month

What Would Don Draper Do?
Apparently this year will not only be the year of the tablet but also the year of 3DTV. Am I the only one who could give two shits about 3d? Maybe it's cause I haven't seen any movie in 3d and I don't know what I'm missing or maybe it's cause I don't like the idea of wearing ugly ass glasses to watch TV.
Apparently every TV company is coming out with 3dTV sets and ESPN just announced a new channel ESPN3D along with some new thing from sony and the discovery channel. Is 3D really that good or are they forcing this down our throats to make us upgrade? I was hoping for bigger OLED screens maybe even monitor sized and more 4k resolution stuff I could two shits about 3D.

i don't really care for 3d tv either.
i've seen movies in 3d, but most don't really impress me enough to want to buy a 3d tv. of course, some movies in 3d are better than others and the price of a 3d tv is most likely to make not even consider one as an option.
that said, i thought i heard something about 3d tvs without the glasses? i really wouldn't want to wear glasses all the time. especially when my contacts are out and i have to wear glasses over glasses.

It's amazing people still pay for office at these prices
The standard Office Home and Student version is priced at $149 for packaged software, or $119 for those who wish to download the software and activate it with a key card.
For home office workers and small businesses, Office Home and Business is available for $279 boxed, or $199 for a key card. Office 2010 Professional, which includes a number of tools geared toward enterprise environments, is $499 boxed, or $349 for a key card.

but how else would people get it?
i can get a corporate discount, but it's still > $100.
i got my current version (at home) from torrent.
or i guess you can get it for really cheap if you're in school.

Most people use office for work and therefore your job pays for it and just like everything else targeted towards businesses they charge more. If you're a student you can get office for $60 and MS will also be releasing a FREE version of Office 2010 that will be included on most PCs, it's called Office 2010 Starter and it will be ad supported and it only includes Word and Excel. they're also be a free web version of Word, Excel, Powerpoint and One note. I think most people will use the free versions

it is almost shocking to see how much people will pay for it, but they'll still pay for it.

I'll probably get the home and professional edition if I can't get the academic edition. Office is essential software for businesses, people rely on it to make a living so it seems fair that they can charge a decent price for it. When you compare it to the price of photoshop or the other adobe products it's a deal. Photoshop is over $600 for just it, you can get the full version of Office for less than that. hence why everyone steals photoshop

Big Block go VROOOM!
right, but i'm just saying that there are still a lot of folks out there that will pay the extra $$ because their companies won't pay for office at home, aren't students, don't know about the free versions, etc.

FWIW, I don't think Office is that expensive.

What Would Don Draper Do?
obviously, it depends on the company.
my company won't "buy" office for our home computers. we get a "corporate discount" or they (the company) will install it on our laptops.
for the typical user at home that just needs word, excel, and ppt, i don't think the price is that expensive either.

Also the boxed copies of Office can be installed on more than one PC. The home and student can be used on 3 PCs and the home and business on 2PCs. So for $150 you can put it on 3PCs which is a pretty good deal.

Not too tough to get in, though.
I actually liked Cedia better. No computer stuff, but all the same consumer electronics stuff and you don't have to deal with Las Vegas (and its crappy airport). CES is too big. Not a great show when you are there for work. (I used to run a company that did home theater and home automation).

I'm currently at the Apple store typing this on a 15 MBP (with the Matte screen option). Anyways, I just left the Sony Store where they had the 3DTV on display. I spent a good 5-10 minutes watching it and it was pretty neat. But I already got a headache (seriously) and the idea of wearing those glasses is pretty lame. They've got to come up with a way to do it without glasses.
These glasses where battery powered too which I haven't seen in 3D glasses before. The 3D was pretty good, it seems as if there were 3 depths of field. The first 2 were "3D" so to say and the last one was 2D, I guess once the object gets to far away from the 3D camera it doens't pop anymore. I guess it was a depth of field thing.
If you guys want to see it they should have it at your local sony store. I was hoping to see their new Core i3/i5 based laptops but they said it won't be until Feb 10th.
p.s. if I get a laptop it's gonna have a matte screen.
p.p.s. how do you scroll left and right with the multi-touch trackpad.

3D is such a bullshit, flavor of the month gimmick.
The technology isnt anywhere near being "there" yet. Even Avatar proves that.

Light Peak which is Intels 10Gbps interconnect should be on PCs within a year. Also Intel just announced WiDi which is a way to stream HD video from your PC to your TV using a $100 adapter box and a new PC with a Core i3/i5 processor. I guess this is for people who don't have a PS3 or an Xbox 360 or any other multitude of devices that you can stream HD video to from your PC.

I don't think any are needed. My impression is that you use the Wifi in the computer and it streams to some $100 device you connect to your TV which then takes the signal and converts it to HD. This similar to wireless HDMI but seems much less expensive.
