i was just wondering for those who have a cd burner. i am getting one in a week and wanted to know what u have and what u would recomand.i need one that is pretty fast in writing and one that doesnt mess up your cd.
don't get anything more than 8x is not worth it. You will get more cd's with errors than good cd's. CDRW are better at higher speeds, so 10x or 8x will do fine. A 12x8x32x since there is no such thing as 8x12x32x.
sounds perfect and does not cost much. About brand.....don't have any specific sorry. Good luck.

I have an Adaptec 16X burner - PCMCIA CardBus...
I've burnt at 12X -- I can't do 16X or my buffer runs out -- i think if i add more ram to my computer (plan to double it to 256MB in a while) i should be ok.
Get one of those 16X burn proof ones--- www.tigerdirect.com has em for like $99.99 with NERO or $159 - $30 mail in = $129 with Adaptec.....

I've got the Plextor burner and does it work well
much better than that HP piece of cr@p I had before. Using Nero Burning Rom I can burn at 16x with no buffer under-run errors. Never had a burn fail on me so far! Whatever unit you get, make sure that the drive employs burn-proof technology (as tommyboi said earlier). This will greatly reduce any buffer under-run errors. BTW, adding more memory won't clear up those buffer errors.

Those buffer underruns everyone gets don't solely mean memory is an issue. Buffer underruns occur when data cannot be fed to the cd-burner software fast enough from the hard drive. Common causes of this are slow drives (5400RPM IDE drives and even 7200 RPM drives as well). If you plan on buying a 16x burner and using the full 16x write speed i suggest you go for some scsi drives as the data transfer rate is much faster. Also keep any background applications closed when you are burning a cd at such a high speed just to leave as much system resources as possible to the burnign process.......just my .02
Well, I say TDK or Plextor all da way... they both come out with 24/10/40 drive, now... With burnproof, you will hardly get an error. 3 min. you get a CD, that's FAST!!!
Yep, so get one of those and I am sure you will enjoy it.....

Plextor all the way without a doubt
There is nothing better or more reliable than the Plextor burner. I tried several brands at work and Plextor is the best by far. Now you can get the burner for EIDE with the Burnproof technology that comes with the software. Nero and Adaptec is the best software for all kind of burning. Get up to 24X now or get the 16X & 12X speed the lowest I would recommend. Happy burning!
as someone mentioned above, new cd burners have 'burn proof' technology. the laser is stopped if the buffer is not keeping up. then it resumes when it gets info again. this was impossible before and hence u would get a buffer underrun. so the moral is that whatever burner you get, you should get one with burn proof or equivalent technology. the new tdks have it and I think plextor does as well.

You can get the 16X Yamaha from Best buy
for under $150 now. I tried the Yamaha 16X before but the Plextor is still better. Check their site out at plexor.com for details on the burner.
SSS you need to post some specs on your computer system and what OS before any of us can diag your burning problem. I can burn at 16X no problem. CD to CD or from the hard drive. Make sure you are using 16X compatible cd-r before you try it.

PM me if you need more info.
Don't buy Acer! I have a 4-4-32 for about 2 years and have wasted half of my CD-R disc.
I heard that the HP ones doesn't support Easy CD Creator. Is that true? Can some HP owners confirm that?

Yo Dhiren...it will all depend on several things. If your hard drive is running at 5400rpm and your interface is ATA66 then most likely you won't be able to burn any higher than 8x due to slow data transfer rates. If your HD controller on your m/b can't support ATA100 or better drives, you can purchase a add-on ATA EIDE controller card. In fact, Maxtor is giving these away with the purchase of their hard drives. This upgrade should get you closer to burning at a higher speed...up to at least 12x.

All I could say is buy high quality certified CR's to burn at 16x. I have ATA100 7200rpm, 256mb, etc.....I still get errors at that speed

These are great. Refurbs are ok, but don't count on it lasting too long.
My Next drive is probably going to be a SCSI RW Plextor.. I found that I do alot of burning, that is probably why I killed my drive.
It really doesn't make sense to buy a really fast burner (24X) that is so expensive since most affordable media these days isn't faster than 16X.. By the time they come out with media that can be burned at your fastest speed, the price of your drive would have gone down. Or you would have wasted extra money on faster CD-R discs. So instead of 3min per CD, you will have 5min.

The most success I've had was with TDK CDRs, they also have 16X certified available.

btw, for those CD-RW virgins
CD-RW, RW= rewritable
12X/8X/32X = 12x write/8x re-write/32x read
150KB/S = 1X
so 12X = (150 * 12) = 1800KB/S
1 min = 60 sec
60 * 1800 = 108000KB/min = about 105MB/min
650MB per normal CD-R, 650/105 =
about 6.2 - 6.5 min per full CD
That is the optimal speed, it rarely ever is that way because of other factors on your computer that may slow it down. But this is the time you should estimate for the burning process when considering buying one.
