Can I VM my work computer on my mac?

Here's a question for the pro's. My work provides me with a laptop (Dell Latitude), from time to time I will work at home from it, but need to vpn in to get files off our shared server. Since I hate this laptop and it's size/weight I'm wondering if it's possible to VM it's hd and run that VM on my macbook air? If so what software should I use to image this machines HD? FWIW the dell is running XP.

Maybe. I use the trial version of Symantec Backup Exec to create a system image to an external drive. Then I use VMware Converter to convert it to a VM for vSphere. I think VMware converter can also work with other vmware products but I'm not sure if it works with fusion.

Why not just log in to VPN from your mac? And then port whatever files you need?

Unless you have preinstalled software that you cannot get :/

VM may work. Just do what Stunna has mentioned... http://www.vmware.com/products/converter/

thanks technoking. I'm going to give this VM thing a go first. Would really like to have all the functions available to me that are on my pc, especially things like SAP.

You should be able to use any imaging software to image the drive, then install parallels, vmware or free Oraclebox, boot it up with the imaging boot disk and restore the partition. Maybe...

Got it to work! Vmware vcenter to create an image of my work computer's hd, then simply run it in VMware fusion on my mac. Worked like a charm. Of course I'm going to redo it all tomorrow after I prune all the bs that I've collected of my work laptop's HD to reduce the size of the image. I wonder if I can convince the IT guy to put a fresh install on the work one so I can start fresh, I doubt that will ever happen though.
