Blackberry World Phone (8830)

Anyone have one? Ours just came in (x7) and I am curious how it will synch with the 06 TSX...

I have the 8820 which I believe is essentially the same as the 8830 minus the CDMA capability. I have my synched and working with my 06 TL w/o any issues.

Your thread failed.

But seriously, I remember you were testing out the samsung, no go on those? But I would agree with the blackberry choice, they are ultimate business devices. I got rid of the curve for the iPhone and I've been trying to get the curve back. Happen to get an extra one i'd settle for the 8830?

OK, so now that I have this phone, I have a question...

I need to dial the phone number on the back of my AMEX card, and it is 1-888-BLUE-741.

How the hell do I dial "by letter" on this Blackberry?

When you get to the letters hold down the ALT key and enter the letter. So your screen would look like 1800BLUE741 and when you press send it will automatically figure it out.

Dial "888", press and hold alt. key while typing "blue", release alt key, dial 741.

How do you like it? What carrier do you have? It's time to get for me to get a new phone. I want the blackberry, but I have Verizon. The Bold looks awesome, but dont know when it will be available for Verizon if ever.

I know about the Blackberry Thunder. I'm on HowardForum every now and then. But somehow a blackberry w/o keypad and the scroll is less appealing.

^^^

I HATE anything that resembles an iPhone... Those are toys, not business phones.

There is a reason most of us went with GPS/WIFI with the 8800 series VS camera option and bs like that.

^, The 8820 is by far the best BB I have owned. I am actually on my second one. I also have the iPhone that I tested for business practicality and it sucked. Only advantage I give the iPhone is Safari.

8820 and the 8830 are the same except for that the 8830 uses CDMA and has the ability to roam on GSM towers while the 8820 is strictly GSM.

I have the 8830 through Verizon, and aside from crippling the navigation, I am darn happy with this phone. Every time I think I have found a fault, I find the fix, and it's built in, not some hack. I am just getting used to the BB interface. I do wish the ringtones were louder, though...

I got an 8830 before going to China and I love the interface. I had a Treo and so far don't ever plan on getting rid of a Blackberry.

God, I'm on the fence with the 8830 or waiting for the Bold. I'm hitting up craigs list for a used that has minimal wear and tear. Then when the Bold does come over to Verizon, I'll get it. How long does the battery last when you are using it?

Call quality was good, I bought my SIM card in Wanzhou at China Mobile. I didn't have data while over there, but not sure if it was the card I got or just no data where I was at.

I had so many Treo "lock ups". Man this BB has not even skipped a beat. I really didn't want to like them because of the cultishness, but it is a great handheld. Just wish it shipped with Docs2Go.

I've been running 4.5 OS for a week or so now and it's only locked up playing Brickbreaker and that may be my theme screwing up. I haven't uploaded Docs2Go since I don't plan on creating any documents and my BB has opened everything sent to me on it own.

Disclaimer: This info is for educational purposes only. I have no cntrol over what you do to your blackberry and am not liable at all.

With that being said:

D/L and install Desktop Manager 4.5 found here
D/L and install the OS which can be found here. (note: that I have not tried this OS since I dont have a 88xx so I do not know if it works.)
Once you install it onto your computer the next time you connect to DM it will automaticly be installed.
Once it finishes install, log onto your BIS and resend service books.

Let me know if you have any issues.

EDIT: I found this tutorial. IT EVEN HAS PICTURES!!!

I am worried because my BB is hooked to a BPS (smaller than a BES), and I don't have desktop synch set up because all my synching goes through the Exchange server.

Me =

There should be no issues. Since BPS which IIRC is exactly like BES but for smaller companies and less units on the server. I know on other forums people with BES upgraded with no issues. The only issue that arose was:

If you're on a BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) you should check in with an IT representative before attempting to upgrade your smartphone's handheld software, because some IT policies can block or partially block a new OS install.

so check with your IT depart if you have one. If everything is a go than all I can say is grow some balls.

I should mention that I picked one of these up last month. GREAT phone worldwide

Definitely update the OS to 4.5 if you can, the browser is much better.

It gets a bad mark for Verizon disabling the GPS, but its not too bad.
