Blackberry email outage?
Blackberry email outage?
I haven't gotten any emails on my phone since some time last night, and it seems to be the case with a bunch of friends also. Seems like all carriers are ZAPPED for the moment.
From crackberry:
http://crackberry.com/nationwide-bis...-most-carriers
The tip line is going to explode - it looks like BIS email is down for most carriers across the US and parts of Canada. No one is receiving email, but it appears that browser, BlackBerry Messenger, voice and SMS are still working however. No reports of exatcly when things went down or when they'll be up and running. Keep it here and we'll report anything as it pops up. Jump into the forums for more discussion.
Here we go again... Another widespread outage. No official word from RIM yet, but it is clearly an issue.
Given their already precarious market position this is certainly not going to help them.
Living and working in Waterloo, Ontario I have a slight vested interest in the success of RIM. If RIM crashes and burns the entire local economy will feel the ripples throughout the region. Also, I love the blackberry devices compared to the other options that exist - not necessarily from a performance and feature point of view, but from a functional point of view. I compose probably 50 emails a day on my blackberry - if I had to do that on a touch screen keyboard I would die.
Any other BB users out there missing their emails and bbms.

I have toe thumbs... I have to support a few iphone users and each time I have to use their devices I am ready to throw them out the window after trying to type on them. The only keyboard worse was the old BB Pearl. That and I would much rather send out misspelled words instead of the crap that iPhone's spelling correction comes up with.
3rd....
What caused the messaging delays
The messaging delays were caused by a core switch failure within RIM’s infrastructure. Although the system is designed to failover to a back-up switch, the failover did not function as previously tested. As a result, a large backlog of messaging data was generated. We continue to work toward restoring normal service as quickly as possible.

Hell of on infrastructure you got there, RIM!

I have big thumbs and I type just fine on touchscreen devices....even the iphone.
I have yet to have a missed email message on my iPhone. I was a huge blackberry fan/user until RIM kept putting out devices that couldn't compete with the market. Plus, their infrastructure has always been an issue and they failed to learn from past mistakes.
IMO, this is the nail in RIM's coffin.
Isn't this the problem with blackberry. It adds another layer on top of the network which just means another thing that can fail. You can't get around the wireless carriers network but going BB increases you chance of network outages because now if either your carrier or BB goes down you're screwed.
Can someone explain to me whats so great about BES/BIS, how is it better than exchange activesync? What can BB do in email or anything for that matter that the competition can't do? Besides physical keyboards, I'm talking BB OS features or back end infrastructure.

Not so much anymore. But, from a corporate perspective....in the not too distant past, BES had better reporting, policy management, security, remote management, and push email. Exchange Active Sync has came a long way in the past couple of years and is pretty much on par with everything that made RIM great for corporate email.
That said, syncing with EAS on my android phone is not nearly as reliable as my iPhone.
When you implemented BES/BIS that was in addition to having an Exchange server right? So instead of turning on ActiveSync you set up a BES. I've never done it but my IT bosses have and they hate having to deal with BB/BES I think only a couple of our clients still use it.
Yup....we have an exchange server and BES. The BES server goes down nearly every weekend after the scheduled reboot. The blackberry services always have to be manually started. Quite a pain. RIM support never seems to have an answer as to why it happens, but they make sure to mention they are adding support for android and iphones soon to the BES.
Half of our iPhone 4s will be in tomorrow and the rest shortly after that. We will be completely off the BES by mid Nov.

Another advantage of BES is data compression. I can do with a 500MB data plan what most do with a 6GB plan.
Also, from an enterprise standpoint the device control is good. IE. I can create a WIFI profile on 100 blackberries in minutes without any user intervention. You can deploy apps wirelessly, etc.
iPhone/Exchange Activesync is getting there though.

My emails are coming to my bb just fine.

My fat fingers hit too many keys on touchscreen phones.
