and, the screen is substantially larger than the 650's, yet the resolution is substantially lower - a bad combination (320x240 vs the 650's 320x320)... For a NEW device hitting the market NOW, that resolution is disappointing. The next generation smartphones will be somewhere around 480 x 360 - and higher - and this should be happening NOW. Hell, there already are "smart" devices that are at 480 x 320, and have been out for a WHILE (Palm Tungsten T5 - late 2004, Sony Clie PEG-NX73V - July 2003, to name a couple) - 320x240 for a NEW bleeding-edge device is disappointing. Wi-fi, megapixel, EVDO, is all great... but damn. I guess there is definitely gonna be demand for the 6800..... :< /rant :2cents:

Sorry... but...

The 6700 completely SCHOOLs the treo650 in every way. Especially build quality.

It's *smaller* than the 650, you talking maybe 1mm thicker, tops. Thats the only dimention it's bigger. The 6700 is smaller otherwise.

The resolution difference is NOT noticable. I gave my treo 650 to my girlfriend and I don't look back. Especially at all of the problems the 650 has... palmone is getting sued over it... Fonts on the 6700 on their smallest readbale size are already too small. I dont know what a higher resolution would buy you. It'd be cool yes, but it's not a major thing on this device. Your naming all of these NON-phone PDAs for resolution comparisons, it doesn't hold any water as an argument. I could show you a PDA 10 years old (original apple PDA the newton) with a higher resolution and I could say that about ANY PDA that has come out since.

Show me another handset *this size* with a resolution thats higher... there isn't one.

Only thing close is the HTC-Universal (it has a VGA screen 640x480). And that device is HUGE. I mean HUGE!

There is a ton of treo 650 users who hate their devices... most I know are on their 3-4th unit. And I'm not talking about the yuppies who carry them around to show them off... They wouldn't have a clue as they only use the treo as a new dress to show off. For them the phone could be off and it'd still serve it's purpose.

I don't have ANY monetary commitment to the 650 or the 6700 (i.e. I didn't pay for either of them) so my opinion isn't at all swayed or biased. It's based 100% on trial use.

I hear you on the screen resolution, honestly I need to try one out before I can make any real conclusions. :) And, I don't doubt its a lot better than the 650. It's just that for being a brand-new product, I thought the resolution would be higher.

:werd: I was thinking the same thing originally. And I actually didn't like the color/form factor. Then after a couple weeks of use my opinion changed. Then when I looked back at the treo650 it looked dated...it was wierd.

Panasonic is a smartphone. it runs symbian o/s just like the nokia series 60. Only thing is, if you buy one, you will not be able to get a warranty from Panasonic. Even though the merchant may say it has a warranty, you would have to go back to them for any warranty work...at that time they will direct you to Panasonic. Not worth the heartache and trouble. Panasonic does not have a U.S. phone dept anymore.

Which Windows Mobile 5.0 device did you get? JasJar/Universal? :)

kensteele 09-28-2005 06:36 PM

So the first sentence of the press release says Sprint (NYSE: S) today announced the launch of the Sprint PCS VisionSM Smart Device (PPC-6700), the first PDA/phone-combination handset in the country to offer the new Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 software.... And that happened a week or two ago. What other Win Mob 5 device is out for sale in the US market today? Educate me. :)

Panasonic quality is very very bad, I would not go close to them, there price is low, but the phones are crappy, I have a G51 at the store brand new that wont charge or even turn on and Panasonic doesnt have a U.S. Repair center unlike Nokia, Sony Ericsson and etc, so I am just out of luck

Not enough data yet.

Probably going to be close to $625.

Great phone so far!
