only reason why i got the apple TV is cause i like the idea behind Airplay and being able to push videos audio and pictures to it from my iPhone.

the atv can connect via wireless N, but choose Ethernet cause :dunno: maybe more stability and faster? :dunno:
and i can control it via the remote app on my iPhone.

you can push any video and audio format supported by iTunes to the apple TV.

so you could be on your PC and be like "ohh i want to watch/listen to this on the big screen/speakers" and just push it to the apple TV.

the airvideo thing im using is just a work around since iTunes doesnt support divx or mkv files.

I am looking for something that doesn't care what format I have, just plays it and passes it to the receiver.

Movies I have on my PC are in ISO format, so I use Daemon tools to watch them on the monitor/laptop.

Windows 7 has a feature called "play to" which is DLNA's version of airplay. It does the same thing as airplay, allows you to push video or audio to a DLNA device like a receiver or TV. I just don't know about handhelds. There's the LG quantum, Samsung captivate and HTC G2 phones that have DLNA streaming capabilities. I just don't know if those devices can stream media that's stored on another DLNA device like a windows 7 laptop or NAS and stream that media to a TV. Windows 7 can but you're looking for a handheld. Maybe in a future Windows Phone 7 device or Windows 8 tablet.

Well no DLNA or airplay device is going to stream ISOs. you're gonna have to convert those into an actual video format instead of a disc image before any service will stream them around the house.

I'm certainly no Apple whore (just an iPhone and iPod here) but I've gotten used to converting stuff to a compatible format that it doesn't bother me. I was into MKVs and the sort until 360 Extender took a dump and I couldn't get it going again. The 360 plays the Apple formats fine, though.

So it makes sense at least for me to grab an ATV at some point. While other options would be a bit more open, I know it'll work.

NO, you got it mixed up... I don't want to stream TO the handheld, Iwant the handheld to be able to be on the same wireless network so it can CONTROL the source PC from anywhere in the house (mainly the living room). The content would stream from PC to receiver/TV. I am trying to avoid having HT PC if I can. I don't see myself browsing the web on the TV, so why have an entire PC there?

ISO is not the real issue. Something to receive the signal at my TV/Receiver, whatever the signal is, from a media "jukebox" application that ALSO has an HTML front-end so I can use a Touch or similar as a remote on the WiFi network. I don't really care if the PC to Stereo connection is wired or WiFi. WiFi would be nice, but I can run Cat6.

If you were talking to me, I understood you clearly. you must've misread me. I was saying I don't know of a handheld device that does that (not that one doesn't exist). It seems that I simple app could handle this.

I'm with you, I don't want the handheld to be the middle man, I don't want the video feed to go through the handheld.

You could just RDP into your PC from your handheld and control it that way. Not the best experience but it would do what you wanted.

Any handheld with a browser could do it. Bring up the internal IP address of the jukebox front end and viola. The handheld is just the remote control.

Here is an example of one tool. There are free ones too, and at least for Linux, some that don't care what the file type is...

My main concern is getting the data to the receiver and having a web enabled media browser.

yup. I had that on my iPad and I have that on my PC and Macs. If you get an Apple TV you can jailbreak it and run XBMC on there too. XBMC supports the DLNA Play to feature I was mentioning so you can do play to from WMP and send it to the XBMC device connected to your TV or receiver

So, with XBMC, I can keep all my music and movies on my PC or a networked location, use a Touch/wifi device as a remote to access the XBMC frontend on my network, and push the content to the Apple TV which will be connected to my receiver?

not exactly. The setup would be apple tv connected to receiver. All you media on your PC or at least accessible by your PC in Windows. Then you could RDP using app on handheld to your PC then choose file to "play to" Apple TV running XBMC, file would then begin to play automatically on XBMC.

Apple TV comes with 802.11N

but if you had an apple TV running XBMC I'd just use the remote and you can set XBMC to use SMB file sharing then you can just browse for the file you want that's on your PC. No need to do all that extra stuff.

Why not just enable network sharing on your PC then have XBMC connect to your network share and browse for the files.

On the TV in the Living Room I have a Xbox 360 that I use to browse the movies on my WHS. I pick which movie I want from the list and watch it. On the TV in my bedroom I have PS3 that does the same thing. On my ipad I use an app called FileBrowser which connects to the SMB share on my WHS and I browse for the file I want and watch it. On the Macs I have XBMC setup to do the same thing. It's connected to my WHS and I can browse movies that are on my WHS and play them. It also downloads all the photoart and metadata for the movies and displays them

I have no network hardware attached to my home theater, and :blush: am running XP Pro on the PC...

Just get an Apple TV and Jailbreak it then install the XBMC app. XP pro is all you need just create a network share in windows for the folder(s) you want to share and then use the SMB option in XBMC and it will find you files easily and you can stream them. The apple TV has built in WiFi so just plug it into your TV or receiver and you're good to go.

I've been thinking about a WD Live Plus for a long time. They seem really cool. The only down side I see is wireless requires a compatible USB adapter. The feature I am most interested in is being able to attach an external hard drive to it.

you might be able to control it with your harmony one, i believe it uses iR so it's possible.
