My problem us my laptop broke and I only have a desktop. Decision is toneither get a laptop or go with the iPad. I still have an iMac that I use. Biggest problem before was that all my music and pictures were never synched up and I though the iPad might do just fine. I would just use it to search on a couple of sights and pay bills.

yeah it's the same situation browsing on the iPhone except it's bigger. It does not replace a laptop but maybe in your situation it might but I wouldn't push it. If you do any work on your laptop or plan to at any point then you don't want one of these.

it's replaced my laptop in 94% of situations. Including all my business meetings with clients etc where I need to take notes out of the office.

I swore off the Ipad, then folded and bought one because my wife wanted it. Sure enough, i now read more magazines than ever using Zinio, and it covers literally 90% of my web browsing and movie watching. I use netflix like crazy now. Also most web content is being converted to html5 so i rarely bump into a video i cant watch.

I just dont' get watching porn on an iPad or on a laptop. How do you even do it? I require a desktop and 27" monitor. I have a laptop as well and have zero porn on there and have no intention of consuming any on that device nor my iPhone or iPad. Desktop. only.
So if you've come to the conclusion that I will always have a desktop in my arsenal you are correct.

Ok so I have the spirit jailbreak. If I don't want to use that anymore and I want the update. Do I just update or do I have to restore to a nonjailbroken state before I update?

backgrounder? terminal? what about default ssh password, I changed that from alpine to something else. how do I delete these apps, they don't have the x on them like normal apps do when the icons jiggle.

Ok I'm back! I'm excited to test the wifi though to be honest I did some adjustments to the wifi in my house which probably helped alleviate this wifi issue so the wifi problem probably isn't as severe now as it was. I'll check for better wifi range though! God I hope this works!

Well it's definitely better! It's not perfect but it's much improved. I get probably about 20ft more wifi range. For my test I was streaming a movie from my server and I was able to sit in the next room over where I used to get no signal and stream video. I haven't had it be a dick about joining networks yet. I've had it disconnect from the network but when it does I just go back to setting and join again once I'm closer and it hasn't hassled me for passwords or what not.
I also was at a restaurant that I'm sort of the IT person for and I was sitting at a table and even though I only had 1 bar of signal FWTW (I was about 50ft away from the router) it stayed connected the whole time and was pretty fast at loading pages. So I'd say wifi has moved up from frustratingly unacceptable to acceptable. The Windows 7 802.11n laptop I got for my niece is still twice as good as the iPad for wifi range.
Mad invisible rep points to anyone who knows what movie I was watching, this is the opening scene....

I haven't mentioned it yet but now let me show you what I'M using this device for. This was the plan I had in mind when I was at the store looking at this thing and I'm quite happy that it's going along so smoothly (besides the iPad wifi bug cockblock).
I have a hyper-v virtualization server that has on it a total of 2.5TB of storage that I use for a variety of things. I'm using a Server 2008 R2 host VM as file share and I'm currently in the process of ripping all of the good DVDs in the house and then converting them to h.264 MP4s to store on the server. I'm setting up the movies library in Windows Media Center (I'll discuss that when I'm done in the 7 thread) and I've setup the two macs to connect to the server and they can now stream movies in your collection over wifi using VLC player.
But with the iPad I found this app called FileBrowser and it is exactly what I wanted. It allows me to connect to my Windows or Mac machines and view files just like Explorer or Finder do. I can then stream video or music to my iPad from any machine in the house(which currently isn't only but 20-30ft since apple hasn't fixed the wifi bug yet). I can copy these files to my iPad I can even then copy files those same files from my iPad to another machine. So I can copy files between machines without being at either of them and I can also delete files from my machines.

It's worked wonderfully for me, I just had to enter my login info for each machine and it connects almost instantly to your machine, it's a very snappy responsive app and it was only $3 which was an introductory price so if this is what you're looking for I'd jump on it. Highly Recommended!

And if not, they have their own iPhone/iPad/Android app that'll let you connect to the NAS.

As long as it's not using an old version of SMB which it shouldn't since it's a new NAS you should have no problem.
Version 1.5 brought some nice improvements including much improved bandwidth performance and Airport Extreme and Time Capsule support. The 1.5 update and iOS 3.2.1 give me great performance and I no longer have bandwidth performance issues. Version 1.6 came out yesterday too which makes it even better

If you want to be sure if the app will work with your NAS you can try the netportal lite app on the iphone and see if it will connect and if it works then filebrowser will work too.

I use the PlayOn service to stream. You can stream a ton of content from the Internet (Netflix, Hulu, Pandora, ESPN, CBS, PBS, TV.com, video podcasts, and bunch of others) or stuff from your hard drive. It stream to my TV/home theater via my DirecTV box or PS3, and to my iPad over WiFi. You browse content or access personal Netflix and Hulu queues right on the TV or iPad. The PC needs to be on, but that's it. Not too many other ways to watch Hulu on the iPad without paying for Hulu plus.

You can get 3.2.1 here if you don't have it already and then use jailbreakme.com
http://appldnld.apple.com/iPad/061-8...5_Restore.ipsw
dont bother going to 3.2.2 just do the PDF patch like you did on your iPhone
