Apple Airport Express / AirTunes

Anyone with any experience with this gadget?

Essentially, how does it work?

Currently, I am still in the stone age and have a non-wireless network throughout my house, however, I would like to be able to connect my main computer to my Home Audio Receiver via this wireless Airport Express from Apple.

So, if my networking skills are what I think they are, basically I would need two Airports, one that sends the wireless signal from my router and my machine to the other Airport that would receive it and feed the Receiver with the music via the RCA Cables?

Am I leaving out anything?

Are you confusing it with the Apple TV?

I'm looking into one myself. What I would do is set up a wireless network via router (Linksys, Netgear, Apple Airport Base) and then a get the Apple TV. You connect that to your TV and you have full access to whats on your iTunes.

Or you can get the AirPort Extreme Base as your wireless router, http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPL...nplm=MA073LL/A . Once your network is configured you can get the AirPort Base Station to connect to your stereo http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPL...nplm=M9470LL/A From what I've read you can also connect a printer to this and have an internet connection...

Nope, I am trying to figure out how I can connect my iTunes from my main computer to my receiver, across my house, wirelessly.

The airport express connects to your computers wifi card. It can function as a wireless router, a music bridge, or both. It can also connect a usb printer to, or extend the range of, an existing network.

You can use the same airport as both a wireless router and for playing music, if your modem is in the same physical location as the stereo. Connect the airport to your router with an ethernet cable and it will create a wireless network. It will also function as a music bridge and allow you to send music to your stereo (via a 3.5mm --> RCA or optical cable).

Does your main computer have a wireless card in it? If it does, all you need to do is plug the airport express into your receiver and iTunes will see it there. You don't need any other wifi network.

Nope.

That is why I was wondering if I would need two AirPorts, one that is connected off my router, then another next to my receiver.

That still wouldn't give you a way to connect your computer to either one of the airports. You need a wireless card so the computer can pick up the network.

I'd go with something like this http://www.amazon.com/Linksys-WUSB11...9777647&sr=8-4

Plug that into your computer, and the airport into your receiver, and they will see each other so you can play music.

Oh, I thought that if you connected one of the Airports with Cat5 from your Router it would act like a wireless router to connect to the other Airports, where ever they may be.

Thanks for the link, seems to be a cheap alternative to two Airports.

I have the airport express.

I believe you can access it through third party hardwired routers.

It's pretty slick. I've had it for a few years now.

Yep, you can do that also, although I don't think this would let you stream music. I believe you have to have the computer connected wirelessly to the airport express network in order to do so.

ermm maybe its me but the airport express my gf has is a POS. it freezes up often and the config tends to be a PIA. the potential is there but i dont think its all that reliable to be on 24/7

granted ive gone through a few different routers, so far my linksys has worked wonders for over 4 years 24/7

so who knows. i wish my linksys would hook printers up and send music sometimes but i think it works better.

my $.02

The config is a pia? Are you using the airport software? Setup should be nothing more than about 5 clicks.

i dont have a mac first off. having to find the software is the hardest part, now we keep the cd out so if i have to install it i can. the brilliant part about a netgear or a linksys is that you just have to access the router from ip address. the software from there is okay, but then again none the router companys have great software.

once your set up your right it works pretty good, but once you have to open a port you better hope you have that program or that it does it in a timely manner.
