Anyone very knowlegable about SEO?
I have some anti SEO questions I need answered. Anyone got the inside scoop in ways people can dramatically (like rocket a result to #1 in a week from way down on the list) artificially increase the ranking of a page on a Google search?
I'm in the beginning stages of planning SEO for my new business and without spending a butt load of cash there is no way to accomplish results like that in that period of time, unless it's a HIGHLY specific arena and even then a week is a VERY short period of time to get huge results. Hell propagation can take 24-72 hours after the new plan is launched.

Problem is, someone is artificially increasing the rankings of a page THEY DO NOT OWN or maintain, so no access to keywords. It is a page that has disparaging info about a client of mine.
It always rockets to the top of the search results just before movement in the matter.

One approach comes to mind.
Background: from Google's Webmaster Central
So .. someone who wanted to promote site "X" as the definitive resource for a given search term could set up a shitload of sites that all include that search term and related terms in their content, and have those sites link back to site "X" producing the illusion that site "X" is the definitive resource.
If site "X" is the unflattering site slamming your client for "some bad thing", then by setting up other sites that talk about that same "some bad thing" and having those sites link back to site "X" - site "X" becomes the definitive web resource whenever someone searches for "some bad thing".

Link schemes
Your site's ranking in Google search results is partly based on analysis of those sites that link to you. The quantity, quality, and relevance of links count towards your rating. The sites that link to you can provide context about the subject matter of your site, and can indicate its quality and popularity. However, some webmasters engage in link exchange schemes and build partner pages exclusively for the sake of cross-linking, disregarding the quality of the links, the sources, and the long-term impact it will have on their sites. This is in violation of Google's webmaster guidelines and can negatively impact your site's ranking in search results. Examples of link schemes can include:
Links intended to manipulate PageRank
Links to web spammers or bad neighborhoods on the web
Excessive reciprocal links or excessive link exchanging ("Link to me and I'll link to you.")
Buying or selling links that pass PageRank
