Anyone had a defective LCD from Dell?

My friend just bought a Dell 24" wide screen LCD and after one week of use, it developed a vertical line running top to bottom through the screen. Dell says they'll only replace it with a refurbished unit and the best compensation they'll offer him is $100 off his next purchase. I say thats BS. He bought a NEW monitor, not a refurb, and that he should go asshole on them and escalate it until he gets what he paid for. Is he likely to get a new replacement or is that refurb policy set in stone? I know its industry policy to use refurbs as warranty replacement, but come on, its only a week old.

Do they offer a return policy on that? Dell usually has a 30 day satisfaction policy on stuff. Send it back and get refund. Then buy it new again if he wants, or look elsewhere.
