AMD OWNS Intel in the value segment

If you are building/getting a cheap PC, and you get an Intel based system, you are a damn fool
http://www.anandtech.com/cpu/showdoc.html?i=1927&p=1

this applies to notebooks as well, but i would choose a centrino/pentium-m chip over a mobile athlon for the time being, but absolutely NOT a p4 or celeron based notebook

I got my Compaq laptop with an AMD chip for about $200 less and more add-ons than the P4 version with the same performance numbers.

I've said that all along as far as bang for your buck you can't beat the AMD. plus the AMD has a better bus plus their ram is HELL OF A LOT cheaper than Intels. that's why this PC has a AMD XP chip in it with 512 mgs of ram

that's weird cause i've got my XP chip computer about 2 years ago(it was a early XP) and i've had no problems with it(knock on wood) but i order a extra large fan for it. but i've heard a lot of cooling problems with AMD. if you can get past the cooling part( with a larger fan) your PC should be great

But they have built in protection. For me...AMD...for my clients who need realiability in harsh environments where the fan may not last...Intel. Some AMD mobos have the protection but it kicks in too slow.

all the amd chips have it, but yea some of the mobos dont implement it properly. lets see who you use for reliability in harsh environments next year when intel ships prescott which dissapates almost 100w, tejas which will be well over 100w, and the opteron in the 30-50w range

Got a 6 mo old Vaio with AMD chip -- Slow as hell to boot (don't know why), but almost as fast as my Dell Dimension 2.6 ghz desktop, and the whole thing with 512k came in under a grand! Great value.

I'll use Intel if they have built in thermal shutdown (functioning) and AMD doesn't

nforce2 has rock solid stability, and even the via chipsets arent that bad. via makes chipsets for p4 too you know

and memory compatibility? please

if you guys want to waste your money, thats your business. remember the point of the linked article is VALUE performance, the high end market is entirely different. a top end AMD system and intel system will cost roughly the same, although the AMD system (athlon fx) will still outperform the p4, it wont be by as big as margins as the value comparision. purchasing a high end p4 system is justifyable, although some of you have bad impressions of AMD from their k6 days. stability and compatibility have NOT been an issue since the socketA k7 came out. they're now making the k8.

if AMD still had their problems of old, they wouldnt be in business today, and certainly wouldnt have IBM and Sun making servers with their chips

I agree, and for me...I use AMD in my personal system...and will even put it in a build...but when I do professional systems in harsh environments or stuff where HT helps (couple of inexpensive non-linear edit systems, tole em to go mac, but they wouldn't) I use P4's If AMD gets a reliable thermal shutdown so it can't fry the processor, then I would put that in the harsh environments.

i agree on the statement that amd does run hot ... but with a simple fan upgrade theres no probs what so ever .. i have my 1.8 oc'ed to 2.2 and im runnin at a kool 42 degrees

and the value is better not only for the amd chips but all other amd compatible hardware .. i would never go intel
