8 Bay NAS device

I am looking at 8 bay NAS devices for home.

I have gone through all my machines and reilized that I have over 10TB of external hard drives.

I am looking to combine them all into one device.
I have looked at freeware NAS solutions like freenas but I want to minimize my server footprint and that just keeps one of the servers that I want to get rid of around.

I am looking at the Drobo 800fs, Synology 1812+, and the qnap TS-869L.

The reviews on the Drobo are awful.
The Synology has the ability to add 2 expansion units to mas out at 18 drives but they say it takes forever to format init the devices. and the qnap had an issue last year with loosing data (of course I can't find anything recent about that)

Does anyone have any experience with any of these devices.

Mark,
I know it's local storage, not NAS but I use:

http://www.micronet.com/products/raidbank5.html

It's a 5 bay box that can take up to 4TB drives, and you can buy it unpopulated for $450.

I currently run one with 5 1TB drives but am planning to swap them out for 2TBs shortly and it has never even burped, despite me doing some very data intensive read/writes.

Anyway, they have NAS solutions, too but I don't have any experience with them. Been using their storage boxes for about 6 years now.

Thought it was worth mentioning.

I have a lower end 4bay Synology and I like it. The GUI is nice. One thing I really like about it is that it's quiet.

Yea

I am leaning toward the Synology, because honestly how often am I going to need to go through an init cycle.
I also like that I can fill it with cheaper 3TB drives and then expand with the eternal unit if I fill that up.

I made a whole thread about it. The GUI doesn't match what the hardware says when you do have a problem. The fact they use proprietary coding screws you hard. And their senior tech is socially challenged with aspergers or something like it...and the company won't back their product.

So, luckily, I make back ups of back ups and lost very little...but drobo doesn't stand behind their product nor care about their consumer...so I told them to fuck themselves...sold mine on CL, and have left them horrible reviews whenever I have the chance.

This was like 1-2 years ago?

I bought the Synology DS1812+ and 6 3TB WD NAS drives.
I like that it has room to grow and at about 13TB usable it should be good for my immediate needs.

Well the array showed up and only 2 drives.

I installed it and it went smoothly. Now will be a test to see how it handles adding drives.
I am not copying any data to it yet, just screwing around. Also when I updated the firmware it gives me the option of installing an ssd cache disk.
