17" Macbook Pro charger?

I am on my second Magsafe charger for my Macbook Pro. The insulation on the cable keeps splitting. I was wondering if there are other OEM ones out there that will work just as good. The one through Apple is like $80. Thanks for the help. John

Ive never seen a non-apple magsafe adapter. You can put electrical tape on it or get a new or used one. For a 17 inch you need the 85 watt one.

Just read some reviews. I'd stay away from cheapy stuff personally, they never seem to work.

And how can you afford the MBP but not the charger?

Buy a used Apple charger from eBay or craigslist if you can't afford a new one.

Apple hasn't (and likely never will) licensed their patent for the Magsafe so anything you find that isn't made by Apple is risky.

Apple replaced my 2008 aluminum MacBook charger a year ago for this very issue and then replaced the replacement a few months ago, no questions asked. Give it a try

I have the money for a new one, just don't feel like spending $80 every year when the same thing happens over and over again.

They really don't break, I have like 5 of them laying around, some from 2007 with no issues.
