Professional Wrestling: News and Discussion Thread

I won't confess to being an avid watcher nowadays but did quite a bit during the Monday Night Wars between WWE and WCW. Loved the Rock.

And of course, as a kid, I remember Hulk Hogan, Andre the Giant, Mr. Perfect, and etc.

Anyhow, noticed there is no thread for this "sport". Starting one for us to discuss anything and/or news-worthy.

So are we going to move every thread about movies and tv into sports talk? "Professional wrestling" is not a sport, it's a freaking soap opera starting actors.

Yes, many of them are physically fit and the entertainment the provide requires athleticism. So does being a ballet dancer, it's not a sport either.

I channel surfed to an episode of RAW a few weeks back...Stephanie McMahon and HHH are now kinda the "GMs" of the show...and obviously, the bad guys akin to when Vince was active on TV?

Ya, the lack of any Finlandians in the WWE is disturbing.

Not a regular viewer but I may occasionally watch to see what's going on if the TV's on during a RAW broadcast.

I caught some of last weeks RAW. Was channel flipping and the kids asked me to stop so I did. Must have been the first time I've watched since the days of Rock/Stone Cold and the RAW vs Nitro wars.

It was pretty boring IMO. And the fact that they kept advertising the old guard at every commercial tells me that was wrestling's peak and that popularity hasn't been captured since.

I agree...they appear to be in a bit of a funk. Nothing compares to the Monday Night wars between WCW and WWE...during the Attitude Era (is that what it was called?).

But, that was some entertaining stuff back then.

Dusty Rhodes Dead -- WWE Legend Dies

WWE superstar Dusty Rhodes -- famously known as "The American Dream" -- has died at age 69 ... the WWE confirms.

Rhodes -- real name Virgil Runnels -- passed away Thursday morning.

Rhodes, who famously rocked polka dot tights during his legendary career, was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2007.

Dusty had 4 children -- including two sons who also became wrestling superstars -- Goldust (Dustin Runnels) and Stardust (Cody Runnels).

The WWE issued a statement saying, "WWE extends its sincerest condolences to Runnels’ family, friends and colleagues."

WWE superstar Triple H posted a comment about his friend ... saying, "Saddened to hear the passing of Dusty Rhodes. Legend, teacher, mentor, friend...Love you Dream."

UPDATE:

11:37 AM PT -- Officials tell us ... emergency personnel responded to Dusty's home in Orlando, FL at 5:56 AM Wednesday morning after getting a call reporting a 69-year-old male had taken a fall.

We're told Rhodes was transported to a nearby hospital ... where he eventually passed away Thursday morning.

We're told Dusty's immediate family raced to be by his side as soon as they learned he was in the hospital.

Our sources tell us Dusty suffered "numerous complications" throughout the night ... which ultimately proved fatal.

RIP Chyna. I was very into wrestling during the Attitude era and she was just awesome. She had a lot of demons... sad to read she died so young.

Chyna, former professional wrestler, dead at age 46 | abc7.com

CHYNA, FORMER PROFESSIONAL WRESTLER, DEAD AT AGE 46

Thursday, April 21, 2016 12:03AM

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Former professional wrestler and actor Joan Laurer, better known as Chyna, has died at the age of 46, her manager confirmed to ABC7 Entertainment Guru George Pennacchio.

According to her manager, Chyna was found dead in her bed at her Redondo Beach home on Wednesday.

Redondo Beach police said a friend went to check on Chyna at her apartment in the 900 block of Esplanade after she hadn't answered her phone in days.

Investigators said the Los Angeles County Coroner's Department would determine the exact cause of death, but stated there were no indications of foul play.

Chyna rocketed to fame as a wrestler in the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) from 1997 to 2001.

She began lifting in her hometown of Rochester, New York, at the age of 15, and at one time could reportedly bench press 325 pounds.

Chyna was open about growing up in a home with alcoholism and would later have her own documented struggle with drugs.

In 2007, viewers saw a different side of Chyna when she appeared on the reality TV show "The Surreal Life." She also appeared on "Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew" the following year.

Chyna later pursued a career in porn, stating her first adult film gave her a newfound confidence to get back on her feet.

She also posed in "Playboy" magazine and had a New York Times' best-selling autobiography titled "If They Only Knew."

Chyna's manager said she was on prescription medication for sleep deprivation and severe anxiety, but stated he was not sure if that played a role in her death.

Many media reports listed her age as 45, but her manager told ABC7 that she actually turned 46 in December. Redondo Beach police and the coroner's department also identified her as 46 years old.

RIP: Chyna

Police found wrestler Chyna dead after 911 call | WFLA.com
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Chyna, the tall, muscle-bound, raven-haired pro-wrestler who rocketed to popularity in the 1990s and later made the rounds on reality TV, has died, authorities said.

Police in Southern California said they were responding to a 911 call from a friend of the former World Wrestling Entertainment wrestler when they found her dead in her Redondo Beach apartment.

A friend had gone Wednesday to check on Chyna, whose real name is Joan Marie Laurer, after she had failed to answer her phone for a few days, Redondo Beach police said in a statement. The friend told the 911 operator that Laurer wasn’t breathing.

The 46-year-old Laurer was dead when officers arrived, police said.

Neither police nor coroner’s officials have released any cause of death. An autopsy was planned in the next few days.

Laurer billed herself as the “9th Wonder of the World” because her wrestling predecessor Andre the Giant had already called himself the eighth.

She was a member of the wrestling squad that dubbed itself “D-Generation X,” often wrestled against men and at one point was the WWE women’s champion. After leaving the WWE in 2001, Laurer posed for Playboy and appeared in adult films and on reality TV, including the shows “The Surreal Life” and “Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew.”

A statement posted Wednesday night on her website reads, “Today we lost a true icon, a real life superhero. Joanie Laurer aka Chyna, the 9th Wonder of the World has passed away. She will live forever in the memories of her millions of fans and all of us that loved her.”

Laurer was a native of Rochester, New York, and graduated from the University of Tampa in Florida before taking up wrestling.

She joins a long list of WWE professional wrestlers who have died relatively young, including Rick Rude, Curt “Mr. Perfect” Hennig, the Ultimate Warrior and Owen Hart.

Quite the up-and-down life...while I cannot say I was an avid viewer of wrestling, I do remember Chyna from her days with Triple H and Shawn Michaels in DX...

Still can't believe she went into pr0n and then of all things, became an English tutor in Japan recently? Very wild career path this woman has had.
