Yea. There isn’t really any big name athletes that I’d love to watch.

can’t think of any aside from maybe Simone Biles and Katie Ledecky.

Maybe Mattie Rogers for weightlifting.

I am excited to see Lu Xiaojun compete tomorrow thou.
Im the same age as him and it makes me feel unaccomplished

Lu took

watched Mattie Rogers compete last night. Definitely having some anxiety issues. It is her first Olympics. Also the judges overturning her 3rd snatch attempt probably messed with her head.

she did place 6th. interestingly she was competing body weight wise 10kg less than everyone else and only missed a medal by 10kg. Or even 6kg if you counted her 3rd snatch attempt.

If she got that 3rd snatch and got her clean and jerks, she probably had a good chance on at least bronze. But it is what it is.

Also I’m so confused how weight lifting works. How is it some people can finish all their attempts before someone even does their 1st attempt

in powerlifting, it goes by all 1st attempts sorted by attempted weight. Lightest to heaviest. Then moves on to everyone’s 2nd attempt and then 3rd attempts. Also all sorted by weight.

in weight lifting, if you miss a weight and try it again, some of the people had like a minute or so rest before lifting again.

The number always goes up. The lifters' coaches play games to pressure lifters that miss their lift; if 2 people have the same number listed, and the first one misses, the second can opt to add 1 kg, focusing the first one to lift again with minimal rest, or go up in weight

Overall primetime coverage has been shitty -- seemingly random to catch American participation. Streaming coverage on the app and online is excellent though -- good commentary for each sport.

Been watching quite a bit of olympics during my time in mandatory hotel quarantine here in China (basically locked in hotel room for 2 weeks, meals delivered 3 times a day, temp check twice daily, nose swab like twice a week....pretty hardcore here.)

My random thoughts:
China so far has most gold medals..pretty surprising....they did well in some sports that are expected like diving, table tennis (final two dudes were both chinese lol), and some gymnastics events.

Surprisingly China also won gold in sports I didn't expect: one of the women weight lifting, couple of swimming events, a wind surfing event, a team canoe rowing, and team cycling sprint, and one chick was really good at throwing that heavy metal ball thing from the neck/shoulder thing...

Saw the 100m mens sprint final....also surprised a CHinese guy qualified but he didn't run as fast as his heat round. SOme tall italian dude won gold but not nearly as exciting with Bolt retired and with COVID....it usually is one of the most hotly anticipated/participated events but it just seemed anti climactic. Also a british guy got instantly disqualified after he false started....and Ididn't know that if your reaction is less than 0.100 seconds you get warning/disqualifying....apparently some physiology where its not possible for human to react faster than 0.100s....one of them got a yellw warning in one of the qualifying runs.

Koreans are damn good at womens archery, and USA did ok in swimming and gymnastics.
Suni Lee is pretty cool/crazy story with her dad getting paralyzed and her being able to make it to olympic team and winning gold with Biles out. Can't believ trying to juggle high school stuff and then also training for olympics....

Also friend showed me some radio host talking trash on Simone Biles....and after I read up a bit on twisties and gymnasts...anyone who trashes her can suck a cockroach dick - seems like this is a very common phenomenon in gymnasts and other olympians have this happened to them too and basically mind and body gets out of sync...not to mention she was also abused by that doctor too during those horrific years. Dumbass media personalities who doesn't have the slightest clue about gymnastics seems like they are just projecting their own sociopathy onto others....smh....

To be fair, IMO I think calling it “mental health” isn’t really a proper way to describe the twisties.

when people think of mental health, people think of like depression, anxiety, stress, cracking under pressure etc

And China is known to be dominating in weight lifting.

Agreed. It's not the typical mental health issues. The twisties seem like a gymnastic thing that's kinda unique to that sport.

Also didn't know about weight lifting....just probably cause I'm a skinny ass so....my bad...lol...

Totally agree. I'm guessing maybe the media latched on to calling it "mental health", or maybe the Biles camp was just looking for a quick and dirty phrase in the moment because explaining the "twisties" would have been too complicated live in the moment. But after hearing a former gymnast explain it, yeah I'd call it something other than "mental health" the way that phrase is commonly used. If your mind and your muscle memory get out of whack, I can totally see why that's dangerous and I'm not even a gymnast.

Unless something changed Biles is supposed to be on the balance beam. I was shocked she'd pick that one - seems to me that's by far the most dangerous apparatus to be on with the twisties.

The Chinese have been pretty dominant in recent years. Watching them do squat jerks is just magical -- so much precision and mobility needs to go into it

When i first read the story, i was expecting to see The Chinese Cursed at the Korean...

Seriously? For anyone who knows Mandarin - Wo Cao is a pretty polite way to curse... like dang it or oh Snap... and it is not even done at anyone...

I dont know if CNN is exaggerating the Korean's reactions or the Koreans need to take a chill pill.

They better not watch NBA cuz you can find someone say fuck and shit every other sec.

CNN)South Korea's Badminton Korea Association plans to pursue a formal complaint with the World Badminton Federation (WBF) regarding China's Chen Qingchen's cursing during an Olympic match at Tokyo 2020, the organization has told CNN.

Chen, who was heard cursing liberally in the broadcast Olympic matches, has won the hearts of many in her home country, even though the South Korean public has expressed discontent.
The controversy has been extensively reported by South Korean media, prompting widespread — and often critical — commentary.
By contrast, many Chinese people reacted to Chen's outbursts in the highly competitive event with amusement on social media.
Chen, 24, was relatively unknown until a clip of her shouting "wo cao" -- a rough equivalent of "f**k" lit up Chinese social media last week.
She started yelling the common, but impolite phrase incessantly and passionately, seemingly as a way to pick herself up, after she and her partner -- Jia Yifan -- lost the first set to the South Korean players in a women's doubles match.

The Chinese duo then repeated the phrase for every winning point in the rest of the contest, winning the match 2-1 against South Korea's Kim Soyeong and Kong Heeyong on July 27 in a group match.

The Chinese duo also beat the South Korean pair 2-0 in the semifinals.

Chen Qingchen and Jia Yifan of China compete against Greysia Polii and Apriyani Rahayu of Indonesia during the badminton women's doubles gold medal match on day 10 of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
Amid the controversy, Chen acknowledged that some had been offended.
"Actually, it was just self-encouragement for winning points," Chen posted on Weibo. "I will also adjust my pronunciation," she said, seemingly in reference to a slight variation of the word that is perceived to be more family-friendly.

Chen and her partner appeared to use the word cao in subsequent badminton matches. Eventually, they took the silver in the event.
Albeit vulgar by some standards, the phrase similar to "oh sh*t" is casually used to express astonishment or amazement.
Some applauded her genuine approach in a world sporting event, which is a deviation from the image of traditionally taciturn Chinese athletes.
Chen is not the only Chinese athlete using the phase. It is also used regularly by Chinese weightlifting gold medalist Shi Zhiyong in his daily training that his fans are making memes of it.
The WBF did not immediately respond to CNN's request for comment.

@oonowindoo I posted in the 3G BS thread but basically my father had a stroke in April and then died in the ICU back in May and mom and I basically had to submit paperwork from the hospital ICU certifying that he was in a medical emergency (ie, not just in a nursing home or have some chronic condition) as well as marriage and birth certificate documents to the Chicago Chinese consulate as well as massively long and tedius visa application where we had to like document/put in our entire lives before we got the temporary one time entry VIsa. Mom and Iboth have 10 year multi entry Chinese visa but that is suspended right now with COVID. I think they only grant visas to Chinese nationals returning or people who have a Chinese residency status or if there's immediate family member emergency (death, qualified medical event) or some government sanctioned trip.

But yes we also entered China via XIamen cause my hometown is Fuzhou which is close to Xiamen and in the same province. Pretty much most of the flight from LAX to XMN were Chinese nationals and I did see few foreign looking people but they may be living in China and have Chinese residency already. One of the people in line saw our USA passports and were amazed that we got visa with a foreign passport....

DUde.....I should've hit you up to see about getting an upgrade in quarantine hotel....how the fuck did you do that. Also is your boss going for pure business/company reason? Or is he chinese??

We got into the Xiamen airport and man every single airport worker were in FULL hazmat suits, got tested with the full brain tickler swab AND blood draw, and had to fill out more forms stating where our final destination was.

Once we got the luggage and left airport we had to go onto these special COVID buses and we went to this processing center where they grouped us into different rooms depending on where our final destination was (if it was within Xiamen, Fuzhou, other cities, etc.) and then another bus took us Fuzhou people to a city outside of XIamen in Quanzhou to start our mandatory quarantine at a hotel. Then at 11pm on saturday we all got a call saying we need to move to a higher level quarantine facility because someone on our plane tested positive. So we get bussed to this former factory workers' dorm where the room is quite bad (could be worse) and again we got tested and then got blood draw AGAIN. After 1 week we moved back to the nicer hotel in Quanzhou and now I'm finally in Fuzhou for the last week of quarantine before I'm free.

I think they also allow quanratine at home if you have residence in Xiamen. Apparently if you choose to do that they will send a couple of police to follow you home (make sure you don't go anywhere else and then they install some kind of remote monitoring system to make sure you stay inside for 2 weeks. Hardcore AF.

Everyone used the WeChat program for everything in the airport and it doesn't seem like we had any choice of hotel but if you were able to pre-book a nice resort....that would've been so much better.

LOL....I was gona post the same thing too...like I'd nut myself trying to do that balance beam....lololol....
Damn dude.. sorry to hear about your father. It is difficult but it is all part of the cycle of life that is much bigger than all of us. Hope you are feeling OK now.

As far as the Visa, u know the typical business.. u have to know people.

The big boss is Chinese but US citizen and going back for Business. Pretty influential person in the business world in Shanghai. So i am sure that mattered.
He used to fly back every 2 weeks since in the early 90s and he hasnt been back since Dec 2019.
Like u said, it was extremely difficult to get the Visa for non-Chinese Nationals. He got the Mayor of Shanghai to write a letter for him and that was the only way.

Over here, he knows the 2nd highest person in charge at the China Consulate in LA and that helped but he still had to go through the same application process. Yah the one with your great grand father's father's information
They only charged us $5 for the Visa

As far as the hotel, i am not sure about the details since it was his contact in China who pre-arranged everything. I am sure it is still typical business.
But no matter who you are or who you know, EVERYONE needs to be quarantined. NO Exceptions! I give them props on that.

On a related note, all of these Olympic athletes will have to be quarantined i assume. I hope the US will do the same.... But i doubt it...

I think I saw some athletes that retuned quarantined themselves. As to if it was voluntary or mandatory. I have no clue.

also saw that athletes were not allowed to leave the Olympic Village.

@oonowindoo Thank you for your kind words. It's not too bad now and it may hit harder later when we do the funeral stuff but indeed such is life and will just have to cherish the memories.

With regards to your boss.......shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiet. Well damn yup....I know exactly what you mean man when doing things with China. You gotta know people and pull the strings and have the money too of course. Seems like your boss is pretty powerful dude knowing high level people in China and also in the Consulate too....damn that'll definitely get you a much nicer hotel for the 2 week quarantine. I shoulda known there is the VIP level service for when you are rich and/or powerful. One of the dudes on our quarantine group asked if rich people get better service or they can pre-select nicer hotels...and one of the other dudes was like "Dude you know the answer to that already cuz. What do you think?" We were all laughing/crying lol...

With peons like me and the masses...the bus that took us to our initial quarantine hotel was too small to fit everyone's luggage in the underside storage area so we were stacking massive suitcases into the bus itself...like the entire walkway was full of luggage plus any empty seats....let's just say it definitely was not safe of we crashed....everyone would be dead cause there's no way to get out. And then on our last bus transfer from Xiamen area to Fuzhou....the bus broke down cause the hydraulic system that operates the bus doors lost air pressure and so we had to stop and the driver and some dudes had to find some rope and jerry-rigged the bus doors closed so we can keep going. And when we had to move to the higher level facility for 1 week in Xiamen we got piled into these minivans and the vans didn't have AC...and we had to wear these paper suits and hoods...and for 30min there was no AC in massive humidity in southern China....people were sweating like pigs.....LOL.Chinese things.

If you're a VIP level like your boss....aint' no way he's gonna experience any of thsoe things. Probably gets private car transfer from airport straight to the resort. But good to know they quarantine everyone no matter what. Just depends on how nice the hotel is when you do your quarantine.

But yeah all these olympians need to be quarantined for 2 weeks after they come back from Japan....just a degree of how strict each country is. USA will recommend it strongly but in all honesty who the fuck keeps track of that.

China does it super hardcore (which many americans will find not tolerable)because they actually send cops to follow people home if they choose home quarantine to make sure you actually quarantine at home....

Yeah if the athletes are smart they would quarantine themselves...and I guess every country has their own rules....USA is pretty much free for all lol....but yeah the chinese atheltes who come back are definitely going to get locked down for 2 weeks after they come back.

Yeah Iread that the olympic village is supposed to be a separate area and basically they tried to separate the Japan society in general from all the athletes due to obvious reasons. Who knows how well that's going.

I saw something on reddit where some japanese chick was on tinder or the Japanese equivalent dating app and saw bunch of olympic people (foreigners, either atheletes and/or staff for the teams) already getting on the japanese dating app trying to score some Japanese ass. LOL And then I saw some group of athletes got in trouble for throwing some alcohol-fueled party in the village....

I'm guessing there's probably less mixing between the olympians and the host city people this time around....but I'm sure there plenty of "cultura experiences" that occured on both sides...lol

The prime time coverage still hasn't redeemed itself in my opinion - I swear 40% of the air time has been devoted to sand volleyball. Maybe for obvious reasons , but seems way out of proportion. In contrast I haven't seen barely any soccer or basketball. Swimming and track have been OK coverage though.

That little Chinese diver Quan Hongchan is really something. 14 years old and she wins gold. As good as she is this young, you wonder how may years/decades she's going to dominate that sport. Hard to beat perfect scores.

Yah dude.. without hijacking this thread too much:

Yah that is the same for every country everywhere.. because human.. the rich and powerful will also get better treatment... That is the same in China, in Africa, in Japan or in the US.
He is in the hotel now. He told me that everything was super smooth.. he was in and out within 40 mins. But yah he still has to go through he same #s of testing, quarantine and rules like everyone else. Just the overall experience will be very different

From all the Youtube vlogs that i have watched recently from people who came back from Italy.... US custom does NOT even check your negative testing result even tho it is supposed to be required. They care more about if you have some meat product in your bag than if you have COVID...
So i dont expect any kind of restriction when the US athletes come back...

Yup yup....basically more money/power = better treatment = everywhere in the world...that has become more and more apparent as I got older/more life experiences. Well such is life indeed in this world.

Dang lol....well not surprised....US entry will be vastly different than China entry....I was half thinking about taking a photo of all the airport workers in full hazmat suit but figured the risk isn't worth the one time photo opportunity. I also actually have GLobal Entry so that should hopefully speed things up. I'm supposed to get a negative test within 3 days of leaving China so hopefully that'll be smooth. I have extremely low concern for getting into USA vs getting into China...lol....

So USA wins mens basketball gold....no surprise....the team didn't even have all the best players....basically KD was the star....you probably can field a whole team of B+ tier players and still win gold....US is just way too good at basketball....winning the NBA Finals is way more important than olympic gold lol....
