Despite a massive Los Angeles police presence Thursday night, sporadic violence broke out near Staples Center after the Lakers defeated the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals.

Crowds hurled bottles and other objects at police, smashed marquees, jumped on vehicles, broke windows and lighted a small fire in the road along Figueroa Street north of Staples Center. Police fired non-lethal rounds to disperse the crowd at Figueroa and Venice Boulevard after several small fires were set, as well as at 11th and Hope streets. At 7th and Flower, a car believed to be a taxicab was engulfed in flames.

At least one person was beaten unconscious as fights broke out on Flower Street near Olympic Boulevard. A bicyclist was injured when struck by a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department vehicle near 11th and Flower streets, according to the LAPD. In all, there were multiple injuries, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department, but no loss of life.

The LAPD declared an unlawful assembly moments after the game ended.

Hundreds of officers in patrol cars, on foot and on horseback moved in to clear streets and break up the crowds. At least nine people were arrested on suspicion of being drunk in public and inciting a riot, police said. Several dozen people rushed onto the 10 Freeway near Figueroa and Washington boulevards, disrupting traffic, the California Highway Patrol said.

At 8th and Figueroa, Lakers fans and a phalanx of more than two dozen police, wearing riot gear and wielding batons, faced off. The stand-off began when a bunch of fans tore down a traffic sign and then ripped out two newspaper stands and lighted the papers on fire. When the police marched up Figueroa, about two dozen abreast, the crowd slowly receded. Some people were throwing energy drinks, which had been passed out for free after the win. Others posed for photos in front of the line of police.

A group of overzealous fans began smashing the windows of a black Honda and trying to turn it over. Others protested the violence: "You isn't from L.A.! This is L.A. No burning!" one person in a Kobe Bryant jersey shouted.

In 2000, the LAPD was criticized after mayhem erupted following the Lakers' championship victory. Roaming mobs torched vehicles and looted and vandalized businesses near Staples Center with seeming impunity. At times, police stood back as young men — many in Lakers jerseys — threw trash cans and road-construction barricades through windows and set fire to vehicles, including two LAPD patrol cars.

The department fared better after last year's championship but still needed a few hours to gain control of rowdy fans. Top LAPD officials had vowed to do things differently this year and relied, in part, on a strategy of keeping large groups from roaming the area around Staples Center.

As the Lakers battled the Celtics in the first half, crowds began to form at the Nokia Theatre plaza across from Staples Center. Witnesses said the LAPD was quick to respond when the throng began to grow.

A black-and-white police cruiser drove through the middle of the plaza, splitting the crowd as officers on foot began to move people from the area, according to diners at nearby restaurants.

"It was controlled chaos. They blocked them and pinched them so everyone had to leave out the same side," said John Hall of Bakersfield, who watched the scene unfold from the ESPN Zone. "People were not happy, but LAPD did a nice job."

With the plaza area cleared, officers shut down Figueroa Street at Olympic Boulevard to pedestrian traffic. About 100 people gathered at the corner after they were stopped from heading south toward Staples Center.

Some of them crowded the window at La Bella Covina restaurant, trying to watch the game on a television inside. "Defense!" some shouted.

Police patrol cars lined Chick Hearn Plaza. Two trucks of police in riot gear and another group of officers on horseback lined up along Figueroa and Olympic as people assembled nearby.

Meanwhile, inspectors with the Los Angeles Fire Department were checking bars to ensure they had not exceeded maximum capacity. At Riordan's Tavern on Figueroa, waiters announced that fire inspectors had ordered the bar to be cleared.

A patron smashed a bottle at the front entrance, sending broken glass flying as he walked outside.

"Lets go to L.A. Live!" a woman shouted on her way out as people began to head south toward the game. But they never got there. They were stopped by LAPD officers on Olympic Boulevard.
just like last year..

And one up on Duncan. And hes tied with Magic.

The "Kobe vs. Jordan" comparison will always be there, no matter if he even gets 8 rings. IMO MJ was better but Kobe has to come second as the best clutch performers of all time. And he has to go down as 1 of the 10 greatest players of all time. If you dont put him in the top ten that just means your ignorant and hating on Kobe cuz hes Kobe

yup! Only the true boston fans were there before the big 3 showed up. Ohh and if I remember correctly, it was those fans chanting mvp for kobe!

I understand how you can't like the lakers, but how the hell do you like boston more!

admittedly I took many years off from the Celtics, you can only watch your team eat a dick year after year for so long. HOWEVER, I've hated the lakers since it was Bird V Johnson

From the 80's until 2003, I was a HUGE Laker hater. I have always hated the "showtime" Lakers with Magic, Worthy, and Kareem, and back then my favorite teams were Boston and Chicago. The only time during that time when I temporarily stopped being a Laker hater was when Shaq/Kobe were going for their first ring against Indiana. After that I became a Laker hater again. After the Lakers got lucky and got the referee assist in the playoffs and beat Sacramento I just stopped watching Basketball altogether.

Since then my hate for the Lakers has died down and really I don't have a favorite team anymore. The only team I can say I don't like now is the Spurs and while I hated to admit it, I was happy when the Lakers beat them in the playoffs with that D. Fisher shot a few years ago.

But in reality the only NBA teams I can say I ever was a fan of were the Bulls and Celtics in the 80's and 90's. I sometimes have teams I root for during particular games today, but for the most part I just watch. I had really lost interest in the NBA after Jordan left and just started back watching a few years ago.

Today I really don't have a favorite NBA team. I just have favorite players, and I want all of my favorite players to get rings at some point in their careers. Garnett, Pierce, Allen, Wade, Shaq, and Kobe have at least one, and I'm also glad Artest got one. Now if only James and Nash can get one...

itll always be there...jordan has 6 rings with 6 mvps. kobe has 5 rings and 2 mvps. jordan has shot 54% for a season before. kobe hasnt come close.
jordan elevated the play of others around him and kobe never has. i will say kobe is top 10 of all time to ever play the game but all this better than or as good as jordan is all crap.

Also Jordan is a perfect 6 - 0 in the finals. It's impossible for Kobe to have a perfect NBA Finals record. Even IF Kobe gets 6 there will always be those two loses to Detroit and Boston. Had Jordan not retired, I really believe the Bulls would have 8 straight titles; Jordan has also averaged at least 20 pts/game in all of his NBA seasons (even with Washington).

I will say Kobe is the absolute closest to Jordan and probably the only player today that can even be mentioned with MJ. I don't think I'll have any problem putting him in the top 10 of all time (top 15 for sure). He is also a first ballot Hall of Famer - but to me Jordan is still the best.

Good series. Not to take anything away from the Lakers, but I think Home court is what decided it. Nice to see a team rewarded for the long regular season grind.

Very well could be....on the flip side of the lakers playing to win home court, Doc Rivers also took his foot off the pedal so that his guys could rest. Against Orlando and Cleveland, it looked like it wasn't going to bite them, but it did so against LA.

agree with what's been said here about Kobe/MJ. Aside from the stats and diferent rules now, face it his first 3 rings where because of Shaq. I know a lot Laker fans can't see that, and hate on Shaq now which is sad cause Shaq brought the Lake back. But I have no doubt that Kobe is probably is one of the top 5 players ever, and will finish a very close 2 to MJ. Ultimately with these debates, what's lost is the the top 5 players of all time are probably so close in their differences that on any given game of 21, 1 could beat the other when their on their game.

Best part? Scal makes 3 mil a year, and since 2007 he hasnt played more than 513 minutes a season

frankly, the national media cares more about the MJ vs. Kobe thing. As a Laker fan, I care more about Magic or Kobe at this point. For me, its still Magic or West, but so long as Kobe doesn't have to retire due to the HIV, he has a long time to put himself above the Laker legends.

Scal called into the radio station he does weekely calls with this morning, 3:30 PST obviously half drunk. And gave a really good 20-25 minute eulogy for the season. Due to his affiliation with the popular morning show he has a pretty decent following, he received 250,000 all star votes....mainly because they had a bet with him that if they could get him to 250k he would come back from the all star break with a spray tan

I gotta say though, hes a real down to earth good guy that usually plays the shit out of the minutes that he gets

I agree with everything u said. But most people forget or are not aware that when MJ came back in 95 they got eliminated by the Magic in 6 games.
