NBA: 2008 Season Thread
#443
I finally have another game tomorrow vs.Memphis, 22 days is the longest stretch of time this season that I have without one, but I do get to taunt and boo Miles out of the building tomorrow night. Ill be surprised if they don't have to calm down the crowd if he actually goes in.

^^another against clips on Wednesday. Randolph is probably out for throwing a 'bow at Amundson in the first quarter. Good times, lol.
Then the Suns play the Thunder with newly acquired Tyson Chander. Interesting week or 2 for the Suns.

Chicago Bulls acquire Brad Miller, and John Salmons from the Kings for Andres Nocioni, Drew Gooden, Cedric Simmons, and Michael Ruffin. The Kings then traded Ruffin for Iko Diogu from the Blazers.

Meh on the trade...Miller is good when he's a team's 3rd best player. Problem is, Da Bulls have no one after Rose.

Chicago Bulls
Projected 8-man rotation (with salary and years left)
PG: Derrick Rose (5 mil, 2 years)
SG: Ben Gordon (6.5 mil, 1 year)
SF: Luol Deng (9.5 mil, 6 years)
PF: Tyrus Thomas (3.5 mil, 2 years)
C: Brad Miller (11.5 mil, 2 years)
G Kirk Hinrich (10 mil, 4 years), G/F John Salmons (6 mil, 3 years), C Joakim Noah (2 mil, 2 years)
Notable: Larry Hughes (12.5 mil, 2 years)
I'm assuming Gordon starts, considering Salmons new to the system.
Short-term impact
Chicago gets a solid interior big man that can score, rebound, and pass. While Gooden's on the same level as a player, Miller's also 3 inches taller and fills a bigger need at center than Gooden at forward. This won't make a huge impact on the Bulls, but it makes them stronger in their weakest area. They're adequate inside now.
Salmons is versatile and scores well. At 6'7" he provides a lot more size than Gordon in the backcourt, which should help out on defense. He can play with Gordon and a point as a 3, or at the 2 with Deng at the 3 and Rose/Hinrich at point. Larry Hughes hasn't panned out, so Salmons fills a need here on the perimeter.
I don't see this trade having a big effect right now; Miller/Salmons isn't a huge upgrade over Nocioni and Gooden, though both are definitely better fits for Chicago. They could win a few more games with these two guys, but they're getting more out of the deal long-term.
Long-term impact
Luol Deng (6), John Salmons (3), and Kirk Hinrich (4) are now the only players on the Bulls whose contracts extend past two years (unlesss some young guys have options, which I expect they do), which adds up to about $25 million combined, around $30 mil if you add some options. I believe that puts them about $30 million under the cap, if the cap's going to be around 60 mil in 2010.
If this is the case, Chicago will have the opportunity to get a high-profile free agent in the summer of 2010 along with bringing back Thomas/Noah (if their contracts run out by 2010, they'll need to be re-signed; if not, they can have their options excercized for a few mil apiece). Getting a superstar next to Rose is important, and Chicago has a good shot of doing so.
The Bulls have two things that will work for them in free agency: a talented young core of players, and a strong history that will be sure to attract FA's over other market players like, say, the Kings (just using them as an example; don't know if they'll have the room but I assume they will). Most big time players aren't going to go to a team like Sacramento or Memphis, so Chicago's got that going for them with the whole 90s dynasty. Other teams like New York and New Jersey won't have a talented nucleus in place like the Bulls will with Rose, Deng, maybe Hinrich and Thomas if they stick, count Noah as a solid role player.
Overall
The Bulls have accomplished a tough thing: improving their team in the short term, while also being able to contend in free agency in the long-term. Good deal for them.
* I think they should work on trading Hinrich for some extra cap room, maybe a pick? That'd make it easier for free agency in 2010, assuring them they could bring back Thomas and Noah and still sign a top-tier free agent. Collins/Cardinal from Minny is a rumor I heard earlier.

All that talk and the blazers did nothing. Word at the game last night was that we made a pretty big offer for Gerald Wallace and it was rejected. I think that is the trade we wanted to make and because we didn't get it, we just decided to do nothing. I'm not sure how I feel about it either way. At this point its like fuck it, let the cake bake this year and if we can end up in the top 4 in the west with home court, maybe not making a trade was a much better idea, if not then wait for 2010 and go after another all star with the rest of the league.
On another note I had quite a good time booing Darius last night with the rest of the RG. When Kobe comes we boo him, but nothing like the relentless taunts and boos Darius got last night. He did not have a friend in that entire arena, I can assure everyone that much.

The Blazers are still attempting to come up with a trade package for Gerald Wallace after the Bobcats turned down an preliminary Raef LaFrentz for Wallace offer earlier Wednesday. The Bobcats are attempting to entice the Blazers to take back Nazr Mohammed or include Nicolas Batum into a deal.
http://realgm.com/src_wiretap_archiv...r_for_wallace/
it's too bad
a lineup of
rudy
roy
wallace
lamarcus
oden
would murder, even down the road.
now all i am worried about is that if odom will continue his "contract year" play when bynum comes back. i hope he can do it from the bench.

I deal Batum straight up, I don't know why they wouldn't make that offer work. Wallace was the right player for the spot we are trying to fill and Batum is an unkown player for the most part.

amar'e is said to be out for up to 8 weeks following eye surgery. As a clipper fan, I have to apologize......
I really wanted to see the suns get back to their old ways, and now it might be a little wait.
in other news, jason williams filed for reinstatement. I don't know why he waited until just after the trade deadline, unless he really wants to play for the clips . I was saying it would've been a perfect fit for orlando when JN went down, since that's where his family is, and that's why he retired. Maybe the clips can waive alex acker if white chocolate wants to come play for a losing team...

So, in light of all of these trades made by the Bulls, I can't help but wonder if 2010 is going to be a repeat of that dark year when all the stud free agents then (i.e. McGrady et al) spurned Chicago...?
#474
Couple of franchises might be on the move too.
#475
hopefully the clippers
but to where?
there are not that many markets that can support an nba team.
seattle comes to mind, but not after the breakup of the sonics. its either sonics or nothing in my eyes.

sterling has always said he's not even considering moving the clips. Especially now that they just finished their brand new training facility on the west side.
I think the Kings are the most likely to move. I've heard the maloofs want to move to vegas, but vegas doesn't want to invest in a facility or something, and there are questions if they are a big enough market to support a team. But the maloofs are supposedly hurting, and arco arena is supposed to be aging with no plans of any renovation. I think there are rumors that san diego or anaheim might be a place for the kings, but I can't imagine 3 nba teams in socal.
