I just watched the play on Baseball Tonight. He was so out it is insane. I cannot believe they did not use replay for that.

I can't believe how well he took losing his perfect.

 

Not sure if replay is allowed for force out calls. I thought it was only HR/Foul calls.

 

MLB/Selig needs to do the right thing and change the call to an out and award Galaraga a perfect game

 

Yeah, replay can't be used in instances like this. I'm just wondering if the second base umpire had a decent angle on it. Talk about a history ending call.

 

I disagree. That would be opening Pandora's Box. Do you know how many 1 hit games that may or may not have been a no-hitter based on a judgment call? I don't. And don't really care to find out (although I'm sure Congress will spend millions going through thousands of games to see if there is some sort of conspiracy).

I get that it was the last out, and the subsequent at bat had no bearing on the outcome of the game; but, I don't think it should be changed. If anything, it should be the hallmark catalyst to bring replay in on judgment calls. I don't mean balls and strikes; but, everyone saw the replay except for the most important person on the field, the ump that blew the call.

 

Whats done is done. Really really sucks though. Like Jas said, this will haunt Joyce for the rest of his career. And wth is up with all the Yankee talk. :thumbsdow

 

Agreed.

Yankee haters continuously call us out, when we are vociferous they complain, when we are not they comment.

FWIW, they are the second best team in Baseball at this moment, #3 is 19 points behind.

 

I hate the Yankees and i'll leave it at that because i've been dealing with Yankee "fans" and their extraordinary arrogance since becoming a baseball fan decades ago. Case in point see first few posts of page 1 of this thread.

I was considering whether I want them to change it, and I've decided yes. It wouldn't matter to Galarraga, but the ump knows he made the wrong call, it was at the end of the game...you'll never get that moment back, but at least it will right an egregious wrong.

Fay Vincent took 50 no-hitters off the books, I think we can make room in the record book for perfecto veintiuno.

they need to implement a system similar to tennis.

managers get to challenge any call via replay 3 times a game and after that, the calls stay. and batters on each team combined could call 9 time outs totalled or something.. it's a team game afterall.

I hate how a lot batters takes their sweet ass time adjusting their gloves, shirt, whatever when they havent even swing their bat.

i know cutting down the duration of the game time is very important, but the integrity of the game has to stay in place as well.. 21st perfect game in history, ruined by a very bad call..

NEW YORK -- Major League Baseball was still deciding Thursday morning whether to review the umpire's blown call that cost Armando Galarraga a perfect game.

Commissioner Bud Selig has the power to reverse umpire Jim Joyce's missed call that came with two outs in the ninth inning Wednesday night in Detroit. Joyce ruled Cleveland's Jason Donald safe, then admitted he got it wrong and tearfully apologized in person to the pitcher.

Joyce showed up to work Thursday in Detroit, looking as if he hadn't slept. He appreciated the outpouring of support from umpires, family and friends but lamented strangers lashing out at his wife and children.

"I wish my family was out of this," Joyce said, holding back tears as he spoke nearly two hours before the Cleveland Indians-Detroit Tigers series finale. "I wish they would direct it all to me. It's a big problem. My wife is a rock. My kids are very strong. They don't deserve this."

Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said the team will not ask MLB to overturn the call. Selig would likely consult with his top advisers before making such a ruling. St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa says the call should be overturned.

Tigers manager Jim Leyland said MLB gave Joyce the option to not work Thursday's game, but Joyce chose to stick with his job behind the plate. Leyland added that Galarraga would present the lineup card and shake hands with Joyce at home plate before the afternoon game.

Milt Pappas, who lost a perfect game in 1972 on a controversial call and settled for a no-hitter instead, told ESPN's Willie Weinbaum that he thinks the blown call that cost Galarraga a perfect game should be reversed.

Pappas lost his perfect game on a two-out, ninth-inning walk that he believes should have been called a game-ending third strike. He supports instant replay in baseball, but not for balls and strikes.

"I think it should be reversed and the kid should get a perfect game, especially after the umpire said he blew it," Pappas said. "Since the ump admitted he was wrong, which seldom happens, the commissioner should rectify it. I hope [Bud] Selig has the guts to do it. I feel sorry for the young man. At least the umpire had the guts to say he was wrong."

 

That is true. Home runs only.

However, if I were the crew chief, and I saw that there was some issue, I would stop the game, get Selig on the phone and get his to make a decision on using replay. I would not have continued the game if there was some doubt. Not with 26 straight outs. I know it opens the door for other complaints, but so be it.

When anyone asks me what baseball team I root for, I tell that that the most accurate answer is that I root against the Yankees. For Halloween, I dressed as “anybody but the Yankees,” donning a Red Sox shirt, Phillies jacket and Dodgers hat. The Yankees got the last laugh that night, beating the Phillies 8-5 to win game three of the World Series.
The origins of my Yankee-hatred are complicated, involving rooting for the Braves in the ’90s, watching them lose the World Series to the Yankees twice and having a dad who has been an Orioles fan since his days at Johns Hopkins in the ’80s...

Anyways, reversing the call is the right thing to do.

 

Even if they reverse the call...it will only put Galarraga in the record books. He still won't have the feeling of finishing the game in that fashion with his teammates. And I think that's more important than anything.

I say just leave it as it is...Galarraga handled it very well, and what's done is done. Also, agree with it opening Pandora's box.

 

Fun fact: Celtics have won 17 championships since 1946. That's 27% of the time they win it. Yankees have won 27 since 1903 (when they moved from Baltimore) at 25% of winning it. I believe the Yanks have to win the WS this year and next year and the Celtics not winning it to surpass the Celtics in champions/years of existence percentage.

For the record....I am not a Yankee Hater. I just don't care about them. I don't care that they spend the most money, that they have great players, that they won 27 titles. I also don't care that they have probably the highest number of players that tested positive for PEDs and lie about it, or that my "sucky" METS beat them 2 out of 3. I just don't care. I think the 20-30 crap posts arguing about the supremacy of the Yanks is a waste of this thread.

Im happy the Tigers are being good sports about it. I feel bad for Joyce. Unlike other umps that blow a call and insist they made the right choice, he saw the replay and came out immediately saying he was wrong.

"While the human element has always been an integral part of baseball, it is vital that mistakes on the field be addressed," Selig said in a statement. "Given last night's call and other recent events, I will examine our umpiring system, the expanded use of instant replay and all other related features."

Selig said he would consult with baseball's labor unions and the game's special committee for on-field matters before announcing any decisions.

Selig also praised umpire Jim Joyce, whose blown call in the bottom of the ninth cost Galarraga the perfect game, for his handling of the situation afterwards, as well as Galarraga and Tigers manager Jim Leyland.

"The dignity and class of the entire Detroit Tigers organization under such circumstances were truly admirable and embodied good sportsmanship of the highest order," Selig said. "[Galarraga] and Detroit manager Jim Leyland are to be commended for their handling of a very difficult situation.

"I also applaud the courage of umpire Jim Joyce to address this unfortunate situation honestly and directly. Jim's candor illustrates why he has earned the respect of on-field personnel throughout his accomplished career in the Major Leagues since 1989," Selig said.

Joyce admitted missing a call at first base Wednesday night on what would've been the final out, ruling Cleveland's Jason Donald beat a throw to the bag. The veteran ump personally apologized to Galarraga after the game and hugged him.

"It was the biggest call of my career, and I kicked the [stuff] out of it," Joyce said Wednesday night, looking and sounding distraught as he paced in the umpires' locker room. "I just cost that kid a perfect game."

Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said the team will not ask MLB to overturn the call. St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa says the call should be overturned.

Thursday, a visibly upset Joyce wiped away tears as he took the field for the Tigers' series finale against the Cleveland Indians. He and Galarraga met at home plate as the pitcher presented the umpire with the Tigers' lineup card. Joyce shook hands with Galarraga and patted him on the shoulder.

Im not going to argue with them, its pointless. They like their teams, I like mine.

And the reason they usually hate the Yankees probably cant be explained. I am a Jets fan, I hate the Patriots (Dolphins too). Up until a few years ago, I didnt know why. Now I have an excuse (Belicheck is a cheater), but up until that point, there really was no reason. I just hated them the most.



And Im happy Selig isn't overturning it. Im also happy that he will "look into" expanding replays. We really need to be able to review close calls. Its amazing that it took this long, even after the sloppy Umpiring in last years playoffs.
