Chargers hire Norv Turner as head coach

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Norv Turner is getting his third shot at an NFL head coaching job.

He's been hired by the San Diego Chargers a week after the surprise firing of Marty Schottenheimer.

Turner, the San Francisco 49ers' offensive co-ordinator, was the only one of the six candidates who's been an NFL head coach, and the only one who didn't work on the defensive side of the ball.

He was fired by the Raiders in 2005 after going 9-23 in two seasons.

Turner was 58-82-1 in head coaching stints with Washington and Oakland. He takes over a team that was an NFL-best 14-2 but melted down in losing its playoff opener.

Schottenheimer was fired last Monday by team president Dean Spanos, who cited a ``dysfunctional situation'' between the coach and general manager A.J. Smith.

The team planned to introduce Turner at an afternoon news conference.

I don't think this guy has what it takes to be a head coach. I guess we'll see once again.

Norv will be nothing more than an offensive coordinator, Ted Cotrell will handle the defense. The chargers will have pretty much the same offense and defense, except they wont have Marty overseeing them, but they will be paying him. Screwy.

not the most glamorous signing, but who else is available that has coaching experience?

you can't turn a 14-2 team to a rookie coach. plus, as stated before, he won't be running the defense. and turner knows this offense...aren't they pretty much running the offense that he designed?

i do feel bad for chargers fans. you lose your coaching core after a 14-2 season...

definitely have to agree... He isn't fit to be a coach in the NFL, only a coordinator at most...

Chargers 2006: 14-2
2007 Prediction: 10-6 ... it'll be all thanks to LT...
