Are athletes important?

Take the case of Tiger Woods. Generally, a good guy. However, he's arrogant as hell. Why? Because he's very, very good at swinging a stick, hitting a ball, and putting it close to a very small hole located in a very large area.

What Tiger Woods has chosen to spend his life on, and be completely arrogant about, is arguably silly and doesn't do the planet or anyone on it much good.

So, is Tiger Woods, or any athlete important?

Are they important, I guess it depends. Important to the sport yes, important in general, no.

No more important than your average joe.
They are like entertainers/musicians/actors....they entertain the masses with their talent....nothing more.

Before mass communication, the majority of these so called stars would be unemployed or digging ditches

I've seen him get snippy with reporters and fans, as many athletes do. It pisses me off because those reporters and fans are people that care about what he's doing. Without them, he's just swinging some stupid stick and hitting a little ball. What he's dedicated his life to is fucking inane in the grand scheme.

He should be kissing their feet. They represent the fine line that separates him being a highly paid superstar hailed almost as a god from him being a almost a complete waste of space.

Voted yes. I think people look up to most athletes regardless of whether they are athletic themselves. Do I look up to their personality? No. But I do admire their determination and hard work.

He either doesn't have a sister or dated her himself.

Disagree. I thought stevens' question was more along the lines are athletes really that worthy of the worship and adoration dumped upon them...

Sure, many of the star athletes are very good at what they do. But, does equate to deserving that magnitude of salary and at times, bad attitude? What makes them THAT much more important than say a very good vet? A dedicated hygienist? Teacher?
