They mentioned the opening ceremony cost $300 million. 10x what Greece spent in 2004. And China spent $40 billion to prepare for the Olympics over the last 7 years. Just crazy. . .

That 500 foot wide LED screen was amazing. I don't think I've ever asked "How'd they do that?" so often in any venue like that.

I saw the drum count down part and the lighting of the torch. It looked like for a split second he was about to fall, but other than that him running across the wall while the scroll was unrolling under him was amazing. I'm sure it looked even more amazing in person since they probably couldn't see the cords holding him up.

My favorite part was the footsteps of fireworks. I loved the fly by shots that followed them over the town.

BEIJING, China (CNN) -- A Chinese attacker stabbed two Americans, killing the man and wounding the woman, who were attending the Olympic Games on Saturday, according to the U.S. Olympic Committee.

Chinese police respond to the stabbings at the Drum Tower in Beijing on Saturday. An American man died.

The man also injured a female Chinese tour guide before leaping to his death around noon from the second floor of the Drum Tower, a popular Beijing tourist site, the official Chinese news agency Xinhua reported.

The USOC said the two Americans were family members of a coach for the U.S. men's indoor volleyball team. No other information about them was released.

The attacker was a 47-year-old man from the eastern Chinese city Hangzhou, a spokesman for the Beijing Municipal Government Information Office told Xinhua.

A White House spokesman said President Bush, who is attending Olympic events Saturday, was told about the attack against the Americans.

The U.S. Embassy and the White House have offered the victims' families whatever assistance is needed, the spokesman said.

The ancient Drum Tower in Beijing, and the nearby Bell Tower, are popular tourist sites. Both sites told the time in the capital city, with the bell rung in the morning and drum beaten in the evening, throughout the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties.

Try walking at 6 miles per hour sometime. And walking means at no point are both
feet ever off the ground. It's brutal. And the medalists walk at something close
to 10 MPH.

Frank, I can dig that it's a difficult activity to compete in, but it's still hard to think of walking as a sport. It was mentioned earlier in the thread, but I think a lot of the so-called Olympic "sports" could be eliminated.

Yeah, you knew given all the things China has to overcome as far as world perception of their human rights violations that they'd go over the top for this Olympics. Doesn't change the fact that it's an oppressive country and government. The U.S. State Department is warning all U.S. travelers to Beijing to have "no reasonable expectation of privacy" while there.

I've always considered something a sport if it requires extended aerobic activity or extreme physical contact.

By my definition of sport, speed walking would be a sport. Baseball still doesn't qualify (that's why it's America's favorite past time, it's not really a sport, it just passes the time) neither does Golf.

That said, I'd still rather watch a baseball game than a speed walking competition.

No disagreement there. I did an orienteering event which was a lot of fun, and I then read that they were trying to make it an olympic event, and I went 'HUH?'

Another dumb thing about speed walking - it just looks REALLY goofy - they do this big pelvic thing to pull the legs forward when they walk, which just looks really unnatural.

It's really weird to see some of the Chinese basketball players tower over the US team.

Dah! Dwight Howard just got rejected! Also the netcast looks and runs quite well from NBCOlympics...
