Best route SF to LA?

I heard that somewhere on i5 near bakersfield has a single-lane that is roughly 2 hours long. What routes do you guys take?

look at the i5 just to the left of bakersfield.

assuming that we're leaving at 3 AM, i'll probably get here at around 8 AM. would there be tons of traffic?

5 is quickest. Traffic should be pretty minimal at 3AM.

get on 99. Best known "not so secret" route. More lanes and less cops than the 5.

i got a bullshit speeding ticket last year; I literally got on the highway for 10 seconds. I touched 80 without knowing because I was too busy paying attention to the road as I was trying to cut to the carpool lane. With this, I simply cannot get another ticket because I don't want a point on my record.

Is going 70 MPH the whole time ok? I'm only planning on going at most 5 MPH over the limit. I am also staying away from the left lane.

I am also going to painter's tape my entire front to help with the bugs and rock chips.

Thanks Luster, I'll consider the 99.

You can stay at 75 the whole time and still be regulated to the slow lane..........that is until you hit LA traffic. Then prepare for 2mph and craziness like one time, I remember everyone came to a grinding halt except this guy who braked so hard in his non abs car and went spinning across 3 highway lanes onto the emergency lane. thankfully not taking out everyone on his way there. Watched it all from my rearview mirror....... not fun (at the time).

well 99 merges into the 5/405 once you enter LA, so in the end, you will end up driving on it.

99 is fine. Lots more to see while driving than the 5 and also more lanes and less 18 wheelers. And smells less bad.
