Fun with sandpaper...

I sanded off the oxidation on my headlights today. I really like the outcome. They are like new again.

I also painted my grill again.

well its not actually oxidation but it gets on there with age. its like, the air or something that does that. you've never seen that on headlights? might have something to do with the salt in the air or something, i dont remember.

Thanks for the comment's.
1st. 1500 grit- 10 minutes wet sanding
2nd. 2000 grit- 20 minutes wet sanding
(after the sanding you wont be able to see through the light at all, so dont worry)
3rd. 3M rubbing compound (rub it in hard, or use a buffer)
4th. Meg's Polish
5th. Meg's carnuba wax

You could start with 1000, 1500, then 2000 grit if the headlights have severe scratches or haze.

When I said oxidation I ment a haze that can be seen and felt.

Nah, I used the polish used in the Meg's 3 step wax system. Got it at Pep boy's.

Here is the DIY Its the gutter guard mesh from Home Depot. The only advice I have is: use many coats of paint and clear coat.

Damn, I have a 99 TL and my headlights still look like new. Yours look way too old for a 2000.

And you live in CA too...nothing but sunshine year round. I live in the northeast with all the snow, sand, salt, etc...So if anything my headlight should've looked like yours and vice versa.

Is that rubbing and polish parmanent after sanding?.....I just want to make sure I don't make the lens worse than how it is now after following the DIY once the polish comes off from rain/snow etc....can someone confirm?

yes, after all the wetsanding, and the polish/wax it will keep it on there for a while, if anything dont use nuba wax, use a silicone based wax, ie. nxt 2.0, last longer or else u gotta keep rewaxing it

I know this is and old thread, just wondering if a flame polish would be better than using a silicone based product.

I have access to a hydrogen torch that is used in flame polishing acrylic for sign work..

anybody out there have any thoughts or just about how long this clean up lasted?

Thanks

A lot of the info. is good in how to get the lenses clear but makes no mention of the steps that continue to protect the lens from hazing again.

The hazing is most commonly formed by years of UV damage.

I did the wetsanding myself...worked great!

Your best bet is to buy a "headlight restoration kit."

It's one of the easiest ways to get all the pieces and also the UV sealant in a few ounces without having to purchase larger quantities...

Just my

Our vendor Excel Detail sells a kit if you are interested.

You can ask him about it in the Wash/Wax Forums.
