laptop suggestions
i cut it down to either getting a toshiba m45 or m50, or a dell inspiron 6000. I want to spend maybe about $1500 tops. I like the toshiba TruBrite screens, and they are thin and sleek as well. As for dell, i don't believe i've seen a dell screen as good as toshiba's and the 6000 isn't as sleek and light either. But i've heard that toshiba's customer service really sucks when you need to send your laptop to get fixed. With dell, it seems like its really good. Performancee wise and specs are about the same with either brand for $1500. What are your opinions, thoughts, reviews, for these 2 brands?
If you play your Dell cards right, you can get that $1500 laptop for $1000 or less. My Dell 700m isn't as pretty as the Sony S series I wanted, but I got almost the same thing for less than half the price, and got an extra extended batter for a third of the Sony one. Just couldn't justify the Sony then.
Dell = so cheap you can't turn them away. It may not be as sleek as your buddy's or whatever but at these prices in a year or two when the next guy's is getting old, you can afford to sell yours and get a new one.

At the time when I was searching for a laptop, I stumbled upon Gateway's line... They offered more than Dell at the same price. Has worked out since.
I really like the new Gateway tablet they have. Checked it out in person and the magnesium casing and durability factor is a definite plus...
OTOH, the dell 600 or 700m are great choices in laptop. Just make sure you get an UltraBrite screen... WXSVGA or WUXSVGA... or some crap like that

I don't think Dell makes the absolute best computer, but for the money you spend on them - they def CAN NOT be beat now!
This is what I just ordered for $1169:

It's refurbed, but I also bought a 3yr pickup and return extended warranty for $195
This mother is LOADED!

when i was buying my laptop the past summer, i had narrowed it down to three
dell - for their prices
asus - cause their cases are pretty awesome
apple - cause it's an apple
in the end, i'm personally very happy i went w/ an apple (12" ibook). it's kinda girly and such, but in the end i spent less than i would've on a dell (bought it barely used off a friend) and because it's not a desktop replacement it does everything i need it for perfectly and is very convienient, and the battery life is the best i've heard of, even w/ dell's extended battery. everyone i know w/ PC notebooks always complains about their battery life, and if they have the extended battery, then they complain about the weight of it.
as for toshibas i've heard mixed reviews. My friend has one (i forget which model) and he loves it, but i've heard their quality isn't supposed to be that great. I'm not sure what kinda deals dell is putting out right now though. If you can't get a good deal on a dell i'd consider a toshiba, but usually dell has good deals and coupons. the $750 off a $1500 purchase over the summer was awsome. i know like almost 10 people personally that bought laptops during those sales.

Sucks for tax purposes that I can't write off the full original price but still less money out of my pocket.

Does dell give those crazy deals like the $750 off during certain times?
does dell sell their machines with the option of "no operating system"? i really dont need any software since i just going to formant and put linux on it.
it would be nice to save $100 or so bucks if they dont put XP and the other junk.

I'm ecstatic with the choice of the HP Pavilion DV1340us I ordered yesterday:
1.86GHz Intel Centrino Pentium M Processor 750
1024MB RAM
100GB Hard Drive
Lightscribe DVD+RW/CD-RW Combo Drive
802.11BG WLAN
Bluetooth
14" WXGA BrightView Display
XP Pro
hp Refurbished
$1169
PLUS
$195 for 3-year pick up and return warranty!
That's a FULLY LOADED laptop for $1365 with 3 times the warranty of a new machine. I can't wait to try the Lightscribe cds adn DVDs. This one has QuickPlay so I can play music and DVD without booting Windows and it comes with a remote to control playback.
Deal of the century! I'm replacing a HP laptop zt1145 which was pretty good to me.
Received my HP yesterday and it's lovely. Integrated media card reader for my digital camera, just right size, remote control included to control the DVD/MP3 player. All the usual ports: firewire, 3 usb, TV out. One of the coolest things is the ability to start up a DVD or music quickly without even booting windows. It's an awesome machine! The 14.1" widescreen display with BriteView (gloss coating) is a new thing to me, but I'll get used to it. I don't even know yet what to do with Bluetooth. This is my only device that has it. OH well, I got a GREAT deal from PCMall, and it looks brand new. There's NO sign this thing is refurbished, plus with my savings from new, I was able to buy a 3-year warranty, so no worries. Keep an open mind when shopping, and good luck with the search! This model (the HP dv1000) is one of the top-rated on the market for thin-and-lights.
My laptop I got is very similar, although it is an apple. My ppowerbook G4 has:
15.2-inch TFT Display
- 1280x854 resolution
- 1.5GHz PowerPC G4
- 512MB DDR333 SDRAM
- 80GB Hard Drive
- Slot-load Combo Drive
- ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 (64 MB DDR)
- Backlit keyboard
- Gigabit Ethernet
- FireWire 400 & 800
- Analog audio in/out
- DVI & S-Video out
- Trackpad scrolling capability
- AirPort Extreme
- Bluetooth 2.0 + Enhanced Data Rates
- Sudden Motion Sensor (SMS)
- two USB 2.0 ports
- DVI-to-VGA adapter
- Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger
That was for $1500 with free shipping.
Your processor, hard drive, and RAM are a little better. You got a great deal though. You can't beat that warranty.
