Guys, i have a problem.
My tablet worked perfectly fine and all of a sudden it stopped turning on. There is zero response.
Anyone know what could be wrong or how I can troubleshoot this without taking it all apart?
My USB hub and DAC still receive power. Tablet screen is fully shut off even during start up or shutting down engine (no splash screen)

the night before it was running and it was at about 76% battery. I had no apps running in the background overnight.
Usually the most it would drain overnight was like 3-6% at most.
I am pretty sure I had Power Event Manager running when I turned the car off.

took me a long time but got the pics replaced. and yes flickr is such better quality! also much easier to load and organize than photobucket. i always had to save my files as the proper size before photobucket but now i can do that all in flickr. much better! (but a pain to get fixed)

Awesome work getting the first post updated! Hope your setup is still running like a champ!
Wondering if you could do me a favor? I started having issues with Easycap Viewer - looks like you have the same Easycap device that I do, with the UTV007 chip. My backup cam worked great for a while but I did a factory reset and reinstalled the kernel etc to fix my battery drain issue and now I can't get Easycap Viewer to work properly , it just crashes constantly and is super glitchy. Can you take a couple pics of your settings for Easycap Viewer? No rush or anything, just whenever you have some free time.

Thanks for the quick reply, looks like i may have ended up out of luck with my backup camera lol. Even with all the settings the same it still crashes pretty constantly. Looks like they released an update and that must have broken it, I see your version is 1.15.xxxx and mine is 1.16.xxxx and after some investigating on the app it seems a lot of people are having the same problems now. Hopefully the developer will fix it.
So my conclusion, avoid updating Easycap Viewer!
I had the same charging problem, couldn't get over 300-400mA. The otg cable was my cause. I picked up this one: OTG CABLE and now my charging is pretty consistently 600-800 when the battery is high, and 900-1100mA when the battery is low. I know you have the full install and swapping it out is pretty involved, but if you're ever in there anyway I highly recommend picking one up!
For the sake of long term future reference, in case the above link ever breaks, it's from this site: www.usbfirewire.com

Man my battery used to charge between 200MA-550MA...lately I can barely get over 60MA
is my OTG cable messed up?
also anyone know how to fix this? Whenever I start my tablet i get this error message pop up. Wonder if i uninstalled something that was important.

If it's not your OTG cable, it's either your USB port or the USB charger you're using, have you tried another one?
Have you tried connecting to the Internet?

man i would love to have that much mA, that's one thing i wish i could do over is just get some bad ass wire for the otg. no way i'm taking this thing apart unless i absolutely have to haha. i'm still surviving for now, just gotta do a long drive every once in a while.
i have never seen a screen like the one you showed.

Left my car power on for about 2-3hrs and got my tablet back to 85% and this morning its been at steadily charging around 300-400MA.
But still not sure what that pop us all about. I did connect to wifi but that doesn't do anything. I believe I may have deleted some files that it needs.

great post and info on your nexus guide! ive had my setup for like almost 4 years now and its been running strong despite some bugs and freezes here and there.. i do have the 1st gen slower nexus 7.. i had it lying around the house and decided to put it to actual use
have you considered hard wiring the nexus 7 to a power source in the car? tried doing it to my 2012 N7 but i couldnt get it to work properly.. ive been thinking about replacing my 1st gen with a 2nd gen soon and was thinking if i was going to do another tablet setup i would want to hard wire it.. having a battery in the tablet is nice since it boots right up from its sleep but the constant low power mAh charging and random battery drains do get tiring
this is the video that shows you how to strip the power controller off the N7 battery and connect it to a USB wire

i may look into it for the future if i get the courage to take everything apart, it's such a big job and right now i'm just enjoying my car. however i am only getting about 150mA of charging power even though i'm less than 5% battery life, so that's been SUPER annoying. basically i haven't used the tablet at all this week to try to keep the power above 0 which sucks. i haven't had about 400mA charging in about 6 months now which is a bummer it takes forever to charge and my drive isn't long enough
there's a few things i would do differently if i were doing it over:
- look into a hardwire into the battery
- get the 32gb version so there is never a limit to the memory space (right now i'm already hitting my limit of 16gb and i don't even have my music on there, it's on usb)
- extend the tablet buttons like peter6 did in the following thread. before he wrote his thread, people said that it was nearly impossible to extend the buttons on a 2nd gen nexus 7, but he showed otherwise. this would be great to do a hard reset and reinstall whereas right now i'd have to remove the entire console to access those buttons for the reset. thread: https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-a.../#post16040988

thanks! i have looked into a hardwire connection directly to the battery source but i was worried about my battery dying on me. you haven't had any issues with it? and how does the tablet turn off and go into deep sleep when you turn off your car? it seems like it wouldn't because the tablet always has power?
There are two wires coming out of the Nexus 7 - the hack one that's using the car battery as a battery, and the other one that's using the normal charging port which is where you hook it up to the ACC wire so it turns on when your car is on.

I used a piece of plexiglass like Lexan or some cheap small acrylic sheet from Home Depot.
Had a local plastics store cut the sheet into a 1.5"x 3" sheet and bend it 3 times into a U shape, in 1" intervals.
Left one is for my hardwired dash cam, middle one is to power tablet while car is off, and right one will be either for reverse cam turn on (even when im driving forward or stopped at a light), or it will be for an aftermarket HFL bluetooth device since my HFL doesnt work.
All switches off:
Car turned off, middle switch ON to turn on tablet.
Power event manager used to shut off screen while it charges: double tap anywhere on screen to turn screen off while in power event manager
Screen turned back on by double tapping the screen
Just updating apps (my first time in about a month), with car off

Hey all. first time posting.
finally got my 3rd Gen TL from 2nd Gen!
I saw a lot of posts about replacing the navi with the Nexus 7 and I really really like the idea and functions.
every ones modifications are really nice and I think i really would like to try this
I came across this video on youtube and this is my favorite setup.
I would like to use the tablet and also be able to use the default screen for all of the other functions ( Radio, HVAC control, and CD etc...) pretty much saying I dont wanna lose any fuctions by doing this mod.
is it possible or do i lose some features. thanks in advance!

you don't lose any features doing this mod, the only thing you lose is the oem screen visually but all functions remain the same. many people including myself use the little window above the oem screen to see A/C, radio, etc. you cannot keep the oem screen and the nexus 7 together.
so... if you cant use both oem navi and nexus 7 together, how is this guy(on youtube video) able to hook up both at the same time?

oh i see what you mean. yea you can do that but it takes lots of soldering and rewiring but it can be done. there are a few write ups on how to do that in here but will greatly increase the work for this project. i didn't feel it was necessary because the tablet gives you navigation that the oem screen does. some people add the oem screen at the bottom because on some models you need that screen to see the AC settings (they don't have a small info window like mine does above the original oem screen)

I was hesitant with this mod also, especially since my navigation was still working for the most part (random times it would say "read disc error consult the dealer" for long drives).
There is nothing to lose, especially since you can always put back the OEM navigation screen in the future. All the cuts and modifications to accommodate the Nexus 7 is hidden
All your radio stuff and amp settings can still be accessed via the right knob.
The biggest question for me and many people are "what happens if the battery dies?".
It's noted in this DIY on how to set the Nexus 7 to power on in the event it receives power which is a HUGE plus since you'd normally have to hit the power button to turn on the tablet if the tablet dies.
To me this was only a (big) part of the solution.
It was annoying having my tablet boot up and then I go for a short drive and it gets charged to 3%, and then the next day it dies again, and then that cycle repeats and repeats.
Adding a switch to provide the tablet power while the car is off was the second part of the solution for me

Thank you guys!
you guys have answered so many questions I had!
My Oem Navi still works perfectly so I thought i might want to leave it in there but I guess I really dont have to.
My car also have a small info window just above the OEM NAVI. so, I guess I can use that to control my radio, HVAC and to my CD changer(MP3's stored in CD's do comes in handy for me).
I already did the “fastboot oem off-mode-charge 0” commend to my Nexus(2013 32gb) just in case the tablet dies from the lack of charging like you advised to do in the beginning of the thread sockr1 .
but I really like the idea guitarplayer16 had for his Mod. which is extending the power switch to the center console to simply just turn the tab off when you're in for the night. brilliant.

you may also want to look into going battery-less which is an option i wish i would have considered...no battery heat, no charging needed etc. there is a youtube video somewhere on it

yea me and GP talk a lot off the forum and we've been discussing this. i'll be adding in my switch as well like he did since my commute is short and doesn't charge enough to bring power all the way up. i'll be doing that as soon as i find some time! it's super helpful to be able to charge durign the evening and come into the car with a fully charged tablet.

It's actually not a hard mod to do at all and the concept is so simple; its brilliant!
The only downside would be that I'd have to remold my perfectly positioned tablet again.
I did read through some of the comments and some people were having problems with doing the battery-less option, though which is why I haven't decided to do it.
My guess is that you'd need to convert the 12V power from the car into the exact same that is provided by the Nexus 7 battery, otherwise things go haywire.

Right now I'm testing one idea. If it will work out then I might update my thread. (meaning no problems for 2 weeks)
Arduino and relay. Arduino is powered from car charger 100% of time (from fuse box). It draws 0.05A so I'm fine here.
When power is detected (on accessory socket), relay is energized and tablet gets power. When power is disconnected, tablet keeps getting power for another 10 seconds. This way it has power even when cranking engine. It's way more stable, and has no problems with otg (so far).
I also added button. If I press it, arduino will power tablet for 2 hours. Perfect time to charge tablet's battery, or do some updates.
Hardwiring to the tablet might work. You just need some buck converter as voltage on battery shouldn't be above 4.3V, only problem is detecting when power is connected. Supplying power to USB might work, or might create some weird loop.

Hey, I'd like to update with some of my experiences with my setup. There are a couple of things that I need to correct from my last post a while back. For one, looks like the version of Easycap Viewer was not a problem, turns out it was a combination of two things:
1. Account Verification. The app needs to occasionally verify your credentials to make sure you're not running an illegally downloaded copy. Since I almost never connected to the internet, it wasn't able to verify my account and would eliminate the Settings menu until it could be verified again.
2. Power Delivery. I tried adding another USB Y cable to provide a second power source to my USB hub, and now the app works perfectly. The Easycap device uses around 300-400mA (roughly tested by comparing the Nexus charging input with the device connected vs disconnected), though being standard usb it could require up to 500mA. So my assumption is when the tablet was lower battery (which is often the case because of my battery drain issue that I'm forever hunting lol), it would prioritize charging, supplying insufficient power to the Easycap device, causing constant crashes/restarts and loss of video signal.
