06 TL Transmission wont engage any gear
Hey guys,
I just bought a 06 TL with what I'm guessing is a bad automatic transmission. It is essentially in neutral all the time. The selector can be moved throughout the gears but nothing at all happens no noise no shutter no rpm change. In any gear you can roll the car forward or backwards. The indicator on the dash corresponds with whatever gear the selector is in.
I have no idea the history of the car. Anyone have any idea where to start before I begin calling transmission shops?

Maybe check the axles? Any other info? Has it worked prior, or did you purchase it this way?
There is also a sensor that could be bad. I can't remember the name of it at the moment.
(Range/gear position sensor?)
Hopefully someone with more knowledge will chime in.

I bought it in the condition it's in at such a low price that even if I have to replace the transmission I'm still making out pretty well. I have no prior history on it as it was bought at auction before I got ahold of it.
Plugged the snap on scanner in and didn't help any.
Pulled the range sensor off to verify it is working and is fine.
When I had the driver side jacked up and passenger side on the ground I put it in drive and the driver side rotor would barely turn after I helped it first. Figured what do I have to lose and pulled tranny filter out. It appears to be the original and was very brittle. No foreign debris or metal flakes at all in it. I couldn't even blow compressed air through it.
Called around locally and no one has a transmission filter in Stock so I just put the cap back on with no filter.
Now the car wants to barely inch forward but rocks back and won't move. Idle changes when it's put in gear. Is there a possibility that without the check valve in the filter it's not pumping through the transmission?
Are there any other filters that I can ask for that are compatible so I can at least try and see if there is one locally?

If there was no foreign debris in the filter....why couldn't you blow compressed air through it? If the filter was full of crap...there is probably more crap throughout the transmission that needs to be cleaned out as well.
I know nothing about the filters and compatibility options....but if the filter was that clogged, generally assume maintenance was never done and the rest of the transmission is probably in pretty bad shape as well. Search the forums about the pressure switches which are probably shot as well.

I was going to suggest it may be an issue with the transmission linkage. However, if you are able to actually get the car in Park, I am not entirely sure.
Have you checked the condition of the fluid and the fluid level?
As with anyone having transmission issues on the forum, it's generally good practice to start with the pressure switches and a 3x3 drain and refill. Probably won't solve your issue... but it's worth a shot if you're willing to throw ~$170 at the issue.

Oh....I completely missed the "neutral all the time" included when in Park. There are only three things that I can think of to cause that:
- broken axle (you said you checked those)
- broken parking pawl
- broken/mis-adjusted shift linkage
The condition of the clutches and filter should have no impact on the behavior of Park. Line pressure is not needed to engage Park. The fact that you say now it is locking the wheels, makes me think the shift linkage...but that is just a guess.

160-180k miles can't remember off the top of my head.
Just ordered an 06-07 AV6 tranny with 90k miles and lifetime warranty for 975 shipped.
I have spent too much time messing with it and decided this was the route to go.
