new car itch: Alfa Romeo Giulia Ti

Now that I've paid off my 2015 TLX V6 Tech, I've (unfortunately) seen the new Alfa Romeo Giulia Ti and sort have the itch for a new car. In many ways, the Giulia has what the TLX doesn't at the same relative price point. It has a more aggressive exterior and "luxurious" interior. A plethora of sport add-ons, and the 900 watt stereo and leather wrapped dashboard are options. 5.1 sec 0-60 for a 4 banger is not slouch either. Built in Italy in partnership with Ferrari.

However, it's an FCA car and it's a brand new platform.

Just wondering if others have seen this too. (I guess in the back of my mind I want to eventually trade up to the Audi S5 Sportback.)

Leasing it would be a good idea, as their terms are competitive for that kind of MSRP and this car is not established.

The reviews for the Giulia Quadrifoglio are excellent (and I have seen one on the road. Really nice looking). The car is not without its oddities, but it looks like an excellent car. My concern is that a new Italian sports car will not have a competitive financing option. When I was looking to replacing my TSX I considered looking at the Giulia but the base models are rarely reviewed and I can't get one in my area.

There are reports that the car has failed many of the internal FCA crash tests. I love the look and performance, but until I see some more info, I'd pass.

It could be at the last one of reliability ranking

The difference in the 2017 JD Powers Quality Rankings (problems /100 cars) between last place Fiat, and second to last place Jeep is ALMOST EQUAL to the difference between second to last place Jeep, and first place Lexus/Porsche.

Just think about that for a second, and then imagine where Alfa would be in relation to Fiat.

I love the new Alfas, and would love, love, love to get behind the wheel of a Quadrifoglio, so if a friend picked one up, I'd be thrilled. However, I would never, ever, ever buy one myself.

First year of a brand new model, made by Alfa, and sold as a luxury vehicles by the FCA network....................no Thank you.

I like the Quad but would stay away from any first year model especially an all new car from a label that have been out of the US market for a long tine. Back in the dim past used to navigate (slide rule & stop watch) for a guy with an Alfa Veloce in the Long Island rally series. Car was very reliable & nicely screwed together. Have fun memories of the brand & the series. Occasionally we swapped & I drove my MORGAN +4 SS & he navigated. The Alfa had a much better ride quality

Alfas aren't know for reliability to begin with, quite the opposite.
A first year Alfa model...run!

If so, lease one. I read on C/D or Motor Trend that their test Alfa got stranded in the middle of the road..lol.

I can understand the "just lease it" argument for a second car, etc, but for my daily driver, getting it into the shop for service, especially if its unscheduled is a real hassle. Being stranded would be much more than just an inconvenience.

Was just reading the MT article on the 2.0T and they have the same thoughts, 2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia 2.0 First Test: Two outta three? - Motor Trend

Lease prices are pretty aggressive locally and seem to be targeting the Audi A4 crowd.

As Saintor mentioned, Lease it!
If you're used to Japanese reliability an Alfa may be a shock to your system lol. As the reliability on those things is dreadful even compared to most other european brands.

Yeah, it's still a royal pain in the behind even for minor problems. Going back and forth from the dealership is such a pain and I feel like an idiot doing it.

I love the car from what I've seen of it in articles and on MotorWeek, but ... while I doubt Acura will be my next car, I doubt I want to go from the frying pan into the fire. The Alfa may require a new engine before I get it home. lol. I can't have it as my primary car until they've gotten some track record of reliability. History states just the opposite.

Lol, CR's review is funny of the Giulia. The predicted reliability is at the very bottom and it destroys what would be a decent score.

Probably because a few of us old-timers recall the last time Alfa came to the states intent on taking on the 3-series. Quality was the main thing that killed the Milano.

And it certainly doesn't help that Fiat has done little to improve its quality in the recent past.

I love the Guila especially the Quadrifoglio. I even like the new Alfa SUV, the Stelvio.

But there is not way I would buy a first year Alfa, heck even a second year Alfa could be questionable.. But man do I love the looks and sound of it..

Alfa has a lot to prove from a reliability standpoint. Fair or not. I love them and I wouldn't touch this one for a couple of years.

Yeah, although a nicely equipped Ti would be under $50k, I'll save much duckets for the S5. Less expensive in the long run IMO.

An A5 Sportback or A4 wouldn't carry the reliability risk of the Alfa.

This article openly admits that the data for Alfa is incomplete.

The rest of it read a lot like an Audi advertisement.

Or an Audi victory lap. There's a lot to like in the B9, and it has the advantage of being fresh like the Alfa.

Notice how Acura is not even mentioned, TLX begs for a turbo or something. It's one thing to finish last, another to be completely ignored. Especially when all others are invited. Sad, really.

Honda is run by the accountants. They're worried they won't sell a real sports sedan, so they rebadge the Accord and say "It's that kind of Thrill"

Well I still prefer the rebadged Accord to that overpriced Jetta.

In what way? It's a completely different platform than the Jetta. It also doesn't share any engines or drivetrains with the jetta. The TLX can't say that and glad you finaly realize and admit it is a rebadged accord.

On what planet were you? The TLX/TL (at least from gen 2) has always been Accord-based, as most of their offerings including SUV. At the same time, Acura has always done a decent job of differentiating them, and the TLX is no exception. Glorified Accord? I never had a problem with that. The A4 is a competent and nice, but a relatively dull car, as reported in the comparo above and they picked the Alfa for that reason. It may not fit your Acura-whining agenda, I much prefer having the temper of a superb V6 and the TLX is a great car to own. Before an $50K automatic 4-cyl. A4, I would consider a $30K manual GLI / GTI.

You always do this thing where you try and confuse the point when you are flat out wrong. I'm not wasting my time. Nobody is whining other than you.

I dunno, my "rebadged jetta" is a lot more fun that my rebadged Accord Euro was.

After all, the A4 is just a rebadged jetta with:
  • A completely different body
  • A completely different interior
  • A completely different drivetrain
  • A completely different transmission
  • A completely different suspension
  • A completely different engine with about 80 more hp

LOL if you ask 20 people if they'd rather have an Audi A4 or an Acura TLX I would bet the overwhelming majority would pick the A4 if not all of them. There's actually NO comparison. The Acura doesn't even look as good as an Accord Sport. It's also weak performance wise. Speaking of Dull, TLX is the prototypical dull car.

Oh yeah there is a comparison. I owned Audi in the past. The 1st and 2nd gen of A4 were among my favorite cars, after that they went downward. Current Audi A4 are nice, but rather over-rated and there is not much exciting there for $45-50K as supported by the comparo above... I didn't even like its interior and its 4-cyl. engine could scream "Jetta". Bof...

The only thing you like about your TLX is the V6 sound

Tell us, how often do you listen to that engine scream, with all the sound deadening in the TLX? How often do you even rev the shit out of it, as I could have sworn you said you don't drive like that.

Im glad you have your engine noise. That's all you have.

I'm sure I would be able to hear that wonderful V6 if my Jetta 4-Cylinder A4 weren't a half second faster to 60 than the TLX.

HIs comment is to be expected. Saintor always has problems with cars that cost more than whatever thing he is currently driving. Same old same old Saintor from the BMW forms defender of the bottom end of the series. God forbid anyone should get a turbo instead of an N/A I6.

He also big on bringing up old cars which have no value in the current conversation. Hey my 1962 409/409 Impala was the greatest car in the world, Whoopty do & .20 cents would get you on the Trolley Car.
