After complaining to my dealer, Acura directly and filing a complaint with NHTSA over how slow delivery of my inflators has been, the parts for driver and passenger side magically showed up at my dealer yesterday. Squeaky wheel gets the grease. Dropping it off after work today. Going to miss the mpg and bigger room in the sonata plus free xm radio, but driving my RL to the train station this morning Reminded me just how great the RL really is.

So question: it seems like many of you are getting both the driver & passenger side airbag inflators replaced,

For our '05 RL the dealer is only replacing the driver side airbag under the recall.
If I go to the honda airbag recall website and plug in our VIN# - sure enough the airbag recall only applies to the driver side....

what gives?

^ I'm facing a similar situation. I've been given to understand it's conditional on the passenger airbag.

^Thats correct. Language is delightfully ambiguous in recall notice below, but I'd wait Im sure theyll eventually expand the recall. Im still waiting for mine to come in seems it came in REAL quick when I had rental but they have no incentive now since Im not burning their money in a rental.

NHTSA RECALL NUMBER: 16V-344
MFR CAMPAIGN ID: KA3
CAMPAIGN DESCRIPTION: Passenger Airbag Inflator
RECALL DATE: 05/23/2016
RECALL STATUS: Recall INCOMPLETE
SUMMARY:AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO., INC. (HONDA) IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2003-2006 ACURA MDX AND 2005-2011 ACURA RL VEHICLES. ACCORDING TO THEEQUIPMENT DEFECT NOTIFICATIONS (16E-042, 16E-043, AND 16E-044) FILED BY TAKATA, THE PROPELLANT WAFERS IN SOME OF THE SUBJECT INFLATORS MAY DEGRADE OVER TIME, WHICH COULD LEAD TO OVER-AGGRESSIVE COMBUSTION IN THE EVENT THE AIRBAG IS ACTIVATED. OVERLY AGGRESSIVE COMBUSTION CREATES EXCESSIVE INTERNAL PRESSURE WHEN THE INFLATOR IS ACTIVATED, WHICH MAY CAUSE THE INFLATOR BODY TO RUPTURE. ACURA SUGGESTS THAT YOU AVOID HAVING A PASSENGER SIT IN THE FRONT PASSENGER'S SEAT UNTIL THE RECALL REPAIR HAS BEEN PERFORMED.

SAFETY RISK:IN THE EVENT OF AN INFLATOR RUPTURE, METAL FRAGMENTS COULD PASS THROUGH THE AIRBAG CUSHION MATERIAL POSSIBLY CAUSING SERIOUS INJURY OR FATALITY TO VEHICLE OCCUPANTS.

So after having a basic b***h Hyundai for nearly 3 months, I finally got the call. Parts are only in for the drivers side however, they still haven't gotten the passenger side. -____- Should I ask to keep the rental until the passenger side comes in?

As soon as the dealer replaces the unit for the drivers side you will no longer be eligible for a rental car due to the passenger side issue. Tell the dealer that you want to bring your car in Once for both repairs. Have them order the passenger side and give you a call when they are ready to replace both...

I would explain to them my car is a shared car so there is always a passenger in the car (either myself or my wife) and I don't feel comfortable driving a car with the possibility of one of us getting injured/killed. If it's not ok to drive with a bad drivers air bag, why should it be ok with a bad passengers? If it's fine to drive, I would like a letter from Acura explaining it's perfectly fine to drive the car with a faulty passenger air bag with a passenger in the front seat... My lawyer would like to hold on to this letter.

Maybe the dealer told you that - but people got rentals for passenger too after the driver's got done.

My dealer would not give a rental for the passenger side recall.. Surprising given the language in the notice.

Hey Everyone,
So I was in a rental for approximately 2 months - POS Jeep Cherokee and a more POS Dodge Journey. I got the call that the part came in and my Acura was fixed. Also was told that I had 3800 dollars in things that needed to be fixed. Not the call I wanted. My question is, I have not received a recall for the passenger airbag. Is that something that is a definite or only certain build dates?
I have a 2008 Acura RL

**side note - I had my acura towed to a local mechanic and he is doing their "list" for half the price.

RL09 - I typed in my VIN and it shows 0 recalls showing.
Maybe they did both while it was at Acura.
I will have to check.
Thank you,

Welcome.

Even if its not posted, I think calling and asking for it will get it done. Both inflators are by Takata and both are being changed.

If you use the right side of the link i sent you, and enter your model year, you can see the 3 recalls.

What on earth is going on with that company.

Let it go bankrupt already and let's change suppliers.

Acura changed suppliers and is not using takata parts anymore, that's part of why the repairs are taking so long to complete. This was only a recent decision as 2014-2016 Acura vehicles have takata inflators. The biggest risk is on the older models since its corrosion that is the issue. A car like my 05 is much more vulnerable.

Well I'm honestly quite shocked. The Acura has been gone now for quite some time and I still haven't received the call that I could bring it in for the recall work.

However I just called the Ford dealer down the road to see if I could get my Mustang done and they without hesitation told me to bring it in and they'll get it done while I wait.

That's what I'm talking about!

Finally got passenger done after waiting for months even bigger cluster than driver side one noting that driver more impt and they are first come first serve. Also they denied me for rental too oh well glad it's all done and just when I thought all cars complete I got a note on another car 2001 that's now being recalled that wasn't under recall initially a year ago. Calling them was met very different experience though it was sure we have parts come right in and we'll get ya all done.

on poster that noted their dealer quoted then over $3k for work I had same shit happen to me when they did driver side I specifically told them JUST do recall. Funny thing I looked at everything they noted and couldn't find evidence of any repair needed as I was just under there before their so called inspection which they never offered to show me the repairs needed.

I have been in a rental since June 23. On Aug 20, I get an email saying my driver's side inflator was in so had arranged for my car to be flatbed over to the dealer. But somehow, they forgot to order the passenger one but was told that is not on back order. I told them since I am in a rental, it doesn't matter to me. Finally got a call this past Sunday that everything is done so I have my 06 back. Missed driving it so much. But in the meantime, in the 2+ months that I was in a relatively new Camry rental, I put on more than 5,000 miles which could have been on my car. Waiting for the same notice for my 2008 MDX.

I too was told that I had a leaky oil pump that will cost $1200 to reseal. I was told one time by this dealer that my 08 MDX had a leaking power steering rack and should keep an eye on the fluid level. After 18 months, the PS fluid never moved. Just another case of shadiness of the dealer.

How many of you guys are driving rentals that have the same Takada airbags as the car you're waiting to get fixed???

if you are suggesting the rentals are at risk, I would argue that's not the case. The inflator issue centers on corrosion. Corrosion takes place over a very long period. If you are driving a 2010 car onward, there is no risk, or significantly lower risk. It's the older cars most at risk.

This is actually a good thing. Takata inflators, even new ones, are still being made with the questionable propellant that deteriorates with time. The other suppliers Acura is now using do not, which means we can trust the replacement inflators once we eventually get them. I don't want new inflators that only postpone the same time bomb for my loved ones and myself.

Acura Canada refusing to acknowledge the passenger airbag replacement like acura US is. I asked for their position in writing and will have to use creative legal skills to get it done.

I think they are counting on the fact that Canadian cooler weather wouldn't corrode those parts - but I don't want any takata inflator in my car.

Well, got a call at 5pm from Acura that my airbags were in. They said they would give my info to a towing company to get the car. Within 5 minutes the towing company called me. I told them I'd be home around 6:15 and they could get it between 6:30 and 8:30. She said that's fine and will give my info to the driver and he would call me when he's about 10 minutes from my house. And no kidding, 5 minutes after that (around 5:15) the driver calls em and says he's on his way. Explained to him I'm not home and the times I told the company that I would be home... Seems like after a month they're in a real hurry to fix my car now...

So I guess it'll be done tomorrow and I'll be getting my car tomorrow night

Well, that didn't work. The tow truck driver was going to just pick up the front wheels and tow it. Then he saw it was "too low" as I advised him it was an AWD. He take a PT Cruiser off the bed and tries to get mine on the bed with no luck. The front bumper was scrapping. He tried with 2x4's and 4x4's and it was too low. Even with the 4x4's he scrapped the bottom of my bumper pretty good. I tried to explain a better way to try it, but he didn't want to listen...

I guess Acura will be calling me in the morning to figure something else out...

Including repairing the damage to your bumper. Take pictures of the scrapes. I would suggest to your Acura dealer find another tow service and 'NOT Dee-Way' towing. Further your Acura dealer should have specified a flat bed for an AWD vehicle was necessary - there should have been NO mention of a bumper tow. The Acura dealer chose that vendor, not you. They should know the towing requirements of the car. They need to take responsibility.

Seriously, how would they tow a GT-R?

To be honest, that's a good problem to have. on the car.

So I talked to the service director. He was an asshole... He told me I have 24hrs to return the rental or I will be charged for it myself. I explained to him my work schedule and I can't just leave work. Doesn't matter, doesn't care. So I will have to return the rental car tonight after work, before 6pm and DRIVE MY CAR till I can get there on Saturday. He said ok and left it at that. So I have an appointment on Saturday to get both airbags swapped out...
