2006 Acura TL HFL stopped working

Hi Guys,

My HFL stopped working at 60,171 kms. The unit will not search for the paired phones. I have reset the system and still does not work. Thank goodness for my advisor, he managed to replace the unit under warranty. He hinted that the units has problems. Anyone have the same problem?

My 2005 TL HFL had pairing problems from day 1. They replaced it under warranty and a year later it stopped working. They replaced it under warranty in 2007 again. It stopped working about 2 months ago, long out of warranty at 116,000 miles....watch out, mine says "booting up" on the MID and when it does, my battery is dead in 3 days. The HFL occasionally starts to work and then my battery is not drained.

After my 2nd battery died when the car sat for three days, I took it in to the dealer for excessive battery drain. Turns out the biggest problem was the HFL. It was just barely covered under warranty ( time limit ). I had no idea it was bad. It worked fine with my old phone, but when I upgraded, my new phone wouldn't pair. I just figured the phone was incompatible. After they replaced my HFL, the new phone works 100% .

2006 TL failure

I own a 2006 TL and my HFL just failed also - im about 9 months out of warranty. Reading other sites - it looks like it might be a caitor issue on the circuit board

Charleymutton,

How much does you dealer charge for a new one?

Mine has not worked since I bought the car(used). Was enjoying the car so much that I didnt check to see if it worked and was out of warranty by the time I tried to use it.

What is your price from your dealership and what dealership do you work for??

A new one from the dealer is just silly out of warranty. List is like 700-800 IIRC.

I would spend that money on a HU that has integrated bluetooth instead, or a 3rd party wire in unit like parrot.

Mine hasn't been working for some time... I can get to the menu, but it won't pair any phones. I replaced my USASpec Ipod adapter with the DICE Mediabridge with bluetooth. It works pretty well, but I have to have the radio on and XM selected (I use the XM function to control the mediabridge). If the radio isn't on or I have it on AM/FM or CD, then the bluetooth does not connect. For me this is a minor inconvenience since I mostly listen to USB memory sticks with songs on them over the mediabridge.

The one bigger inconvenience is that I can't dial through the HU, so have to dial or press voice command on the phone. I wish there was a way to at least activate voice command through the HU with the mediabridge.

The mediabridge was something around $300-330, so much cheaper than a new HFL unit.

There are 3 different part numbers, depending on the color of the HFL bezel in your TL's interior-- see post #170 in the thread at: https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-audio-bluetooth-electronics-navigation-94/bluetooth-fails-792642/.
Post #164 has a link to the most common HFL and bezel replacement, FWIW.

Install should take 10 minutes if you're working slowly and carefully, not including time to open the packaging for the new HFL.

This is great news! I had resigned myself to having no HFL since my TL is way out of warranty. The system seemed to be working fine until I got a new cell phone a couple of years ago and discovered that I could not pair it. For $180 and a 10 minute self install I'm going to go for it! Will post update in a few days...

Unhappy Bummer

Tried to order 39770-SEP-A01ZA from Acurapartswarehouse.com. Today they cancelled my order because they said the part is discontinued. Now I'm trying to order it from oemacuraparts.com. It actually is listed a few dollars cheaper there, $174.34 plus $8.03 to ship USPS. Sent them my vin # so maybe they will ship me the new part--I saw on a different thread that there is a new part number 39770-SEP-305ZA. Wish me luck-I'm now determined to fix this but it's very disappointing that you can't get the part very easily.

2006 Acura TL HFL stopped working

I suffered from intermittent connection after several trips to the dealer including one that positively verified that there was an issue with the unit it was replaced under warranty.
So far the unit is still working.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, AZine has answers for virtually everything. About 3 months ago, my iPhone 4 stopped working with the HFL function. I tried time and again to repair, including deleting the existing pairing and starting from scratch. Nothing. Because I don't use the function that often anyway, I wasn't really worried about it. About 3 weeks ago, I went to start my car on a Monday morning and it was dead (had sat over the weekend when we were out of town). I jumped it and let it charge. I took it to the dealership who checked the battery, the starter, and the alternator...all checked out well. While I was glad everything checked out, you can appreciate the frustration of being left without an answer on why the car died to begin with. Last week I tried to use the HFL by pressing the control on my steering wheel...it was dead. After sitting in my garage for about 30 hours without being run, I started it this morning...and boy did "Zippy" struggle. He barely started. I went outside and felt the point of contact, which is warm. So, I am 99% sure the issue is the HFL and, what appears to be, the infamous "battery draining" scenario. The appt to fix it is this Thursday. Glad it is still under warranty. Hard to believe the part is $178.69 on AOEM site..and take less than 10 minutes to fix...yet Acura charges upwards of $800. Anyway, I remain grateful for AZine.

+1. This is how it is for almost any AUTO part and IDK why..

Internet takes less time/money than running a store and its more convenient for us customers yet the internets pricing is way less than going to the store..You would think it would be the opposite.

I do have two used HFL units for sale at $80 plus shipping and they came out of an 07 TYPE-S and 06 base.

I wonder if the replacement part is the same junk they put in it from the factory, or is a real FIX... I think its general practice for GM to just replace the broken part with the same faulty component and just keep replacing the item over and over rather than fixing it. Kinda like my headliner in this TL. They fixed it once under warranty with the same poor fasteners. So it droops about and inch at the sunroof.. because it broke a 2nd time. It only last about 7k miles.

I now have 70K miles on my Acura and the Bluetooth just stopped working. I have an existing warranty and have not taken it in but the pairing does not work. It goes through the motions, tells me it is searching for a bluetooth device but never finds one.

yup yup.. thats me... next..

These TL's have many problems. But the engines do seem to run for a long time. Just everything else is like GM. Transmissions are worse though, than GM, IMO.

My HFL stopped working about a week ago. I haven't had any problems with the battery but it just says "booting up" when I try to connect my phone. Is there anything I can do besides having to replace it??

Follow the links in this forum to replace the cap or buy a used one somewhere

I had a battery issue after my car sat for about 2 months (dead battery). My HFL unit was replaced at the end of my 04's warranty period. The date my unit is December 06'. I took it out today just for giggles and much to my surprise it was warm to the touch (against my face). I think I am just going to replace the capacitor in hopes of preventing any issues later. My HFL works, I want to keep it that way. Now I need to find a local source for the cap so I can replace it today.

My HFL quit around 120000 miles. Sure enough, unit under the microphones died. Dealer charged me $580 for the work ($280 for the part, rest labor). It also cost me two batteries as I tried to figure out what the hell was going on - continuous reboot of HFL just eats your battery alive. You can kill it by going to the HFL screen and interrupting the boot up, but you have to do this pretty much each time you turn on the engine. It was worth paying the money because I've kept the car for another 60000 miles and we're still going for another year. Problem I just experienced is my NAV just stopped displaying on the main screen and where the clock is located. Any ideas?

search the forum before letting dealer getting your car. Part (if you can't bake fix) is about $225 and labor is 10 minutes. Always check the forum first when you have a problem. Someone else probably has figured out a fix that is much cheaper than dealer....just an fyi.
