02 TL mystifying me...

I am working on an 02 TL for a friend, and it is having intermittant issues. On a cold start, it barely runs, blows black smoke out the exhaust, and if it will rev at all, it maxes out at 3000 rpm. It has no power until it warms up. It also will misfire so violent the engine will immediately stall, as if a plug fired out of sequence. The MIL and TCS lights are on, and it was throwing quite a few codes. Replaced the two sensors behind the front cam gear, as there was a TDC sensor error stored. Are there any other sensors that measure either cam or crank on this engine?

As soon as my wife returns with my car, I will have the codes it is throwing, as my scantool is in it.

3000 rpm limit means its in Limp Mode,,ecu thinks there has been an overrev or other major issue
limits rpm to prevent damage and lets you `limp` off the road to safer parking

google the code

Nope, and after scouring the forum, I found a link to the 2nd gen FSM. I have downloaded it and with it, I have identified the issue. The resistance of the Crank Position Sensor is out of range when it is cold. I will be replacing it later today, and hopefully it will resolve the issue at hand.

There was someone in the CL subforum that was experiencing the same issue, so I am posting up the pages I used to find the problem. Hopefully his is similar or the same.

thats a very unusual failure

was there an issue of water-washing engine
or work done on front of engine,, where the sensors could have be damaged?
