Post Help with Used Acura Purchase Decision

Hello:

I am new to this site, just registered. Came across while searching reviews for TL's and TSX models. I have leased my last 3 cars and would like to buy this time, but cannot afford a new Acura. I have 3 cars I am looking at and would like some advice. One is a 2008 white TSX with 68K and has transferrable extended warranty from a private seller for approx. $17200. It does have front bumper damage and would definitely have to be repainted, otherwise car is in great condition (would try and take additional $ off for this). Another car is not by first or second choice in color, (Carbon gray pearl) but still very nice, 07 TL with 51K and is listed at $20,995 at a Subaru Dealer with a 60day warranty. Car was in very good condition, few scratches. Third choice (tough one), haven't seen this car, family member who owns garage is getting this 2006 TL black on black car in with approx 80K miles and mentioned he would sell to me for about $13,500 if the car checks out ok, but have no idea of the condition. Any thoughts suggestions would be great! Thanks

If you've been leasing, why not continue leasing? Saves you the headache if anything breaks down, esp. these old cars...and you get a new car every 2-3 years. Go look at Hyundai.

For a little over 20k you can get a 4G TL from a private seller, keep searching. Do any of the three have nav, are the TLs s-types?

3G TL > 4G TL

Try to look around more. I think the type-s ones are holding its value very well. And try to get a 6MT one.. it's a whole different animal. I think it's really hard to find though.

Good luck!

I am not sure of the high mileage TL as my uncle has not gotten the car yet, but the other two do not have navi system and they are both Base models 3.2L. My biggest dilemma is wondering if considering an acura with slightly higher mileage is OK to consider? Was trying to keep price under 20K, which I am noticing is hard to do for one with decent mileage etc. This would be my 1st acura, past leased cars, accord, altima, civic. Don't want to lease anymore and just keep making payments, plus I usually drive 15K+yearly. Looked at Hyundai Sonata and decided against it.

Not sure about the rest, but Legends (a.k.a. RLs) seem to run forever. No mileage worries whatsoever as long as the previous owner kept up with maintenance. See here:

https://acurazine.com/forums/showthr...ghlight=legend

https://acurazine.com/forums/showthr...=746000&page=2 (post 51 is where it's at!)

If you do go RL, stay away from '05.

Keep looking. I think the price on the 07 is good but I would see if you can get one at an Acura dealer so you can get one CPO.

Where do you live? Here is one in NJ for just over $20K....

Welcome to AZ!

Of the three you list, the TSX is the best deal, pending actually laying eyes on the third car. I'd keep looking, you can get some good deals on TLs and TSXs as noted above.

I have an 06 TL with 96K on it...runs like it was new. If the car has been maintained don't sweat it.

Drive the TSX and the TL to decide between the two models.
I'd get the TSX if it was a manual transmission, but a TL if the TSX was a 5A car.

The Acuras should have a change of brake fluid and auto trans fluid about every 30-40K; the timing belt change is around the 105K mile mark (the Acura Maintenance Minder system actually is specific to the car and not mileage-dependent). Otherwise, oil + filter changes are all that are necessary from a maintenance perspective.

Good luck!

Welcome to our funhouse. The folks here in Car Talk all currently or have owned an Acura in the past. This crowd might try to sway you into a BMW/Audi/Mazda, or heaven forbid, a Subaru

I'd also ask the same question in the TSX / TL / and RL sections of Acurazine. Get more of an idea of what to expect with each car.

That's cute . Having owned both and driven s-type AT/MT, no. NJ SHAWD was offered 27k for an 09 sh-awd/tech w/ only 23.5k miles from a dealer on a trade. I'm sure you can get one for well under 27k with under 50k miles and then extend the warranty. A fwd/tech would be even less but after coming from a FWD and then driving an AWD I can ever go back FYI!

In stock form some of the colors are ugly because of the beak, this does not apply to PM/WDP and with a few minor mods it looks like a spaceship on wheels; have you seen FYAH , Con17, Buck Vegas or my 4G?

Sorry to derail your thread Janson but I think this'll help you in your decision and "Cartalk" is in desperate need of the truth!

I had a 3G TL which I love/d and the impression I feel between the cars is more sport vs more luxury; although the 4G is more capable performance wise. Get a 4G, don't be bland.

what was the main reason why you leased your last 3 cars?

If it was because you like to have a new car every 2-3 years and you get sick of cars very easily, then buying a car is not a smart move. You probably will Either end up wasting more $ at the end or you will feel miserable for the next several years driving a car that you dont want to drive.

I know exactly how that feels...

Dude, I'm really sorry, but I really don't like the look of 4G TL. It's a subjective matter. It can look VERY hawt to you, but it can look fugly to some others. That's all.

Even if the car has the performance and driving feel of BMW 335i, I would never purchase it just because of the look of it.

Some people can't accept a horrifyingly ugly car. Aesthetics mean something to many cae buyers.

But lets not turn this into a typical 4G = a great car thread, since there are plenty of those in the 4G section where they SHOULD STAY.

Maybe you didn't see...the op wants to say under $20K.

BTW the 4G pics should be deleted from this thread since it is an irrelevant choice...besides we all know what they look like.

Janson I know you said you'd like to keep it under 20k but it's very difficult to do so for a low mileage, used Acura, especially from a dealer. There is a very high premium on 07-08 Type-S which leave the 09's very competitively priced.

You're right, I should've suggested a Kia/Hydunai/Mazda since we're in "Cartalk" . When the design is dated I'm sure you'll consider the 4G enough for your tastes

I have a late model '04 TSX with 105K miles and my father has an '05 TL with 140K miles. Both run like new, both still look new, and both have never given a single mechanical problem.

Provided that the specific cars you're looking at have been maintained, you won't have any problems.

Best of luck in your search.

Depending on where you live AWD may or may not be important. And depending on your driving style MT may or may not be important. BUT... and I think most people on here would agree, the Acura navi/ sound system combination is really an asset and takes the TSX/TL to another level. As other posters have said, keep looking and for peace of mind try to find a car that is CPO and/or under 4yrs/50,000mi and get an ACURA extended warranty. You'll have many years of happy, contented motoring.

This guys is a troll.

OP, try to look around for more TSX. I'm sure there're some good deals with it.

How about an English lesson; sentence structuring and spelling intensive, would you be up for one of those? Lol couldn't even get it right after the first edit, quite sad.

Firey in here. OP- whatever you do, shoot for low miles. Don't buy a car with more miles than you'd like just because its within your price range. That said, I'd pick the 07.

I guess I have to say I like 4G TL since we are on Acurazine, yeah? Otherwise, I'm a troll.

4G TL

OP get 4G TL because 4G TL owners want you to get it even if it's out of your budget. It's that good.

The OP did not mention a 4G, so why is it a topic?

But I would say talk down the 07 TL, take a look at Edmunds.com to get a ballpark estimate on the going price.

L2R. He mentioned wanting to get a used Acura and wanting to purchase for under 20k, although one of the vehicles considered is 21k. No point getting an 07 baser when you can get an 09 w/ tech for 3-4k more (private sale) and since your doing the paper work yourself can pay only 20k worth of sales tax.

80k miles is not high mileage in my eyes anything over 150k miles would be what I start considering high mileage.

I mean hell you haven't even got to the timing belt replacement yet, and if that has not been replaced yet, its not a high mileage car :P

don't be afraid to buy a japanese car with 80k plus miles on it, it will last you.

But he would still be paying $3-4K over his budget. He's not getting a 4G, let it go.

Does anyone here think a 2007 base TL with 51k mi for $21k is a good deal?!? I picked up my '07 RL tech last December with half that many miles and CPO for $5k more. I would expect ALOT more than a base for that price and miles.
