Welcome!

And...wait for it...wait for it...wait for it...soon, seriously.

It's quiet at normal throttle, and a muffled scream at WOT.

Seems like the HP/TQ numbers on the Ice Box are much lower then the Takeda and Injen intakes.

I would love to have one but isn't the whole point of replacing the stock box to gain power?

Any explanations?

Lou.

Honestly...even though the takeda and injen show greater gains on the dyno graph, I genuinely do not believe that I gained 12hp from my takeda intake.

I am very skeptical when it comes to intake testing because companies can create unrealistic driving situations to contrive the numbers they want to sell. CTE however, I think keeps it real with their numbers and does not try and enhance their product to look insanely better than it really is.

Overall, CTE's numbers are probably just more "accurate." Who knows how much power I am actually getting from my takeda intake though.

That is one interesting consideration, i don't know for sure, but i suspect the OEMs may do dyno testing in some sort of wind tunnel.
I notice many cars have sort of an airscoop under the hood, in the front of the engine compartment.
They must have done some wind tunnel testing to determine it was beneficial.
afaik none of the aftermarket companies do this in any meaningful degree.
i don't think placing wimpy fans in front of the car simulates any calibrated or useful amounts of airspeed.

the flipside to this is the OEMs also probably tune their engines for the entire range of throttle loads and engine speeds.
The aftermarket only cares about WOT and mid to high RPMs, so most other considerations can be disregarded.

cte probably measures gains at the wheels while others measure at the hubs. i'm just speculating though

I was hoping that someone would do a independent dyno, with before and after intake installed to find out if the Takata in Injen make as much power as they claim. With having several dyno graphs on my car my numbers are quite a bit different.

With that said I do understand that all dyno's are different. But take into account that your car make a little more power when it has a few miles on it. My first dyno sheet I only had 900 miles and it was quite a bit higher than theirs.

do you have a MT or an AT? Don't AT transmission lose more power? I wonder if that explains why my car dyno lower. (obviously i have AT lol)
and i'd love to do before and after dyno, but im not about to pull my injen off, get a baseline, install it again, and dyno it again. too much work lol.

I do have a manual and yes automatic transmission lose more power than manuals. I have heard around 5%. I totally understand about taking off your intake just to see the differance it is a pain in the ass. I was just lucky that they had to show the increase between the two

ah, i see. well, i can always take it to a dyno and see if i would get 164whp as injen have gotten. it'd have to be sometime in March though. RX8 club is doing a mass dyno at a local dyno place in so cal, and since i used to have a RX8, i am gonna ask if i can tag along lol. 50 bucks for 3 pulls sounds pretty damn good to me.
ps i know weather conditions and what nots may effect dyno results, so unless its really hot in March, i just might do it, haha.

Hmmm...what's this?

I feel like a kid.

Guess what Buster Brown deliv...was supposed to deliver yesterday but he got lost and I picked up at UPS this morning?

Billet aluminum MAF adapter.

C.A.R.B. E.O.#

MAF adapter velocity stack.

Air inlet tube velocity stack.

Icebox.

*Real* carbon fiber lid, superlight box.

Assembly.

I cannot wait to put this thing on, but I have to go to work. I just couldn't help myself. Thanks to the guys at CT-E with the best engineered real world performance parts I've ever used.

Oh, and Boosted, yes, there's a guy here in town that has a chassis dyno, I was thinking about testing mine before & after.

Gotta run, catch y'all later.

Sorry, kinda long.

Sheesh, almost forgot the best part.

The whole gist of the deal with the icebox is this;

1) It doesn't lengthen the original intake tract. The car was engineered with the airbox terminating where it does and where the icebox does. The original airbox is designed with quiet operation above all, even if it sacrifices performance and/or a little loss in efficiency.

2) It's not a ram air, it provides a place to draw cool air from without sticking the filter in the fenderwell. The filter is in the box up top.

That does two things;
a) Makes it a lot easier to clean without taking the gravel guard, fender liner or bumper partially apart to access it.
b) There's no way short of total submersion where one is trying to hydrolock the engine on purpose that this thing would allow significant water ingress.

3) There's a large 4" diameter velocity stack-equipped air entry path that straightens the air coming into the tube.

4) Another velocity stack *is* the foundation of the MAF adapter, air filter mount.

5) The box is plastic and not metal. Think about it...if you draw cool(er) air from outside the car, then pass it through a long metal tube, the heat from the radiator will soak into that tube and warm it back up again.

IMHO, CT-E is and always has been a *performance* company with *no* compromises. Many others in this industry are marketing companies and just happen to be in the automotive performance business. In other words, they're not going to tell you what you want to hear to buy a part. If it only makes X horsepower, you can bet that's what they stand by.

Also IMHO, the best performance parts are designed to work together and don't just aim for peak power. Some parts will yield top rpm gains but sacrifice hp/tq at lower rpms where you normally spend your time driving. I'm not willing to make that compromise.

Dude! It came out? how much and where? definitely post some pictures up when you install it. How's the weight compared to the OEM intake unit?

I couldn't wait to do a dyno and all that, I've been waiting since 8/08 for this thing. I still haven't driven it, I'm headed out in an hour or so & will experience it then.

Look at all the convoluted crap that comprises the stock airbox and resonator.

I just returned from a 300 mile trip and funny how little areas I had to try this thing out. It's completely quiet during regular to mid throttle, definitely pulls harder at WOT but isn't obnoxiously loud at all.

I did notice my MPG on the MIDI has bumped up to 28.2, and this was a road trip, but I only got 26 on the same trip last Thursday.

Heavy,

How did you get the portion of the intake assembly out from under the battery? I got the resonator out from in the wheel well but the bit that is 'under' the battery is a mystery to me.

In order to remove that primary air inlet/resonator, you have to loosen the ECM mount and remove the battery tray. Then you can rotate it while pulling upwards & it will roll out.

That's what I thought. I was halfway there today when I removed the Takeda intake. Oh well I can deal with all of that when I install my new intake this weekend.

Thanks Heavy.

Yup, Boosted was/is/remains the original CTE poster child, we all have to live vicariously through him, lol.

If anyone wants more info and long term input from experience, they should direct their inquiries to him.

As for me? My crystal ball allows me to...see...CTE cat back...cams...UR underdrive pulleys...and maybe K-Pro tuning in my future. Or...maybe I'll still do the blower and say to hell with it.

Looks like we see the future through the same crystal ball. Seems yours is a little clearer then mine though as I don't remember mentioning I was getting my intake (in Seattle...) LOL. Perhaps that info was leaked by someone. Haha.

I was going to get the Piaa HID bulbs but at $400 a set I figured the money would be better spent on the CTE cat back. I will let you all know how it sounds when I get back from my trip to (Seattle).

No I won't be getting it this weekend. Unless of course it's available...

How happy is your car?

I put the stock intake system back in the car yesterday and took it for a rip. Much quieter then with the Takeda. Is this more or less what the CTE Ice Box sounds like?

Thanks for the compliment on my car. I was polishing my RJs yesterday in prep for the road trip/meet and noticed a very small gouge in one of my wheels. You can't imagine the furry that tore through my soul...

I'm assuming that when running the 19s I can save some weight and remove the useless factory spare tire...

Ahh well ok, check out post #97 by Boosted.

Don't say I never did anything for you. LOL.

Post 97 has been there since Heavy posted his pics all you had to do was read with interest. Hahaha.

Good luck.

But that's going to be a big expense. I figure around $6500 after everything is said and done. If not more....CAD of course.

No problem. I've caught myself in the trap of excitement a few times and completely missed the obvious.

Have you removed your intake resonator yet? You will need to do that before you can install any kind of cold air intake or the Ice Box.
