So I finally got pictures of the CT-Engineering Ice Box. It is still in development so they may make a few changes. I think that it is their best looking one yet. I will let everyone know when they become available.

No idea on prices yet, the previous generation TL's ran about $300 but didn't have a carbon fiber lid, so...dunno.

The icebox intake from CT-E is a cold air intake that takes advantage of cool air outside the engine compartment without moving the air filter itself into the area behind the bumper where it's a PITA to clean. Also, by design, the icebox cannot ingest water like tube & filter CAI's (without a bypass valve) will.

(The icebox has an integrated water bypass valve, a tube & filter CAI can be retrofitted with one, but they are an additional cost. )

Also, the icebox doesn't effectively elongate the air intake tract because it's located where the stock intake resides, but is form following function, not the opposite & flows much more freely than the stock intake. In the past, the CTE intake tube extension and filter itself have had very well constructed velocity stacks as part of the design. That straightens the air's entry into the tube increasing, well, velocity.

Flow means nothing when velocity drops.

It surely looks pretty but I wonder if it’s going to be all that much different from the stock air intake. I imagine the surface area of the filter is bigger than O.E.M, which is good, but where is it drawing air from? Stock location? Also it looks like it uses the stock intake tubing with only an adapter that attaches both the MAF and filter/airbox to it. Anyways these are just observations made from a single picture.

Here is a link to an icebox made for the 94-01 Integra. It is a stock location box, but has a very large intake tract feeding the box.

The stock box is really restrictive because it is designed to cancel out the air intake noise, not desgned for max performance.

Apologies to Boosted09TSX if I'm stealing his thunder on his post, I'm just familiar with CTE from a design/implementation standpoint. Boosted's car is the one in the pic & he's definitely up to speed on development availability and pricing, etc.

 

It's not a problem. I wish that I had more info on it as well. The power figures are not as high as the Takata intake. I think that CT-E might purchase one to compare power figures with. Different Dyno's different figures.

As soon as I have a idea on price I will post it, anf the dyno sheet as soon as I get it.

 

ohhhh! alrighty! dayumm if i take out the resonator (which i havent done cause of laziness) and put in the icebox or the cold air intake, would it cancel each other out or like make it even louder?

 

...its as simple as this
cleaner box style intakes improve lower end torque while blower type intakes (like injen or aem style) improve higher end torque. and thats how it is for almost all cars.
cleaner box style have pros and cons depending on what you're looking for. but something that almost everyone can see as a pro, is not having to worry about getting it wet from the rain.

 

The sound is similar with a CAI tube style as it is for the cleaner box.

Just removing the resonator will make more noise, but noise doesn't equal power.

Tube style is harder to clean the filter and requires a bypass valve and two cuts of your tube to make room inline for the bypass vavlve.

Cleaner box filter is right up top to make cleaning easier and eliminates the need for a bypass valve, it's built in.

 

Yea, having a CAI is annoying to clean especially after the novelty wears off, the sound is nice, but having to jack up your car just to clean your filter, it gets annoying. Also, with mine, I didn't get the bypass valve, so I had to be extra careful driving through rain and here in good ol' florida, we gets tons of that lol

 

Any tips on how to improve HP without voiding Acura's warranty? Or do I just have to wait until the warranty is over to "play?" Like the Ice Box....is this a warranty killer?

 

you can't void the warranty unless that part (for example ice box) caused your car to not work. they can't just say you don't have a warranty because your driver's lock don't work while you have an intake. and most of the time, the service ppl are cool with it. or at least where i go to.

 

For detailed information regarding the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975, google it. Kowloon's post pretty much covers it, but it doesn't mean the dealer won't try to exempt it. That usually depends on the regional warranty service manager or GM of the dealership in your area.

Umm.. I got a question? You know the OEM piping for the intake and you guys see how it is connected to the CT Ice box? Well I was wondering, if you can short ram intake with the filter sitting at the same spot.. as well as put the box on top? Cause I'm not feeling the oem rubber/plastic feel of the intake.. Just a thought/ question.. OR maybe a CAI with a ice box if possible? If not, why not? I want to know and learn about this stuff cause I too am interested =) Thanks in advance!

 

If you look at their previous design icebox offerings;

they have made them like that in the past. However, (this is just a S.W.A.G.) if it doesn't make power to replace it, they don't bother. You *might* be able to run it as a short ram without the box, but you'll have much better gains with the box. The icebox is basically a short ram with an area to draw cool air from.

I'd prefer to *not* have a metal tube after the icebox anyway, on account of the heat transfer from the engine compartment through that tube to your "cool air" running through it.

Also CT-E has always tried to make their products look as factory as possible. The inside of the tube is smooth as metal anyways. In the past there hasn't been any performance benefits to a metal tube.

Noob question : So lets say they produced this icebox, it wouldn't be a good idea to have both a Takeda CAI and CT-E Icebox?

You could probably cut the short ram Takeda piece if you wanted a different looking tube to go from the icebox to the throttle body, but if the covoluted rubber tubing isn't restrictive or doesn't cause turbulence or reduced velocity, there's no reason to change it. The nature of the rubber insulates the cool air from the heat in the engine compartment.

 

If they re-vamp the 1G TSX Icebox to this carbon design I will purchase one immediately.

 

I wouldn't bet on it. The tool-up costs would probably be more than they'd ever make in sales for a car that's out of production.

You could have an autoclaved cf cap for the plastic icebox made, but that'd be some bucks too.
