Power steering hose recall
Power steering hose recall
My power steering is making that loud noise...I had my hose replaced under the recall a little while back. So my question, could this noise have anything to do with the dealership replacing my power steering hose?
The dealership should honor any warranty work or recall work that may need done. Perhaps they didn't do the job properly. It's a safety issue, so get back in to have it taken care of.
I had my car in and they told me the hose was replaced.. but ever since.. and typically only when it's cold.. the damn ps whirrs.. Ahhh!!!!
I'm going to take it back eventually but such a hassle.. seriously wtf.. I didn't verify if they flushed the ps fluid well but I would assume that is a given.. (lesson learned: never assume)
So again, we're in the same boat.. this issue isn't new.

So I took the car in this afternoon and the dealership claims that this could not be a result of recall work. The power steering pump is going to have to be replaced which they estimated to be around $600 for parts and labor!

...thats exactly what i didn't want to hear. i've got a p/s hose recall but i've been procrastinating yet to have a dealership look at it. absolutely zero problems w/ the car but reading past post on this issue i guess its in my best interest. 2006 NBP TL
its a 2004 and the car just hit 100k last week! I've owned a few cars and this is the first time I've dealt with this issue. Why shouldn't the power steering pump go bad? and what would cause it to go bad?
failure to change the fluid at 60 k miles or whatever your years owner book calls for it
Old fluid can eat seals or damage o-ring
Be glad its only the pump and not the whole steering rack
I would call the local auto parts recycler/junkyard and ask for a pump
100k miles--something is bound to wear out! Hows the transmission~
Be sure to do a full system/steering rack included, cleaning flush- before installing a new/used pump
others: dont wait on that p/s recall- its for a potential breakage at the hose fitting- loss of fluid onto hot exhaust- loss of power steering and possible underhood fire
Not likely- but possible none the less

What does the dealership check to see if the power steering hose was replaced? I looked at mine and it looks pretty new. I just got the car two weeks ago from an acura dealership.
Can you explain what the noise is and where it's coming from?
It sounds kinda like a high pitched vacuum and it seems to be coming from the right side of the engine bay close to the windshield. It only makes the noise when I first start the car and when I'm going slow/turning the wheel, but like I said it has not made the noise again since Tuesday.
If your p/s hose was replaced under warranty, the dealer was supposed to make a punch mark above the first few letters/number of your VIN against the firewall. It's kind of tough to see, but it's right behind the middle of our strut tower bar inside the engine bay.
When the dealer tech swapped out the hose they should have purged the fluid. It's likely cavitation is what caused the whirring noise and ends up hurting the p/s pump. The internals don't like chewing air. No way would I accept the idea that replacing a part related to the steering system didn't somehow upset the other pieces.
If you get no response on customer good will (>100k miles, good luck) find a used piece or look online for a suitable aftermarket one.

I had the same problem others are describing. I took my car in for service a couple of months ago and they did the power steering recall work. Then this week before I drove 500 miles for the holidays, the car starts making the loud power steering noise in the morning. This was the first time I heard the noise and it has happened every day since. Now I am 500 miles from home so I take it to the dealer in Louisville, KY. They looked at it and said the dealer in Richmond, VA likely did not replace the O ring but only the hose. They said I should go back to the Richmond dealer when I get home.
So has anyone been successful in going back to the dealer and get them to resolve this issue? It looks like the payment from Acura for the recall work is barely enough and the dealer is just trying to get it done quickly. It is probably going to be tough to get the dealer to admit they only did part of the recall. Any suggestions?

When they replaced the hose they probably didn't replace the O-ring. I had the same problem, and I bought the O-ring from Acura Dealership cost me 2 bucks then I simply replaced the O-ring took me and my cousin (who did most of the work) 5 minutes at most. I woke up this morning to a quiet pump, and it was 30 degrees. Supposedly the problem is that the old O-ring lets air in and bubbles form in the system and appear in your resevoir, turn ur car on and open the p/s reservoir if you have bubbles in there most likely its your o-ring. cost of repair 2 dollars and 5 min of your time.

Don't really feel like shelling out $300 for a power steering pump at the moment if the problem isn't the pump itself. Could you give a bit more detail as far as which o-ring you replaced?

Thanks!
mAC4rmthebACkoftheAC is right about the O-ring taking care of the noise, due to air being introduced into the system (assuming that is the specific noise that you are indeed hearing).
The O-ring he bought and replaced is part #13 on the diagram. It SHOULD have been replaced when the recall was done, as it comes with every recall kit. The old ones are black, the new ones are orange.
Bolt #18 is all that you have to remove to replace the O-ring. It's a 10mm.

Hi All,
This is the exact same problem that I have right now. Got the steering hose recall done and since then there was this clunking noise everytime the steering moved in either direction. Took the car back to another dealership since I had moved and they said the other dealer did not do the job correctly. The old dealership sent the hose to the current dealer and they replaced the hose.
Things got much better but still there was a noise sometimes. I got my car serviced for a B type at the same dealership and asked them to check the noise again. This time the dealer says that the steering pump has to be replaced and and the same old stuff.
I have started to notice that my car makes the same sound that of a vaccum specially in the mornings. The recall has bascially screwed up everything and so much time has already been waisted.
Has anyone found a way out from this situation. If so, please write your experience. I do not want to spend 675$ quoted by the dealer for the steering pump.
Advise from all is welcome.
Thanks in advance.

G/L!
Here is what I did. As suggested by a lot of people, I took my car back to the dealership and after a lot of talking got them into replacing the Power steering pump for which they further consulted the Acura Markeeting guy on the situation.
After getting the PS pump the car is perfectly fine with no noise.
Thanks everyone for all the good advise.
+1 on the PS pumps being shyt.
I've gone through 2 already and during the colder / winter seasons, it always acts up and always has a tiny-tiny-tiny small leak around that top part of the steering pump assembly. I'll have to check the o-ring to see if I'm upgraded to the orange.
Definitely get the PS hose recall done. I had mine leak prior to the whole recall ordeal and had to do a last minute MacGyver high-temp tape job to last long enough to get my car to the service shop. You definitely do not want power steering fluid to leak on a hot engine.
Also, if I remember from my Helms manual with regards to air getting into the system, if you turn your steering wheel from lock-to-lock positions, I believe there's an air release valve that's supposed to engage to rid your system of that cavitation.

I have a 2008 TL. I purchased it used about a month ago and the dealer told me that there are no recalls on the car??? Was the power steering hose problem fix or was the dealership not sharing all information.
You're mistaken.

The recall encompasses 04-08 model years: see towards the middle of the page for TSB 08-016 on the power steering recall: https://acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=553557; or check the TSB thread for the actual TSB.
My 2008 TL VIN Not in recall?
I have a 2008 TL with 53k miles with the exact same power steering hose leak issue. Read the recall bulletin, and took it back to the dealership. They told me that my 2008 TL VIN# wasn’t on the recall list, and it will cost $450 to have it fixed
They said the design was changed and a heat shield was added to the hose. My VIN# wasn’t included because I had the mod. I told them that mine didn’t have a heat shield on it. So they got my old one out of the trash which didn’t have the shield, and looked at the new installed one which has one. So they said they will call Acura corp to see if they would cover it. Haven’t paid anything yet. Have to wait and see what happens next.
