What exactly does "S" mode on the transmission do?

What exactly does the s mode do?
I put it in S mode by mistake and It shifted its own?
I thought that u would have to shift yourself in "S" mode but it still shifts for you, so whats the point?
Do any of you guys use the "S" mode?
And can anyone tell me the advantages of "S" mode?
Like if i was at the track running 1/4 mile would I have a quicker time in "S" mode or would it be the same, or does it just hold gears longer in normal driving?

To what I could tell with the loaner I have right now, it holds the gears longer and allows you to stay in the mode where you can use the paddles.

It will still shift on it's own eventually to keep you/somebody from damaging the transmission in case it was put into 'S' instead of 'D' by mistake.

But as stated above, it hold the gear for a little longer and is intended for paddle shifting.

I don't use it, but I'm sure others do.

If it adds to your overall enjoyment of driving by using the paddle shifters, then the loss in gas mileage becomes less of a concern.

From the Owners manual:

S Position (S) - To shift into the S position, press the release button on the front of the shift lever, and move the lever to S. This position is similar to D, except only gears from first to fourth are selected. The S position keeps the transmission from cycling between fourth and fifth gears in stop-and-go driving.

Refer page 375 and 379 of the Owners manual.

If you shift to S, and press the paddle to gear 1, it will not auto shift... I used this once and forgot that I was on S mode, I almost reach the cut off point on 1st gear (while talking to my wife on the handsfree) and it didnt change gear :p

If you shift to S and didnt press the paddle, it still works like D but hold the gear on a position longer.

You are right what I noted in my earlier message was if you put it in S mode and do not use the paddle shifters. If you use the paddle shifters then per the owners manual:

With the shift lever in the S position, you can manually shift up or down with the paddle shifters. The transmission goes into the sequential shift mode and holds the selected gear.

When you accelerate from a stop, the transmission starts in first gear, and you must manually upshift between first and fifth gears.Make sure you upshift before the engine speed reaches the tachometer’s red zone.

Same thing happened to me while talking to a friend. Will it not auto shift to 2nd? I'm too scared to try.

Like I stated in my earlier post the Owners manual says it will shift automatically in S mode as long as you don't use the paddle shifters but you will be limited to the first four gears.

I haven't tried this since my car is barely out of the break-in period

My mistake for not consulting the manual; I think I am less confused now after re-reading the posts. My mistake.

Putting the lever into "S" doesn't automatically give full control to the paddles. To operate the car completely with the paddles, click either the downshift or upshift paddle while in "S"...doing this will make the "M 1, M 2, M 3" etc appear on the screen on the gauge cluster, letting you know that you've put the car in the exclusive manual mode.

Yup, basically if there is no gear number showing on your gauge, then it will shift automatically. Otherwise it wont...

I apologize. I quoted the wrong message. No harm intended.

Can someone clarify whether it is possible to switch from "D" to "S" mode while the car is moving. I read the manual and it says that the you have to press the shift release lever to shift from "D" to "S" mode which make me think that the car would have to be stationary.

In my old RSX I was able to switch from automatic to manumatic (change up manually) mode on the fly so i am curious whether it is the same on the TSX as well.

You can shift from D to S while the car is in motion, the transmission will downshift to 3rd or 4th gear. You'll experience some engine braking if you're traveling pretty fast.

If you are in the S mode and using paddle shifters you can hold a particular gear as long as you want. So it is kinda like driving a manual as in you can rev the engine as much as you want and for me personally more fun. Ofcourse the mileage would suffer so I don't use S mode all the time but sometimes when I am in the mood for some spirited driving.

You can, but no point in doing this. You can still gear down with your paddle shift on D mode (e.g. want to pass that bloody turtle in front of you :p)

This is true, but if you want to transmission to stay in 3rd gear (for example) as you go through a hairpin turn, putting it in "S" is the only way to be sure you won't have an up shift mid-corner which could upset the F/R balance.
