Service?

I have been researching different cars to be my next vehicle, and the tsx is at the top of my list. But one question I have is in regards to service. The nearest Acura dealer is 25 miles away-not real convenient....but there is a very good Honda dealer about a mile from my house....does anyone know if Honda dealerships would service(warranty, maintenance, repair) Acuras?

wow.

25 miles away is not convenient huh?

aren't you spoiled.

and no, honda will not do warranty work or whatever
on your acura, at least in this part of the country.
I doubt they would do it anywhere else either.

you only go for service a couple times a year anyway...
or just do your own oil changes.

Acura gives loaner cars you know...
it's not like you'd be stuck there or anything.

One of the selling points on the TSX for me was no scheduled service appointments!!

The car will tell you when its time to change the oil or if there is a need for servicing. Which, means no annoying required 5k, 10k, 15, 30k service visits!

Correct, I believe the manual states recommended change intervals for trans and brake fluid.

Here is some recommended maintenance minders that I took from the manual:

15k -- Air cleaner, Dust/Pollen Filter (if in urban, city area)
60k -- Tranny fluid

The manual also recommends Honda Motor Oil 5w-20 and mentions that you can use synthetic, but to make sure it has the API Certification Seal.

Anyone know how much how much an Acura dealer charges for an oil change?

Honda cannot do warranty work as mentioned. Obviously, since everything else it "customer pay" you can patronize any garage you want. A Honda dealer close to you would be a good choice if you feel the Acura dealer is too far.

Tranny fluid is in the maintenance minder system and prompted brake inspections are too.

The maintenance minder specifies two levels of service, an oil change or an oil change with filter and a lot of items to be inspected.

In addition, other items may be listed which include:
  • Rotate tires
  • Replace air cleaner element
  • Replace dust and pollen filter
  • Inspect drive belt
  • Replace transmission fluid
  • Replace spark plugs
  • Inspect valve clearance
  • Replace engine coolant

My question is, do they really recommend an oil change without changing the oil filter? Does anybody actually do this?

My dealer is telling me to alternate between the oilchange A service and the B service every 3750 miles on my 2009 TSX. No I do not think that is correct but I would like to clarify that if you do the oil change and reset the service reminder does it really come up and tell you when the B service is required, Brake Fluid, coolant plus various checks etc? I have been changing my oil at 50% which for me is 5-6 months on my wife's 2006 TSX and have never seen a reminder yet. The same dealership keeps telling my wife that she needs needs a 20k service on her car (presently at 18k)

I guess my question is can you leave it all to the service reminder or not?

I don't understand what the confusion is here. There are two resources that tell you what maintenance the car needs and when: the electronic maintenance minder in the car and the written maintenance manual. Just do what they tell you. The electronic maintenance minder will tell you to perform services at times that vary depending on each individual car's useage. What it says about he frequency of oil changes is simple: have them done when it tells you to, but be sure to do it at least once a year even if you don't get a reminder in that time.

As for CaptPJB's dealer telling him to get oil changes every 3750 miles, I don't know what that's about. I know of no auto manufacturer that requires oil changes that often for modern vehicles. My old Ford Probe GT only needed oil changes every 7,500 miles as per Ford. I think I've heard of some BMWs not needing them for 10,000-15,000 miles! I suspect that dealer is suggesting that rediculously short interval for the same reason that Jiffy Lube does: to make money off of unnecessary service.

Weeeelllll if you followed the older schedules, the manual might have stated 7500 in normal usage, but if you fell under the severe conditions, you need to half that, thus the 3750. However, you are correct, the current cars should not have a fixed schedule, the car will determine the correct interval for you and it could be more or less frequent than the old method.

A is just the oil, and B is oil and filter, I think (or maybe B is filter only). The manual describes this.

The maintenance minder is supposed to tell us when A or B is required. I admit I'm having a little trouble putting that much faith in the minder, but I can always do maintenance whenever I want anyways.

I can not get a firm answer on this either. I always wait until it hits 15% on my sister's 08 Accord because that's when the MM codes pop up. I think you need to wait until the 15% before actually resetting the MM. Unless someone else can clarify that they come on at any other time.

And no matter what Honda is telling you I will never believe that on your first oil change you do not need to change your oil filter. I can't wait down the road to see how much damage this will cause when a filter will be in a car for between 12-15k miles without a change.

Thanks for the info on 15% at least that explains why I never get a code. So if you change early it appears you need to keep a track of things yourself.
I notice a lot of what the dealer suggests is "fluff" check this check that etc I think next time in I will just make a list of what I want checked and changed.

Since our 06 has never shown a code in 17k miles it would seem you are right pity there is no way to access the codes to see what should be up next.

I am assuming our new 09 system works the same too, no big deal to keep track but I am not going to go for the dealer suggested 3750 oil change then a designated service at the next 3750 of between $100-200 either. Looks like a variation on the A service B service alternating

It would be nice if Acura would publish a real service schedule the book in the 09 is vague on the subject I think I may just follow the routine in the 06 book as it had more information

So far I change the oil twice in her car and there was a A1 and B1 code. Im guessing the B12 is next since it requires the air filter replacements. A lot of the checks that they do is money flushed away at such an early age in the cars life. There is no need to be checking for balljoints, tie rod ends, etc up until 70k-80k miles at the earliest. Sure there is a possibility that there could be something faulty but that is about a .05% chance of happening.

If you want to save yourself some money, get the manual out and see what the B1 indicator looks for. Turn your steering wheel to all of the way to the left or right, most of the things you can check for yourself.
