Just found a non-led upgrade for our car. For those who are interested.

The stock DRL/hi are 9005 sylvania halogen bulbs

There are lots of upgrades for DRL. Just pop in any 9005 that is the same wattage.

 

Yea. I know. However, the problem is that some kits don't function properly such as:

-LED high beams are on with regular lights (and they should turn off)
-"Check DRL system" error message shows
-LED do not illuminate as well as the stock bulbs
-Harness/relay kit does not function properly

Are there any "non-error" alternatives that are worth the cost?

 

You can do what I do and remove the DRL fuse.

 

Will the hi beam still function properly?? If so then you're a freaking genius lol!!! I will do that ASAP!!

 

yes, the high beam still works, there is a whole thread on pulling the DRL fuse.

before CEB posts, make sure you understand the warranty issues, illegalities, and the fact that pulling the DRL fuse is a safety hazard and your insurance bases your price on safety features, if you deactivate one it may be frowned upon, all that fun stuff. educate yourself, then mod your whip as you see fit.

 

I actually did a lot of research into the silver stars and the reviews were mostly negative... Many complaints of those bulbs burning out much much sooner than normal bulbs.... I was definitely interested in what they would look like though

 

So what is the upgrade characteristic? Normally people use LED cause they want a white color DRL, these will still likely look yellow as DRL...as far as brighter high beams, never really had to use mine

See the bold above. I'm interested to see if it is "truly" whiter light than the stock bulbs. It claims to be.

 

Haha nice disclaimer after looking up some threads, I'm not so sure I want an annoying drl light on my dash. And I don't think I'd get around to adding a resistor to cancel the warning light also. So I guess I'll live with drl's

 

Silverstars do burn out notoriously quick (went through ~2 sets each year on my Saab 9-3), but that was just using them as the low beam.

Although the DRLs would have less wattage going to them then normal low beams, the fact that they are on much more often probably means they will still burn out pretty quick. And the lights on the TSX aren't exactly the easiest to get to...

 

The DRL "fuse delete" was the first (and so far only) mod I did to my '13. It might be vain, but I can't stand the look of the dimmed incandescent bulbs... it looks like the car has an electrical problem. DRLs are really a solution to a problem that never should've existed in the first place. :P

 

I can't decide which to go with, pulling the fuse or the LED kit or this.... Can't stand the ugly yellow lights anymore.... I always turn on my low beams to get rid of the hideous look lol

 

The thing about DRL on my car is that...... I never have to see them when I drive. Modding them out of vanity is like modding your car because you read about it on the internet.

I have been looking for a halogen high beam bulb upgrade for my 2010 Acura MDX. The wattage shown in the specs is 60 watts for the bulb. The service manager said that people are burning out their wiring harnesses when they exceed this. He said that Acura says the max wattage for the head light bulbs is 60. When I look at the sylvan is bulbs suggested in this forum they show 65 watts. Can anyone provide any input. I don't want to burn out my harness. Thank You

Just a quick update, as I see this thread is a couple years old. PIAA has better, brighter, longer lasting bulbs. They cost a little more, but you wont be burning through two sets a year either!

Eh, Silverstar's aren't *terrible* in my opinion. I had one pair that I used in a 5x7 H4 retrofit lens kit (ha, I'm old). I used them for 3 years, sold the car but transferred the bulbs to my new ride. Ran them there for another 7 years until one finally burned out. I swapped the burned one for a random replacement I had laying around and sold the truck with that ghetto mismatched headlights 1 year later. So, 10 and 11 years is pretty good longevity in my book.

I used to run them in all my vehicles back in the day because they were the best option at Pepboys.

I'm fond of the Osram Nightbreakers for non-HID, non-LED applications now. I think they're a good trade off of color, cost, output, and life. I'm pretty sure that's what I've got for the DRL/Highs on the TSX right now until I install some LEDs.

Thread revival ..

Anyone try/heard of HIR bulbs? Suppose to be middle ground between halogens and HID's w/o the glare of HID's in reflector type headlights. Seem to be a good hit on another forum I frequent.

9005's are 9011 HIR's
9006's are 9012 HIR's

Supposedly all you need to do is trim the mounting tabs a bit to make them fit .. but I do wonder how they'll look running at lower wattage as DRL's.

Might grab a set for wife's car. I feel blind driving my car then driving her car. Spoiled with proper HID's and projectors.

That's what I was reading on my offroad forum as well.

Not a lot of impressed people, except for the "I'm going to justify my purchase no matter what" crew. They swear it makes a difference, but too many people give it the ol' "meh" shrug.

So as some have advised me, going with an LED conversion is not the best option for the halogens with light being scattered everywhere. For the sake of not pissing off other drivers, I want to go with the best and whitest 9005 bulb possible to get rid of that horrible dim look.

I've done a lot of research, but just wanted to see if anyone has gone this route instead of LED's. I plan on doing an LED mod similar to username 0 next to the fogs OR getting LED fogs that have an LED bar within the light when fogs are NOT activated via OEM switch, and when the OEM switch goes on, the LED bars go off and the LED fog light. I could also just get a whiter fog bulb too if anyone has done this as well.

Hir =Tractor light ...lol. Bought mine at a JhonDeer supplier ...

I use LED,s, and they are fine. More people were more upset over the HIDs—I only use them in my driving lights or fogsnow. I found excellent LED lights in Amazon for both hi and lo beams.

They are much better than the stock bulbs, even the PIAA upgrades

Which LED's for the lows are you referring to? I'm very satisfied with the OEM HID's - High beams serve their purpose but there could be room to grow.

Those DRL are $33! Thats a lot for DRL - They dont serve as a guiding light imo.
