Weird Steering Wheel Audio Controls Problem

When I got my TL the audio controls worked perfectly. Then after about 3 weeks I felt like I had to press the "AUDIO" harder for it to work. Then today I noticed that my Volume and Audio buttons on my steering wheel completely don't work. So I thought maybe a fuse? Then I tried my Cruise control buttons and they worked perfectly. So I thought maybe audio has own fuse? BUT THIS IS THE WEIRD PART. When I turn my steering wheel in either direction about 180 degrees, the volume and audio button works perfectly. I don't even have to press them down hard. But once I turn the steering wheel back to straighten the car out, the buttons don't work again. I have to turn the steering wheel left about 270 degrees or right 180 degrees from straight for the audio controls on my steering wheel to work. And my radio works perfectly if I reach all the way up there to change the station or volume. YES, I am that lazy.

Sounds like something is messed up in the steering column. There is no fuse for the steering wheel controls. Its a direct wire to the radio.

There is a fix for this I believe. If you search you might find it or wait till someone chimes in.

Interesting - My '03 ASpec does the same thing. The top button can change the channel if pressed lightly. I found if I push it in all the way, release it all the way and repeat, I can avoid this problem. there are two phillips screws on the side of the control cluster "pod" - I may take them off and look at the contacts. I feel the "problem" is to do with the the angle / how the button is pushed ex: pushing it from the top or wiggling it.

Of course I tried searching and couldn't find anything.

And that link brings me to a blank page.

Also sometimes when I am driving at high speeds the audio controls work fine. And I noticed that when I press the down volume button, the volume goes up and then down which made me think that nothing was pressed but my up just didn't work. I have no idea how to explain this because sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't, if I drive this fast it works, if i turn this much it works, on a cold start it works, and much more.

Is there a easy way to open it up and take a look at it? Thanks.

Oh it works now. It didn't work for some reason yesterday. Thanks. This looks like a crazy job. I'm a beginner but thanks for finding the fix. Guess its an Acura problem.

I have to add... On mine, if you push the button like you mean it, without hesitation, it works... (cars got its own taste in music)... It also helps to push the top half of the button...

I have the newest version of Adobe reader and I cannot open the link. I get this message:

Help please? I already have my steering column ripped apart, I just need to know what to do (bought a replacement audio switch and searched on here for how to get the back of the steering wheel off, only to find this post).

Are those buttons supposed to light up on the wheel? I thought mine used to but don't anymore - or maybe I am imagining things

yeah this is actually a pretty common problem guys..... i got a notification from the dealer about having it fixed.... think it involves pulling the steering wheel and tapping small indentions in the contact rings that connect the buttons on the steering wheel to the rest of the harness in the column.... it's there so you don't have wires binding up when you turn the wheel.... too much trouble to be worth it for me... mine only does this occasionally....

My volume up button changes the radio station on my 03 CLS6. But it only seems to do that when it's cold. After the car warms up, it's fine. I'm not even gonna bother with trying to fix it cause I'm replacing the factory stereo anyway.

I have the same problem with my 03 TL. Audio and volume buttons doesn't work in most cases. Volume button sometimes changes volume and sometimes changes the radio station! also, down key sometimes increases volume!
My cruise button on wheel sometimes doesn't work (main green light is on).
Anybody can help pleasssse?? I couldn't download that PDF because of the same error with others.

I pulled the control off the wheel and opened it. Blasted it with a good contact cleaner. It's a bit picky to work with but was much improved when I finally got it reinstalled. It has worked much better since then, but still some random failures here and there.

One of life's irritants.......
