YES!!!! I am awarded top honors at Acura. I get to take time out of my scheduele so I can drop off my car and have them 'look' at my Tranny which has been slipping 5 times in last 4 days.

Update that list!

Thanks man.

11.9K miles Bought it last June.

I noticed my car started slipping a few weeks ago, but very rarely. Here and there and usually only at around 35-50 mph
Then in the last week, it got progressively worse...slipping 3 or 4 times a day. Last night I had a really bad one going home.
And this morning it was doing it, and when I got to my parking garage, it would almost redline before it would shift. And I think it stunk?? I had to take it back down to the bottom of the garage, to be towed, and it sounded like it was almost grinding as I drove, and it kept slipping.

So, now it's at the dealer to have it replaced - and they never even questioned me about it. They said, "bring it in, that they would be ordering a new one today", and had me a rental car as soon a I got there.

My 2nd tranny made that grinding noise when it finally went. Pretty awful noise, wasn't it? Interestingly, my first one didn't make that noise when it failed.

Post you VIN so oblio98 can add you to the list.

Same as me. The service guys are not even phased! You would think that they would at least act suprised....

Sorry to hear you are joining the club. Let me know your VIN and you are on the list, which no, by the way, is up to

Hey RedLined,

Did you get Acura to extend your warrantee? Aren't you at 40k miles now? With 10k miles left, you aren't a little worried? I have 26k miles on mine, and when it hits 50k, I think I'll be looking to trade it in.

I haven't inquired yet. When I last had my tranny replaced at about 26000 miles, the service rep said the tranny would be covered for another 50,000 miles. So I felt ok. Since then, others on this board have indicated that is not the case, that once I hit 50000 miles, that's it! I'm going to call Acura Cust. Serv. to find out. If I'm not covered beyond 50k, I'll ask them to extend it by being politely *****y. If they don't, I'll probably purchase an extended warranty out to 100,000 for the peace of mind and to make it easier to sell if I unload it before 100,000.

Redlined,

When I specifically asked the Service guy and the Acura Rep for a full 50k warranty on the new tranny...no dice...the warranty was only good until odometer hit 50k...fortunately, the new tranny went out within the next 400 miles...so, I was covered again.

Acura gave me the best compensation I could have gotten though...they bought the car back.

tranny getting ready to go

THIS CAR SUCKS!!! I HAVE 11K ON IT AND THE ITS STARTING TO SLIP AND KINDA STUDDER. I WANT IT TO GO KNOW BECAUSE I AM GONNA RAISE HELL WHEN I GOT TO THE DEALER. When this problem is fixed this car is history. I'll be getting a BMW or something but this car stinks and I don't want it any more. I just got a WDP OEM body kit ( ordered but don't have yet ) and this happens. Now I gots to sell it because I can't cancell the order.

Yep, that noise was horrific to say the least!!

I'm still pissed about the whole thing, plus the fact I got a POS 626 rental car!!

If your car isn't that old, say a couple of months with really low mileage, maybe you can get more.

Some have had luck getting the dealer to buy the car back. If you're really unhappy with the car and they can give you something reasonable for it, consider that. But I suspect if you're like most of us, you love your TLS and really don't want to get rid of it or get any other car.

Good luck
Does anyone happen to have the cutomer care # offhand? I'd like to call them this morning and b#tch and moan about this tranny and the POS rental they gave me.

We're up to 37, and it looks like the theory of it being the "early cars" is about shot. From the VINs reported, they are pretty much spread out across the number range.

For what it's worth, my replacement tranny has been fine, and the car is now running (at 33000 miles) better than it ever has. Hopefully, this is a one time shot...

TLS VIN List

Oblio,

It would be real interesting to see a list of VINs for all the TL-S cars made in 02, and see how your list of failed tranny VINs maps to that. We could get a better perspective on how sporadic the failures are. I assume that since the VINs range all the way up to 40k+, it has to include all TLs.

I wonder if we could get that TLS VIN list...?

BTW, I was just at the Pohanka Acura dealership in Chantilly, VA, and the service advisor I spoke to said he had never heard of a TLS tranny problem, and that he had not seen any come in for repair. This is interesting in that the TL is pretty hot here in the DC metro area, so I would think that he should have seen a few by now. I wonder if he speak with forked tongue?

I'm gonna check my VIN, but for you guys whe know your VIN is less than 50000 I'd beat the sh!t outta the tranny and get a new one under warranty. It would be major costly to be paid for. Good luck to all. Hopefully this problem has been fixed past the 50000 VIN's.

My dealer had originally given me a 3 week estimated time for repairs on my tranny. Believe it or not, he called me 1 week after I dropped it off and said the car was ready to go!

Thankfully, I spent my week out of my S driving a 2002 Maxima SE from the local Enterprise Rental place. I talked my service guy up from a compact. It was fun to drive, but it seemed pretty unrefined to me - especially since it had only 6,000 miles on it.

I hope this tranny lasts forever, but I swear I'm already feeling some hesitation in shifting, and the shifts seem to be harder just like they were right before the gears started slipping. Only time will tell, but I don't feel great about the car right now. If it fails again, it's gone.

Model??

Are the tranny failures all Type-S or are there TL-Ps too??

A breakdown in percentages would be helpful also.

Thanks,

Hey Jon,

As you know, I got rid of my TL-S, and I had a friend check Carfax last week to see if the tranny replacements showed up, and they did not. In fact, I could not find a category under Carfax where it would be listed.

Knock on wood....

My '02 TL-s just turned one year old, 28K miles. Tranny is
not dead, btu certainly acts like it wants to die...
Mentioned to dealer, they can't do anything until it goes.
(you know,..hesitating shifts, slipping, etc..)
Still waiting, hopefully it won't go, I guess ?...

Garylee55,

I just wanted to thank you for some of your informational posts as well as Jon for keeping tabs on this tranny issue. While I hope that it never happens to me but its good to know that there is some good info on the symptoms and process. Hope the G35 is treating you well (and for those that stuck to the TLS I hope that the new tranny is treating you well also)!

Wow. As a new member gleaning some info about the TL-S, I sure am glad I found this site and thread. I was very seriously considering purchasing a 2003 TL-S, but am pulling out until Acura clears this mess up. Looks like I'll be checking out the G35...

Thanks to all for the info, and the affected parties have my sincere condolences. I have a '99 Miata that has it's version of your tranny problem (except that when the Miata fails, it's time for a new engine...). I won't let myself get into a similar situation.

Just keep in mind many of us bought our cars when it just came out prior to any problems being posted. I wouldn't jump on the G35 bandwagon until a year passes to see if anything serious pops up for it. Just have to repeat the mantra, never buy the first year model..wait a while a see how it holds up.

The G is not a first year model...it is the Nissan Skyline in Japan. It's the first year being sold in the US.

I would understand that if the TL-S was a first year model, but others with '03's are reporting the tranny problem as well. This is really quite a disappointment, as I really had my heart set on a TL-S. To get the G35 with the options I would have had on the TL-S would cost me about 2-3+ grand more, and that blows.

Hey Garylee55,

I went to the website and built me a G35. It came to $39K. I pretty much added everything. (Nav, Spoiler, Aerokit, Cold weather, HIDs, etc.)

What configuration did you get?

Hey Jon,

I got Premium Package, Xenons, Wood trim, sunroof and trunk mat. It ended up at the same price as my TL-S with Navi, but then I got 2K off of sticker...I opted to not get Navi...I never used it in TL. I got Black Obsidian on Graphite. Go to http://www.g35driver.com. My pics are posted under Atlthinker.

You must have also added Sport Package...I opted out because I wanted an all season tire and the sport package has a sport tire. Believe me, the difference in the handling is negligible! I alos don't like the spoiler on it...I don't like spoilers in general anyway, and especailly didn't like the way it looks on the G.
